Cockroaches are the most common household pests. They appear in apartments both in winter and in summer, and their appetite can only be envied. Humanity has been fighting such parasites for hundreds of years, and during this time many different means have been invented. Good efficiency was shown not only by chemical preparations, but also by folk methods, including exposure to odors.

Can you scare off cockroaches with smells?

Cockroaches can exist in different conditions, but not all of them are comfortable for the insect. If this is skillfully used, then you can get rid of pests. Smell is the most developed sense in parasites, which is why they find food so quickly. Cockroaches are very sensitive to different odors, and if the insect does not like the smell, it will not come close to its source.

Thus, if you saturate the place of residence of pests with certain smells, then they will soon leave there. It is only important to understand that smells alone are unlikely to be enough.

It would be more correct to use additional means: traps, aerosols, special fumigators. Then the result will not be long in coming.

Herbs

Using herbs is the easiest and safest way to get rid of household pests. As a rule, plants with a pungent smell should be chosen. Here are some good solutions.

Sagebrush

This is one of the most hated plants for cockroaches, therefore, many apartment owners often choose it. If there are few cockroaches or you want to prevent their appearance, you can limit yourself to dry grass. For example, experts recommend making brooms or sachets out of it, additionally soaking it with a couple of drops of this plant's essential oil. Dry formulations need to be changed every couple of months.

To process the premises, use a decoction or infusion of wormwood. Making a decoction is simple: 5 tablespoons of dry grass are poured into a liter of water, the liquid is brought to a boil, then cooled and infused for about 180 minutes. When this time has passed, the broth is filtered, collected in a spray bottle and sprayed with it all the places where insects reside.

Wormwood infusion is sold in pharmacies, and you can also make it yourself. A bottle of any capacity is filled with dry raw materials, then filled with alcohol and left for 21 days. Before use, the concentrate is diluted: 5 tablespoons of tincture are needed for 5 liters of room temperature water.

Bay leaf

This well-known seasoning contains essential oils that are extremely unpleasant for cockroaches. There are several ways you can use the plant.

  • Purchase a few bags of bay leaves or dry them yourself (the second option is preferable). The foliage should not fall apart. Whole specimens are laid out where cockroaches appear most often. It is important to put the leaves under the refrigerator, behind the baseboards, hide them in cabinets and under the sink. Lavrushka is changed every few days.
  • The second option is fumigation of the room... Take a freshly dried laurel branch and light one end of it, and then almost extinguish it so that the branch does not burn, but smolders. The smoke emanating during smoldering will drive away cockroaches. Walk around the room with laurel, fumigating your favorite cockroach spots. It is important that all windows and vents are tightly closed.After fumigation, extinguish the branch and leave the apartment for a couple of hours. After returning it will have to be aired. Fumigations are carried out every day for 2 weeks.

The method is time consuming, but the reviews about it are very good.

Tansy

This is another plant with a strong aroma and essential oils in its composition. For it to work, it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive processing of the room.

  • Flowers, dry or fresh, are collected in bouquets, and then placed where cockroaches have been seen. It is very important to place the flowers near sources of water and food. They also put tansy in kitchen cabinets and drawers.
  • To prepare the broth, one glass of flowers is poured into a five-liter saucepan, brought to a boil and boiled for 60 seconds. Then let the product cool down. The treatment is carried out with a kitchen sponge or spray. Sensing an unpleasant odor, insects will climb out, and at this moment they can be quickly destroyed with chemical sprays.
  • Alcohol tincture is especially effective against the young generation of cockroaches. It quickly penetrates under the not yet strengthened shell, instantly killing the insect. In one hundred milliliters of alcohol, 25 grams of tansy flowers are stirred, then the mixture costs 10 days.

They use it in the same way as a decoction - from a spray bottle.

Ledum

The evergreen wild rosemary, which grows in swamps, also contains essential oils that are unpleasant to cockroaches. Tincture or decoction of wild rosemary is extremely rare, they mainly use fresh or dry bunches of plants, laying them out in the habitats of pests. They also fumigate the premises with wild rosemary. The principle of operation is the same as with a bay leaf: a recently dried twig is set on fire, forcing it to smolder, and then the room is filled with smoke.

Honeysuckle

If you live in a private house, and there is honeysuckle on the site, then its leaves can be successfully used to remove cockroaches. The pungent smell will cause pests to get out of the house. Honeysuckle is used fresh and dried, spreading the leaves around the room and changing them regularly. You can also pour boiling water over the foliage and let it brew for several hours. The resulting broth is sprayed on the places where parasites are dominated.

In addition to the herbs already described, cockroaches do not like:

  • chamomile (sachets are made from dried flowers and placed in kitchen furniture);
  • mint (branches and foliage in any form are laid out around the room, you can also prepare decoctions).

Aroma oils

Aromatic oils have a pronounced pleasant aroma, and most people like to inhale it, which cannot be said about cockroaches. In fact, a variety of home oils can be used against these insects, but the following varieties will give the most powerful effect.

  • Tea tree... This oil must be used with care as it is poisonous to pets. If you have a pet in the house, it is best to turn on the aroma lamp with this oil. In other cases, a few drops are diluted in a bucket of water, and then the floor and other surfaces are washed.
  • Fir... The fresh pine scent is an excellent solution for aromatizing your home and getting rid of cockroaches. Half a liter of water is diluted with 50 grams of alcohol, and then the mixture is supplemented with 30 drops of fir oil. The resulting composition is used to process housing. Not recommended for use in rooms where there are babies and ladies in position.
  • Geranium... It is best to take pink geranium: its scent is the strongest. Geranium flowers are poured with a small amount of alcohol and insisted for about 14 days. Then it is diluted with water and the room is sprayed. You can buy ready-made oil from a pharmacy or specialty store.

Also, cockroaches will react quite quickly to the following types of oils:

  • citrus;
  • mint;
  • cedar;
  • lavender;
  • eucalyptus;
  • aniseed.

When using oils, it is important to remember that too long exposure can cause feelings of weakness and headaches... Many oils are harmful to pets and often cause allergic reactions in humans.

Be careful when choosing this or that product.

Chemicals

Chemicals include professional insecticides designed specifically to control cockroaches. Insects are very afraid of their smells. Most effective in repelling cockroaches aerosols... Complex treatments can be carried out with sprays, after which it is strongly recommended to leave the home for several hours. Also, with the help of aerosols, you can destroy random cockroaches running in the field of view.

The insects really do not like the smell of special crayons. They rub kitchen surfaces with such crayons, and cockroaches do not tolerate the outgoing smell. However, it is important to remember that crayons will not work if there are too many pests.

In addition to insecticides, chemicals are considered gasoline, kerosene, turpentine. There are tips on the Internet on how to remove cockroaches with the help of such products. Indeed, after such treatment, insects will disappear once and for all, since they do not tolerate such pungent odors. But you are unlikely to be able to live in such a room later. The fumes will not disappear for years, they are hazardous to health and can easily catch fire.

It is strongly discouraged to use them indoors where people live.

What other smells do cockroaches dislike?

In addition to the smells already described, cockroaches cannot stand a number of other scents. Let's consider them.

  • Vinegar... The pungent and pungent odor is extremely harmful to domestic parasites. To get rid of insects, you need to mix 200 milliliters of water with half the amount of vinegar 9%. For greater effectiveness, the composition can be supplemented with 20 drops of eucalyptus oil (any coniferous oil is also suitable). The mixture is shaken and then sprayed from a spray bottle.
  • Ammonia... This remedy will only help if the cockroaches have not yet bred. A tablespoon of alcohol is poured into a bucket of water, which is then used to wash floors and kitchen surfaces. If cockroaches appear in the house often, then ammonia can be used every time the room is cleaned.
  • Naphthalene... This substance is diluted with water and poured into several containers. Then the containers are placed in a room where there are cockroaches. It is important that in the apartment treated in this way there are no kids or pets who can drink water with a toxic substance.
  • Citrus... Cockroaches are very scared by the aroma of lemon, orange, grapefruit. After collecting the peel from such fruits, it can be spread while still fresh in places where insects appear most often.

In the event that you can leave the premises for a long time (for example, there is another home or are going on vacation), you can treat the apartment with chlorine. A rag is soaked in any chlorine-containing liquid, then the floor is washed with it. Remember that work of this kind should be carried out in protective clothing, goggles and a respirator. A day after processing, you need to clean the apartment well. The chlorine smell will last for a while, so it is best to leave the window open.

Tip: cockroaches can live a long time without food, but they cannot stand the lack of water. Water not only prolongs their life, but also neutralizes the poison that has entered the insect's body. That is why all water sources must be shut off. Wipe down the sink and faucet after each use, and dry the dishes. Even small droplets must not remain. And if you leave for a week and leave the apartment without water, but with odors unpleasant for insects, you will return to a renewed, cockroach-free dwelling.
