Often in construction, it becomes necessary to process various materials with a drill. Such a tool allows you to create the desired indentations in them, and then process these holes. Various types of drills may be required to carry out such work. Today we will talk about long drills and their main features.

Description

Long drills offer increased strength and reliability. They are used to create long, precise and even grooves. Most often, such holes are made in metal structures, shafts.

Long models are suitable for making both blind holes and through holes. These samples allow you to work with almost all types of metal, including cast iron, and with various alloys. As a rule, these tools are made from high quality high speed steel.

When deep drilling with such tools, the necessary equipment should be prepared in advance, while observing the speed of movement and feed of the tool.

All the necessary requirements for the quality and design of such drills can be found in GOST 2092-77.

Species overview

Extended drills can be of various types. Among them, it is necessary to highlight the following varieties, depending on the shape of the shank.

  • Cylindrical shank models. The end of such samples looks like a thin metal cylinder of short length. Drills with these shanks are commonly used for drills with a three-jaw chuck. These varieties can be produced with different shank diameters depending on what materials they will be used for and what grooves need to be made.
  • Taper shank models. The end of these drills is in the shape of a cone, it is securely attached to the chuck of a hand drill, a spindle. This model allows for maximum accuracy and centering during operation. All grooves in the material are the most even and neat. In addition, scratches and burrs will not form on structures. Conical models are easy to replace if they become dull. Such products allow you to create holes of different diameters.

Extended drills can also be divided into several separate groups depending on the design of the working part.

  • Screw. The working part of these models looks like an auger. Twist drills can also be divided into 2 categories - with cutters and with a conical nozzle. The design of such tools allows timely removal of the formed chips, ensures high accuracy during operation.
  • Feathers. These samples are taken when it is necessary to make depressions with a large diameter (about 50 millimeters). Feather types are usually used in cases where there are no high requirements for the quality and geometry of the holes. Models have a lower cost compared to other varieties. In the process of drilling with such a tool, a large amount of chips will be formed, which will need to be regularly removed by yourself.
  • Ring. These drills, like the previous version, make it possible to make holes of large diameter. They are more often used for woodworking, which is why they are also called wood crowns. Their design outwardly resembles a large ring, the edges of which have small sharp teeth. The drilling range with such tools is from 20 to 127 millimeters. As a rule, ring tools are immediately sold in large sets, which can include from 6 to 12 pieces.

Milling drills can be singled out separately. They are most often simply called cutters. They differ from all other models of long products in that their design presupposes the presence of special cutting edges located along the entire length of the tool.

Milling products first drill a small hole and then adjust it to the desired dimensions.

Often, it is the cutters that are used in cases where it is necessary to carry out complex processing of wooden structures.

An elongated drill with a countersink can also be distinguished separately. Such models are also more often used for woodworking. The countersink is a small attachment that consists of many sharp blades. It can significantly improve the quality of work. When drilling, this equipment will rotate rather quickly around its axis and at the same time gradually move along the direction.

A long drill with a countersink is the best option for machining end pieces. It is also suitable for giving the required profile, since it can slightly expand the depth for various elements, including bolts.

When using a long drill with a countersink, do not forget about the special small stop. This detail allows for the correct processing of the wood.

Special extra-long metal drills are also available today. They are considered the best option for processing thick steel structures.

The hardness of the metal base itself can be up to 1300 N / mm2.

Dimensions (edit)

The sizes of different models of extra long drills can vary significantly, which must be considered when purchasing them. The diameter of such products can vary from 1.5 to 20 millimeters. The total length of the tool is most often in the range of 70-300 millimeters. When choosing a model of a certain size, be sure to take into account the diameter of the chuck, the type of material that will need to be processed.

Popular manufacturers

In specialized stores, customers can now find a huge variety of long drills from different manufacturers.

  • DeWalt. This American company specializes in the production of various electrical equipment, tools, including long drills. In the range of products, the main place is occupied by drills for metal. They can be sold separately or as a whole set of several varieties. Most of these products come with a screw design.
  • Ruko. This German manufacturer specializes in the creation of metal cutting tools. In its assortment you can find models with a bored shank, step drills, models for spot welding. These products are made of high quality steel, which undergoes a special careful grinding. Many elongated models are made with a helical construction of the working part.
  • Heller. The German company produces various drilling equipment, cutters. The drills of this company most often have a spiral design of the working area. They provide high precision when drilling, dimensional stability. In addition, the tool allows for timely chip evacuation.
  • Reiko. The company specializes in the production of long left hand drills with a cylindrical or taper shank. The working area is usually spiral in shape. These models allow you to create precise and even holes without scratches or burrs.
