Time does not stand still, and the development of technology allows masters of their craft to come up with more and more improved household items. The wardrobe, as an indispensable thing in any interior, has not undergone practically any changes for many centuries in a row: a straight geometric design served as a container with swing doors. But not so long ago, practical Americans invented a wardrobe with sliding doors, which save space in the room due to doors sliding along metal runners.

These wardrobes received the prefix "compartment" to the name and turned out to be such a convenient invention that the model instantly gained popularity all over the world.

But not so long ago, a modified version came to replace the usual rectangular wardrobes - radial (or radial) wardrobes that can even more save precious centimeters of space and give the interior an incomparable aesthetic touch. What are their differences and advantages, let's try to figure it out in this article.

Distinctive features

The modern look of the cabinet with rounded corners will not leave indifferent lovers of smooth lines and streamlined designs. The door leaf moves along curved guides of various configurations, depending on the choice of model.

Radial cabinets have no sharp corners, thanks to which they create soft transitions in interior design, are safe for small children and are as spacious as possible.

Saving square meters is achieved due to the absence or small size of the side walls, which are typical for cabinets of a conventional rectangular design.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of the radius cabinet can be safely considered the ability to install it in any, even in a small-sized room. A wardrobe with smooth, curved lines can occupy an empty corner, disguise irregular wall geometry, zone space in a spacious studio, or make a smooth transition from one room to another.

The side walls of the cabinet can be of any size, including missing at all, without losing roominess.

Radial doors do not creak or loosen, they tightly close the cabinet space. The guides hold the doors in place, preventing them from "loosening".

As with every decision related to the choice of a particular item in the interior, radius cabinets also have some disadvantages that may not be in their favor. These include:

  • non-standard interior space. Boxes, drawers and rectangular laundry baskets may not fit in such a cabinet where the undulating door goes;
  • different depths of the shelves. Due to the fact that the cabinet door has a pronounced bend, in some models the shelves may be too deep, which is not always convenient for the arrangement of things. But if you put things in depth that do not need to be used constantly, then such an arrangement will turn into a plus, as a spacious storage for any kind of things;
  • high product and installation costs. However, this minus will be a plus for those who are not averse to emphasizing the respectability of their interior.

Design features

The mechanism of radial cabinets is based on guide rails of a certain curved shape, with the help of which the sashes move in the desired direction. The design of the cabinet itself can be cabinet or built-in.

Cabinet furniture usually has side walls as well as a top and bottom. This is a one-piece structure that can be moved, carried to a convenient place if you want to change the scene.

Built-in models do not have a body, save space due to the absence of walls and are most often located from floor to ceiling. This is the most spacious option, but before installing it, you need to clearly determine the location of the cabinet and the design, since the built-in furniture cannot be rearranged to another place.

Fastening mechanisms

Depending on the location of the mechanism with a rail and door rollers, radius cabinets are divided into suspended or support types of installation.

Suspended are attached to the ceiling or top of the wall, creating a non-threshold structure. This mechanism is most commonly used in built-in type models. When choosing the option of a suspended profile, it is necessary to take into account the strength of the ceiling, and in some cases it will have to be additionally strengthened. For example, a plasterboard ceiling will not withstand the weight of the volumetric doors of the radius cabinet and their constant use, so it makes sense to plan the installation of the cabinet together with the ceiling.

A great opportunity to save time and money by ordering the installation of a cabinet and a false ceiling in matching colors at the same time. In addition, this will allow you to plan in advance the location of the fixtures on the ceiling.

The supporting structure, on the other hand, does not depend on the ceiling, the weight of the doors falls on the lower rail, and the upper one serves only as a supporting element. The advantage of this design is that the ceiling can be made of any material; it does not have to be reinforced or changed if you have recently made repairs.

Varieties of forms

There are several forms of radius wardrobes. The choice of any of them depends on the layout of the room, its footage and, of course, the design features of the room. To determine the most suitable model, you need to consider all of them:

  • convex shape - radius cabinet in the form of a hemisphere with narrow side walls or without them at all. It fits well into empty niches, and the spaciousness of the interior space is achieved due to the streamlined volume of the semicircular door leaf;
  • concave shape - such a model has the shape of doors recessed inward relative to the side walls. Not so capacious in comparison with the convex shape, but it is able to give smooth lines to a room with irregular angles. Visually enlarges the space, gives it volume and roundness;
  • combined form, is a smooth transition of door leaves from convex to concave, forming a wave. If the space of the room allows - the combined wavy wardrobe will become a wonderful decoration of the interior, changing the usual outlines of the space;
  • round form radius cabinet resembles tall cylindrical billboards or volumetric columns. It can become an element of the zoning of the space of a large hall or office reception, but for small-sized premises this option will have to be excluded;
  • corner - the most popular model among all configurations of radius cabinets, having a triangle at its base. Perfectly fills an empty corner, it can be either convex or concave. The convex shape of the corner radius cabinet will create additional spaciousness due to the space that goes into the corner and the convex door. A concave corner cabinet will visually expand the space and make it streamlined.

Facade options

A wardrobe in the interior is a voluminous thing that attracts attention, therefore the harmony of the entire room as a whole depends on the design of the facade.The difference between wardrobes and their classic counterparts is that a wide variety of materials can be used for its design - plastic, glass, thin film.

You can choose a design option from an existing collection of models from the catalog, or order your own unique version that suits your interior.

The only limitation put by professional craftsmen and designers is chipboard sheets and mirrors. Wood shavings are not suitable for the curvature of the cabinet due to their inflexibility, and curved mirrors can greatly distort the image.

However, these restrictions do not in any way reduce the possibilities of decorating radius cabinets, because instead, a significant number of various options for finishing the door leaf are offered.

Photo printing

A fairly economical way to decorate the facade of a radius cabinet in the style of the interior and to your taste. Photo printing can be applied to various materials with any degree of roughness of the base. Thanks to the properties of a special paint, the pattern fits perfectly on plastic, glass and mirror surfaces. The photo print is durable, UV-resistant.

There are several types of photo printing:

  • solvent film - a method of applying paint on the thinnest film base;
  • solvent-based on matte or glossy paper - here the film is replaced by a paper web. It is much cheaper, but also less durable;
  • ultraviolet - drawing a pattern directly on the base of the material according to a pre-selected sketch. Microparticles of paint penetrate into the surface structure and are fixed with ultraviolet light. It is the most durable and impact-resistant type of photo printing.

Any of the chosen printing methods guarantees the brightness and realism of the image, dense or translucent pattern, sharp edges and high resolution.

Sandblasting drawing

Sandblasting technology is the application of patterns by spraying sand particles of different diameters on a pre-selected stencil. It can be various floral motifs, images of animals, beautiful silhouettes, abstract compositions. After application, the pattern is covered with polymer water-repellent compounds, making it durable and easy to maintain.

Suitable for both glass surfaces and mirrors. If you nevertheless decide to choose a mirror surface for the facade of the door of a radius cabinet, then the places of refraction of the lines can be decorated with a sandblasting pattern and some areas of the canvas can be made matte.

Laser engraving

The creation of a laser drawing is the latest technology in modern design. A laser beam removes a microscopic layer from a material - glass or mirror, creating a matte surface in the form of a pre-planned pattern in the computer version of the laser machine itself. The graphic abilities of laser equipment allow you to create truly masterpieces of any shape and configuration, up to the effect of 3D images.

The laser drawing itself is colorless, but subject to coloring. To do this, before drawing the pattern, the material is coated with special compounds, which, upon completion of the work, allow the pattern to play with different colors.

Internal filling

The variant of the internal layout of the radius wardrobe will depend on its purpose and location in the room. The capacity of the cabinet is determined by the functional distribution of the space inside, and in the case of a radial sliding wardrobe, which occupies an area from floor to ceiling, you can think over the use of every useful centimeter.

The most convenient way to plan the space in such a way that it is convenient for you is to visually divide it into three equal parts, where little-used items will be placed at the very top, and the rest - at eye level and below.

Depending on the purpose of the cabinet, the internal content will be different:

  • if the wardrobe is a wardrobe, then in the upper part of it it is better to arrange shelves for items that are least used, or for seasonal items and hats. In the middle part there are shelves for everyday, frequently used things, and in the lower part - for shoes or leave free space for large items;
  • volumetric radius wardrobes can be a mini-dressing room, including not only shelves, drawers and a bar for hangers, but also small dressers for storing jewelry or household items, a mirror for fitting;
  • the principle of space distribution for bookcases will differ from wardrobes. Shelves of a certain size are selected for books. If this is an office space or an office, then the size of files and folders that will be placed in the closet is taken into account;
  • radius cabinets can be fully equipped for a study and computer equipment with a pull-out desk;
  • in the kitchen radius cabinet, metal mesh-dryers, hanging holders for kitchen utensils, drawers for cutlery can be used;
  • radius cabinets designed for a sideboard, as a rule, have glass shelves and a transparent door leaf. They will be an excellent showcase for displaying beautiful sets, art objects, figurines or photographs.

Style directions

It may seem that modern radius wardrobes can only fit a certain style of interior, but this is far from the case.

Of course, high-tech and minimalism styles are the main style directions in which all types of radius cabinets will look absolutely harmonious. But with the right choice of form and design of facades a radius wardrobe can add an original twist to almost any style.

Consider the most popular style directions in relation to radius wardrobes.

Minimalism

This style is distinguished by the practicality of furnishings and the minimum number of items with their maximum functionality. The minimalist style gravitates towards open space and a lot of air. Based on these basic tenets of style, a concave-shaped radius wardrobe, made in the colors of the walls, will smooth the angle, visually increase the space, and create additional volume and depth.

High tech

The latest technology, bizarre abstract shapes, "space" design, steel and black and white colors. Radial cabinets in this style can be of any shape and size, they will perfectly fit into the decor of the room if you decorate the facade with silver photo printing or laser engraving.

Classic

Austere style with clear lines and high taste. The design of the wardrobe with smooth lines must be chosen very carefully so as not to disturb the refined atmosphere of the style. A white concave cabinet, with a glossy surface and gold stripes inside the door compartments, might work here.

Ethno

Ethnic ornaments are suitable for any shape of a radius cabinet, if they are combined in color with the interior of the room. The East Asian style is perfectly complemented by a combined radius wardrobe - its wavy shape with motifs of oriental patterns in golden and red tones will become a kind of "Chinese screen" in the interior.

Modern

The modernist style, which has replaced the classics, gravitates towards rounded shapes, therefore, the semicircle of the convex-shaped radius cabinet will perfectly emphasize the style features and your taste. The wardrobe can be made in tones of expensive wood species with mirror or glass inserts.

Interesting interior solutions

Each piece of furniture needs its own ideal place in order to be as functional as possible, not get in the way and harmoniously fit into the surrounding space. In this regard, a radial sliding wardrobe is an indispensable assistant where you need to hide the wrong corners, save space or use space where no piece of furniture fits.

In the hallway between two interior doors, a concave wardrobe will fill the space, saving square meters and providing usable storage space.

The convex hemisphere of the cabinet can serve as doors for an ordinary pantry, giving the interior a solid and respectable look.

A combined radius wardrobe to match the furniture is suitable for a spacious living room. It can be in saturated colors or almost transparent with laser engraving and photo printing elements.

For a bedroom, it is better to choose a discreet wardrobe of a configuration convenient for you personally. For example, the "Radion" model wardrobe, its symmetrical concave design, decorated with thin wenge or oak leather, will add extra comfort to the bedroom. And the milky plastic inserts will enliven the surface of the door leaf and add sophistication to the bedroom.
