It is customary to call a respirator a means of personal protection of the respiratory organs of a person from exposure to poisonous aerosols and gases. In this article, we will talk in detail about the RU-60M model.

Description and scope

Respirator RU-60M was developed by the Ministry of Chemical and Oil Refining Industry of the USSR in the early 70s of the XX century. It is recommended to use it if the concentration of aerosols, gases, vapors, smoke, dust mixtures, unsafe for human health, is exceeded in the air. In addition to being used for this purpose, the aforementioned respirator is widely used in agriculture when people come into contact with pesticides and fertilizers, as well as in everyday life. However, it is not advisable to wear this universal protective agent when the concentration of dust exceeds 100 mg per cubic meter.

The characteristic of breathing resistance at an air flow rate of 30 liters per minute is not more than 95 Pa during inhalation and not more than 65 Pa during exhalation.

The respirator can be used at temperatures from -40 degrees Celsius to +55 degrees in any climatic zone of Russia. The weight declared by the manufacturer is about 340 g.

Device

The filtering universal respirator RU-60M consists of several parts.

  • Half mask made of rubber with a headband. It has a comfortable shape, snug fit, and has straps with easy adjustment. Available in 1, 2 and 3 sizes.
  • One exhalation valve and 2 inhalation valves.
  • The mechanical device for shutting off the flow is an obturator made of knitted fabric.
  • A pair of filter cartridges that contain a special absorber, an aerosol filter and a device for their replacement.

Types of cartridges depending on the tasks

Taking into account the specific environmental conditions, the RU-60M respirator is equipped with different types of filter cartridges. Depending on the physical, chemical and toxic properties of the impurities in the atmosphere, they differ significantly from each other in the composition and action of the elements of absorption and filtration.

Each type of cartridges must be individually marked.

  • Cartridge brand "A". It is used to protect for 35 hours from toxic vapors of organic compounds such as gasoline, acetone, kerosene, carbon disulfide, aniline, alcohols, chemicals containing chlorine and phosphorus, ethers, toluene.
  • Marking "B" protects a person for 32 hours from the following acidic gaseous substances: chlorine, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen chloride, hydrocyanic acid, chemicals with phosphorus and chlorine.
  • Cartridges "KD" within 20 hours provide protection from toxic substances such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and their mixtures.
  • Cartridges marked "G". Prevent mercury vapor from entering the body for 16 hours.

It is important to know that all cartridges described do not have an aerosol filter. Accordingly, they will not be able to protect the respiratory organs from fine dust and smoke, since it freely passes between the granules of activated carbon with a size of 1 by 3 mm.

Storage rules

Remember that the date of manufacture must be on the packaging. The warranty storage of the RU-60M respirator and replaceable cartridges is 3 years, except for the “G” marking. They are stored for 1 year. Besides, cartridges marked "G" must be packed and stored in tightly sealed plastic bags.

Both respirators and cartridges should be properly stored in cardboard boxes or wooden boxes in unopened rooms at temperatures from -25 degrees Celsius to +25. Relative humidity should not be higher than 80%. It is necessary to exclude the effect of direct sunlight, poisonous vapors on the products and do not expose them to any mechanical stress.
