Poplin or satin - what is the difference and which is better for bedding?

Bed linen should be not only beautiful, but also pleasant to the touch, hypoallergenic and of high quality. On a bed covered with such linen, one sleeps well, and a good sleep is the key to an excellent mood for the whole day. So it is better to take the question of choosing a bed set with full responsibility.

The best option is natural fabrics from cotton, linen, silk. They are breathable, absorb water perfectly, are not subject to electrification and are hypoallergenic. Fabrics made from various natural fibers have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Linen fabrics are rough and require careful ironing. Silk textiles are too expensive; moreover, they slip and cool the body. The indisputable leader among natural textiles is cotton fabrics. They can be 100% natural and blended (with the addition of synthetic fibers). Most often, coarse calico, satin and poplin are used for the manufacture of bedding sets.

Satin is a 100% cotton fabric (very rarely with synthetic inclusions) with a double weave. One of the threads is thin twisted, which gives the satin fabric its distinctive shine and smoothness. The amount of curl of the thread determines the sheen strength of the textile. The seamy side has a slight roughness, this prevents the linen from sliding off the bed. Satin is also distinguished by a high weave density - up to 130 threads per 1 sq. cm.

Sets made of this fabric perfectly absorb moisture, cool in heat and warm enough in winter, breathable, do not electrify and do not cause allergic rejection. They do not "shrink", are durable and strong. For sewing bed linen, several types of satin are used - bleached, one-colored and printed.

Now about poplin. Previously, poplin fabric was made from silk, now - from cotton, occasionally with synthetic additives. The peculiarity of poplin is a simple weave (coarse calico) of warp and weft threads of different thickness, which gives a pattern of a small scar on the surface of the fabric. Distinguish between bleached, plain dyed, multicolored and printed poplin.

Hygroscopic, antistatic, breathable, durable and hypoallergenic - this is an incomplete list of the advantages of this wonderful fabric. It practically does not wrinkle, perfectly retains its shape, does not shrink or stretch during washing. The price of poplin is low, approximately within the cost of coarse calico, but according to tactile sensations, poplin is much more pleasant and lighter.

Poplin has a lower density compared to satin, but due to this, it is lighter and more airy. Also, poplin, unlike satin fabrics, is prone to shedding, especially during heat treatment (high-temperature washing, ironing). A pattern on satin can be created in the process of weaving threads (satin-jacquard, printed satin), on poplin - only by dyeing or printing an image.

What to choose for bed linen - satin or poplin? Each fabric has many advantages, so consumers recommend guided by their impressions: feel the textiles you choose, look at the colors of the offered sets, calculate your finances. Satin is more expensive than poplin, but also much more durable.

According to consumer reviews, the majority still prefers poplin bedding, since the ratio of price and quality of textiles is optimal. When choosing a ready-made kit, buyers are advised not to hesitate, to unfold the fabric to check the naturalness of its composition. If a faint crackle is heard, synthetic threads are also woven into the fabric. A small percentage of them is permissible, even useful - the fabric becomes more durable, wrinkles less, etc. If there are more than 50% artificial threads, it is better not to use such fabric for making the bed. It will not allow air to pass through, absorb moisture and static electricity.
