Columns are always associated with luxurious interiors and elegant style. At all times, such structures were present in the architectural design of original and refined buildings. In modern buildings, columns are also often used, only the materials from which they are made have changed. The pretentious cold marble was replaced by polyurethane columns. Analogs look no less presentable, but they are appropriate in a small area and are available for purchase by most people.

Advantages and disadvantages

All the quality advantages and disadvantages of polyurethane columns are influenced by the characteristics of the material itself. Many people know polyurethane as foam of special density - hence both positive and negative properties of products follow. And there is a whole list of them. It is worth starting a description of the material with its advantages.

  • Affordable cost. In comparison with decorative counterparts, for example, made of plaster or marble. Even spectacular patterned polyurethane columns will be ten times more economical.
  • Lightness. The installation of a polyurethane product can be easily done in-house.
  • Convenient transportation. Columns do not even have to be cut into segments, as is done with columns made of other materials. Basically, such a product is sold as a whole as a product 2.5-3 m in length. In infrequent cases, for the sake of convenient transportation in production, the structure is divided in two. Half-columns are considered an even more convenient option for transportation and device.
  • Easy installation.

Of course, even dense foam is not a perfect material. The buyer must first understand what he has to work and live with. By the number of negative nuances, the attitude towards the product is often formed. Of the disadvantages of polyurethane columns, it is worth highlighting a number of factors.

  • Doubtful durability. Here it is already clear that foam structures must be handled carefully. Of course, not a single owner will load them on purpose, spoil or break them. But this is only a one-sided judgment. On the other hand, the columns are not attached to the ceiling, which is difficult to reach and accidentally damaged. Products are placed against the walls and along them - it is quite possible to hook them somehow, even with your hand. If there are curly protrusions on the false columns made of polyurethane material, they can be crumpled inadvertently. This point should be taken into account and taken into account during the operation of decorative products.
  • The polyurethane columns need some tweaking during installation. But in fact, this is influenced by their quality and measure of density. If a problem arises here, they will have to be carefully covered with putty in order to hide small pores under a thin layer of finishing, giving out the texture and "origin" of the column. Puttying such products is not as easy as it seems to uninformed people. Especially when there are intricate patterns on the surface.

In principle, these products have no more significant shortcomings. Of course, it will not be difficult to find a few more minor nuances, for example, the flammability of artificial material. But this is such an insignificant minus against the background of the price of polyurethane structures and its other advantages.

That is why it has become so widespread.

The classification of polyurethane columns is carried out according to the following criteria - the presence or absence of relief on the surface and the place of installation.

The form

The surfaces of the false column can differ in appearance - smooth or embossed. Despite the fact that the embossed options actually have a finished look, the preferences of modern pros and designers tend to lean towards sleek columns. They are more readily used at the finishing stage, since it is easier and more profitable to work with a less pronounced structure.

The smooth structure is less likely to be damaged during operation. In addition, individual design is possible with it - it is much easier to give a smooth surface an individual and special look. Almost any decorative plaster can be applied to it, painted with paints with a textured structure, and much more.

In general, when it comes to custom finishes, smooth column surfaces are the best choice.

Location

Surely many people know the concept of a half-column - a product cut into two equal parts in full length, close to the wall. This is considered a purely decorative design.

A full-size polyurethane pseudo-column, placed, for example, in the central part of the room, is even able to cope with the load-bearing function (depending on the size). Actually, this is something like a fixed formwork, consisting of a base (heel), a central element and an upper part, which has to perform the function of a floor support. In this installation option, the space inside the polyurethane columns is filled with concrete using reinforcement. This is the described column - an analogue of marble, wood and plaster products. Then the foam is given the necessary smoothness by applying a putty or gypsum solution and painted in the desired shade.

There is another option for such products - an undivided column made of durable polyurethane. Its disadvantage is that other interior elements are "fitted" to it. These are constructions with stucco molding, angular variations of columns, "lace texture" of the surface.

When considering the choice of polyurethane decorative columns for the interior, you need to take into account the dimensions of the products (width and diameter), the shape or structure of the surface. The most impractical choice is serrated columns.

Of course, it looks original, but the protruding teeth remain in their original form for a very short time.

How to place in the interior?

The placement of columns is influenced primarily by the style set by the owners in the interior. Their location depends on the desire to implement a certain concept.

The classic option means installation in the corners. This solution helps to maintain the overall tone of the created interior. But this decoration method is only suitable for large areas. Therefore, you should first think over every nuance. In any case, such an element only adds to the design, and does not fill it entirely with it.

The installation of products such as polyurethane false columns is permissible in a room for any purpose, be it a living room, dining room or bedroom. The task of such a decorative structure is to add zest to the interior style, giving a unique look to the bare walls. So, with columns it is easy to visually divide one space into different zones. This creates the impression of classical antiquity and sophistication. Whether they are simply smooth or ribbed is not so important, the only thing that matters is how the interior changes for the better with them.

How to decorate the facade of a house?

Polyurethane columns can effectively decorate the facade of a building. Such design will give external quality and status to any structure. Basically, for this purpose, the so-called wall decoration is used.Polyurethane products are distinguished by resistance to temperature extremes, so they are able to decorate the entrances to buildings for a long time.

False columns made of lightweight material give meaning to standard buildings. If we compare the usual facade and the one that is decorated with columns, even buildings that are completely identical from the beginning get striking differences from each other.

And also columns made of polystyrene often cover external communications laid along the facade (gas pipes, electrical wiring cable, etc.).

Beautiful examples

Double elements look chic and harmonious in the interior. In one room, depending on its area, 2-3 structures can be located at the same time. They should overlap or be identical in style of performance. Thus, a single composition is obtained, and not an exhibition of elements, each of which draws attention to itself.

Columns can be used not only to decorate the room, but also to use them functionally. For example, equip a series of hidden shelves to accommodate all sorts of little things. Or install a polyurethane semi-column with shelves in the corner of the bathroom, placing cosmetics or themed figurines there.

It is not only stylish, but also practical to install sconces or lamps in retro style on polyurethane elements. Spectacular columns allow you to get volumetric lighting and favorably emphasize the style of the interior.

To create a classic atmosphere on a small footage, it is better to use corner-type columns made of polyurethane. They will keep the tone set. At the same time, it is important to choose furniture and decor that match the style. This technique brings a touch of luxury into the interior without cluttering it.
