Polyurethane is a polymer material based on rubber. Products made of polyurethane are resistant to water, acids and organic solvents. In addition, the polyurethane material has a high resistance to mechanical damage, it has flexibility and ductility. Modern industry produces decorative ceiling plinths from polyurethane. With their help, you can not only decorate the room, but also hide some minor imperfections in the surface of the walls and ceiling.

Fillets made of polyurethane are classified as finishing elements, which are performed at the last stages of the renovation of the premises.

Installation methods

With the help of polyurethane skirting boards, you can create various interiors that will be distinguished by their originality and uniqueness of design. The style of the ceiling is able to set the tone for the entire interior of the room.

  • To create caissons, 2 types of ceiling plinths are used - narrow and wide. When constructing a full-size structure, one wide plinth can also be used, which has 2-3 transition steps. This decorative molding is placed against the ceiling, thereby forming a recess in the form of a niche. In a niche, contour lighting is installed or hidden electrical wiring is mounted.
  • With the help of a decorative skirting board, you can also create lighting with an open circuit. Fixation of the LED strip or duralight is performed along the edge of the polyurethane molding. If you apply a wider version of the plinth, then neon light tubes can be installed along the contour in its niche.
  • With the help of polyurethane molding, the height of the ceiling can be visually adjusted. If you use a wide plinth, then the high ceiling will visually become lower, and when using narrow fillets, the low ceilings will seem higher than they really are.

The ease of installation and durability of the material make polyurethane decor a widespread and leading material used for decorating the interiors of premises for various purposes.

How to cut?

Before starting the installation work on the installation of a polyurethane ceiling plinth, it is necessary to cut and prepare it. The cutting of the material is carried out using a special device called a construction miter box. If you place a decorative skirting board in this fixture, then it can be cut at right angles or at an angle of 45 °. Before cutting the polyurethane ceiling fillets, measure their required length and take this into account when cutting the corner.

To complete the cutting process without the use of a miter box, you may need the advice of experienced artisans.

  • Take a strip of hard cardboard and draw two parallel straight lines on it. Use these lines to build an equilateral square. Then draw the lines diagonally - these marks will become a guide for you how to cut the material exactly at an angle of 45 °.
  • To prevent the plinth from slipping during cutting, place an even wooden block along one of the lines of the square - you can rest against it when cutting, like against the side of a miter box.
  • In most cases, walls have a certain curvature, and cutting a precisely adjusted 45 ° angle may not be relevant for them. In this case, decorative moldings for the ceiling are cut according to the markings made on the surface of the ceiling.To work comfortably, in this situation, flexible skirting options are most suitable.
  • For marking on the ceiling, you need to attach a decorative plinth to the attachment point on the ceiling, and then with a pencil mark the places where the edges of the product pass. Do the same for the second adjacent ceiling element. In places where the lines will intersect, you need to draw a diagonal - this will be the junction of the decor at the desired angle.

The option of marking a polyurethane ceiling plinth directly at the place of its attachment is considered the most accurate, since this method allows you to avoid mistakes and overspending of expensive design material.

What do you need?

To glue the polyurethane skirting board, you will need to use an acrylic sealant or a finishing putty. To complete the installation work, you will need to prepare:

  • acrylic sealant;
  • finishing putty;
  • a special mounting type gun required to squeeze out acrylic sealant;
  • construction miter box;
  • pencil, carpentry square, tape measure;
  • a sharp knife for construction work with a set of replaceable blades or a hacksaw for metal;
  • small rubber soft spatula;
  • a bucket for diluting dry putty;
  • construction mixer for high-quality dilution of putty.

Having prepared all the necessary tools, you can proceed to the next stage of the installation work.

How to install correctly?

The good thing about polyurethane ceiling decor is that it is quite simple and quick to attach it to the work surface. It is best to glue long parts on the ceiling together, this procedure does not require construction qualifications and can be done by hand.

Before starting work, repair or replace electrical wiring... All old communications are dismantled and replaced with new ones, since after the installation of a decorative ceiling plinth it will be more difficult to do this. If the electrical wiring is planned to be laid in a niche of a polyurethane skirting board, that is, in a special cable channel, then the wires for this procedure are also prepared in advance and fixed so that they do not interfere with the installation work.

Before gluing polyurethane moldings, you need to complete the preparatory amount of work. Since gluing the skirting board is a finishing finish, it is important that all other work related to the preparatory plastering of the walls in the room has already been completed before it starts. Wall painting or wallpapering is done after the moldings are glued into place. If you want the skirting board to be not white, but to have a certain shade, installation and painting are not combined, the moldings are painted after the moment they are glued to the ceiling.

Suspended ceiling structures and wall tiles are also pre-made before the moldings are glued. This will help you align the corners of the skirting board more accurately based on the finished wall and ceiling surfaces.

Before you start cutting the ceiling fillets, you need to mark the ceiling in the way they will be attached. First of all, determine the length of the segments for installation. For this, the ceiling plinth is laid on the floor, bringing it as tightly as possible to the wall. Next, using a tape measure, measure the desired length of the decor and put a mark on it in the place where it is necessary to trim.

After the length is determined, the decorative plinth is brought to the ceiling and a line is drawn along the outer edge. The same is done with the second docking element. When two straight lines intersect, the required joint angle of two ceiling fillets is formed. On the plinth, mark the place where the trimming is to be done to join the corner.

Fillet trimming is performed according to preliminary marking using a sharp carpenter's knife or a hacksaw for metal.If joining two elements can be a difficult task, a special corner decorative element will help to simplify it, which joins two decorative fillets, cut at an angle of 90 °.

Fitting of joints can be performed at both external and internal corners.

For work, they use a miter box, stencil or markings made directly on the ceiling surface.

The ceiling plinth is cut off for corner joining as follows: the fillet in the position on the left is placed in the bed of the miter box, pressing it with its nearest edge to the side of this device. The hacksaw is placed in the miter box on the left. Next, the bar is cut. This will be the plank on the left side of the corner. The right bar is cut off like this: the fillet is brought into the miter box on the right and a cut is made on the right with a hacksaw.

When two fillets are joined for the inner corner, they proceed in the same way, but in a mirror order.

If gluing is carried out using acrylic sealant, then the end of the cap is first cut off from the tube and placed in a construction assembly gun. Using an assembly gun, a zigzag line of sealant is applied to the back surface of the fillet.

Next, the decor is brought close to the ceiling and, according to the markings, is attached to the surface. When installing the plinth, the greatest attention should be paid to the places of corner joints, pressing them tightly with your fingers to the ceiling or wall (depending on the type of molding design). If, due to the edges of the ceiling plinth, an extra sealant appears, it is immediately removed with a dry cloth, simultaneously rubbing the area of the abutment seam. Then they take the next decorative strip and proceed to further installation, systematically moving along the perimeter of the room. For vertical joining of decorative fillets, the sealant is applied not only to the entire length of the molding, but also to its end parts.

After the decorative ceiling moldings are glued, the corner and vertical joints are finished with a finishing filler using a small spatula made of rubber material. During the day, the moldings are allowed to adhere properly to the ceiling.

After polymerization of the acrylic sealant, you can start installing the backlight or laying hidden electrical wiring.

Recommendations

To perform a high-quality installation of a polyurethane ceiling skirting board, read some recommendations, which you may find useful:

  • before you start gluing the decor, take a small piece of it and test in action the adhesive you bought - this will allow you to understand its properties and behavior in the process of work;
  • if you did not have acrylic sealant for installation work, you can use a glue called "Liquid nails" and apply it, having previously studied the instructions;
  • after the decorative skirting board is fixed to the ceiling, it is necessary to immediately wipe it with a damp cloth, thereby removing excess glue;
  • immediately after gluing decorative ceiling fillets they are pre-primed for painting, and then, after a day, they are painted in two layers.

          Before starting the installation, polyurethane products must be kept indoors for at least 24 hours. This is done so that the decorative material straightens out and adapts to the humidity of the room, as well as to its temperature regime.
