MDF panels for wall decoration are sheets of wood residues. MDF wall boards are distinguished by their strength, ease of installation, aesthetic appeal and a higher level of environmental friendliness compared to previous analogues (fiberboard).

Varieties

MDF boards can have various shapes and functionalities. The thickness of the products can vary from 6 mm to 6 cm.In the interior of apartments and houses, decorative panels with a thickness of 6 mm to 1.2 cm are used.

They can be classified into three groups based on the size of the slabs.

  • large sheet (thickness from 3 mm to 1.2 cm, height up to 30 cm, width up to 15 cm);
  • tiled (thickness from 7 mm to 1 cm, height and width - up to 10 cm) square or rectangular panels allow you to create exclusive mosaic panels on the walls, you can combine slabs of different textures and colors;
  • rack (have a distant resemblance to the "clapboard"; thickness - from 8 mm to 1.2 cm, length - up to 30 cm).

Texture options

Three methods are used for processing panels:

  • veneering;
  • staining;
  • lamination.

Veneered boards are pasted over with the thinnest layer of wood, so they cannot be visually distinguished from real wood. Before painting, the boards must be primed and putty. The paint coatings and enamels used for the panels are very flexible and spread well over the surface.

Lamination of plates is pasting them with PVC film. It can be shiny or matte, multi-colored, with patterns, photo printing, imitating natural stone, brickwork, natural wood and other surfaces.

Sometimes, if a design decision requires it, the plates can be processed with expensive materials - for example, mother of pearl (the price of one such plate can reach 25 thousand rubles).

Applications

Veneered panels can be used as wall cladding in the bedroom, hallway, living room, loggia. Due to the good resistance of the material to moisture (applies to painted and laminated samples), it can be used even in the kitchen area. In bathrooms, decorative panels are rarely used; they are used to make a bathroom set.

In the hallways, the entire wall is paneled from top to bottom, the rooms focus on one wall or any part of it. Designers willingly use veneered panels in the interior, since it is possible to quickly assemble a wall panel from them, which will add an interesting touch to the room. This technique is especially relevant for the head of the bed. Also, MDF boards are used to decorate the walls for audio and video equipment in the guest room.

In the kitchen area, MDF is used to decorate the apron. The tone of the panels and the texture should match the design of the façade and the style of the installed appliances. MDF panels can often be seen in office buildings and public institutions (hospitals), where there is always a large crowd of people.

The reasons for their popularity as a building material for public places are as follows:

  • acceptable price;
  • high wear resistance;
  • ease of installation;
  • aesthetic appearance;
  • ease of care.

Among the disadvantages of the material can be noted the large weight, the need for special fasteners, a large amount of dust during installation.

Styles of design

In a room with a classic (English) design, MDF panels are used to trim the bottom of the wall. This is in harmony with the design of doorways, fireplaces, stairs.

Panels with 3D drawings are used to create an original interior.Such masterpieces are created according to unique sketches on special milling machines.

Installation features

Rectangular boards can be laid horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They are attached to a wooden or metal lathing, as well as directly to the wall surface if it is perfectly flat. Panel edges are trimmed or grooved to facilitate subsequent assembly.

When laying MDF panels, finishing corners, self-tapping screws, clamps, nails are used. The panels can be installed without gaps or with spacers (the distance of 1 cm between the panels is formed by using additional elements made of wood or veneer).

Decorative plates can be embossed, for example, imitate lining. More complex surface textures are referred to as 3D panels.

Among the most famous and demanded manufacturers of veneered panels the following brands can be noted:

The factories of the above companies are located in the USA, Europe and China. Among domestic manufacturers, Plitspichprom, Kronostar, and Russian Laminate stand out.
