The original fabric base gives textile wallpaper the well-deserved status of an environmentally friendly and attractive finish for any wall. Such products perfectly absorb noise and are resistant to sunlight.

What it is?

Wallpaper is one of the most popular types of finishing materials, which is distinguished by its stylish appearance, low cost and long service life. Textile wallpapers are quite expensive, but in the two above-mentioned parameters, they are significantly ahead of other popular varieties of wallpaper.

Advantages and disadvantages

Textile wallpaper is a rather expensive finishing option, but the interior decorated in this way looks impressive. Like other products, textile wallpapers have both their advantages and a number of disadvantages, which you should know about before buying.

The main advantages of using these products are as follows.

  • Completely safe for health. Non-toxic.
  • Such wallpapers can accumulate heat and give it back.
  • They are a natural sound insulator, as they provide protection against various noise stimuli.
  • The connecting seams between the stripes are almost invisible, which is important for creating the effect of the integrity of the coating.
  • Such wallpapers look expensive, the textiles here are actually beautiful, which causes respect for the owner of the house, who can purchase such a chic finish for his home.
  • They remain in their original form for a long time;
  • Textiles easily endure dry cleaning.

This wallpaper also has its drawbacks.

  • These wallpapers quickly get dirty, "collect" dust.
  • They absorb moisture, are afraid of steam and absorb odors. That is why it does not recommend them to decorate the walls of kitchens and bathrooms.
  • It is almost impossible to stick these wallpapers on the wall without the help of a professional, because the coating is too atypical, even if it is a high-quality imitation of a fabric texture.
  • High price.

Modern textile wallpapers are divided into 3 subtypes.

  • Liquid;
  • Fabric based products;
  • Cloths where the textile is the top layer.

Liquid products are classified as wallpaper from textiles conditionally, because they contain not fabric, but a low percentage of cotton or silk fibers.

Fabric based decor is vinyl backed with non-woven backing.

Wallpaper, where the fabric is the top layer, are divided into several types, for example, by the type of base - into paper and foam rubber, by the type of the top layer - into linen or felt, in width - into products from 90 cm to 3 m (roll - 90- 120 cm, seamless - 280-310 cm).

All subspecies of wallpaper have characteristic specific features.

  • Wallpaper from textiles based on synthetics. In such material, there is no paper composition - the top of the canvas is glued to the foam rubber. The material will save you from cold weather and noise, and care will become easier - these wallpapers are not afraid of a vacuum cleaner.
  • Jute products. Jute is a material that can be used to create the top layer of wallpaper. Ropes are often made of it, jute itself has a structure of fibers, which is visible to the naked eye. This structure will hide various wall imperfections in the room and will be able to withstand normal cleaning.
  • Silk wallpaper. The main factor here is the feeling of a comfortable touch to the surface, while even a synthetic base will not make this material inexpensive, therefore it is produced mainly by separate order.
  • Linen wallpaper. They look great, have good characteristics, and have an affordable cost. In all their properties, they are similar to the more expensive jute wallpaper, but they do not have such a pronounced fibrous texture, therefore they cannot hide the unevenness of the surface that is under them.
  • Velor wallpaper. They have a high price due to the peculiarities of their production. A thin nylon pile is gently applied to the paper base. This coating is the softest, but its main feature is its indispensability in the conditions of rather dusty spaces. Dust is not visible in the pile and it can be vacuumed, and then there will simply be no stains on the surface.
  • Felt wallpaper. They are very diverse. Such a product can be produced from real felt and from its synthetic substitutes (microfiber or polyester). When gluing, they are difficult, but they have all the qualities of a textile material, and they can even be wiped with a damp cloth. It is best to do this very carefully, without the use of chemicals.
  • They are in great demand vinyl wallpapers or, as they are also called, washable coatings. Produced on the basis of paper, non-woven, fabric. The top layer is made of PVC, which is carefully applied to the base using printers, and then this layer must be processed by embossing and silvering, followed by varnish. Vinyl woven wallpaper is the most durable and virtually indestructible.
  • Bamboo wallpaper known for high wear resistance, they are used in many places. Natural bamboo stems are attached to fabrics and are used to decorate walls and furniture sets. They are glued to concrete and brick, adhere well to wood. They are not afraid of direct sunlight.
  • Recently there was an opportunity to purchase original fabric self-adhesive wallpaper... It is predominantly a soft matte canvas, fixed to a glue base. Before pasting, the backing material is removed from the canvas, and the cut is glued to a previously prepared surface. So you can decorate not only walls, but also doors and even some interior items.

These covers are very easily removed if necessary and re-hung in another place. At the same time, they will not leave any traces on the wall at all.

Each of the above types has certain features, which is why when buying, you need to take into account not only the decorative qualities of all these products, but also their structural features, environmental properties, and the degree of durability. For ceilings today, it has become very popular to use stretch wallpaper with a fabric texture - an original solution that will appeal to many homeowners.

Also, you should think about whether you will be buying the already familiar wallpaper rolls or seamless textile wallpaper.

Wallpaper rolls consist of 2 layers - the bottom layer of paper or non-woven fabric and the front layer of textile material. On the basis there is a layer of fabric - cotton, silk, viscose, jute, linen. From above, such a surface is treated with special compounds that help repel dust from products.

You will also like seamless wallpaper, which looks like one huge roll of fabric with a width of 295 to 320 cm. Such a one-piece woven covering is applied to the walls in order to glue the entire room at once. At the same time, there is a single seam that allows you to make the interior more original.

Textile seamless wallpaper is treated with a special impregnation so that the liquid is not absorbed, but, as it were, rolled off them.

These wallpapers look very impressive and very expensive.

Types of bases

Today you can find fabric wallpapers based on non-woven, paper and synthetics. Paper and non-woven are common details of wall decoration, but such a basis as foam rubber has been used not so long ago.

  • Textile wallpaper on a familiar paper basis - the most common type, since the availability of paper makes the material cheaper to manufacture, which affects the final price for an ordinary buyer.For gluing wallpaper based on paper, you will have to prepare pieces of a certain length. With glue, you need to grease the part of the product prepared for pasting and leave it for a couple of minutes to soak. After that, a layer of glue should be applied to a previously prepared dry and clean wall and a piece of wallpaper should be glued.
  • The most expensive are textiles. non-woven in the form of material in a roll and seamless tapestries. The non-woven base makes the wallpaper lightweight, helps to avoid deformations when working with them. A characteristic feature of such a base is that the glue is applied only to the wall. The wallpaper itself is not smeared with an adhesive.
  • Original textiles with foam base... They hide uneven walls, create a layer of noise and heat insulation. When purchasing such finishing materials, pay attention to their thickness. It can be from 2 to 5 mm. The thicker the base, the higher the insulation performance of the coating.

Textile wallpaper can have one seam for the entire perimeter of the room. Such pasting of products is made according to the principle of working with a wall tapestry - a large one-piece piece of cloth is simply glued completely into the room. Openings for interior doors and window openings are made out after the end of all work.

The positive aspect of this design is its relative visual integrity. If the material is cut like ordinary wallpaper, then it is glued in the usual way.

Colors and designs

When choosing the colors of your new wall coverings, you must be very clearly aware of what kind of effect you want to get with their help, and think over how harmoniously the selected textile wallpaper will be combined with furniture and other interior items in the room for which they are intended.

If, for example, you want to visually reduce the space, buy products with a large catchy pattern.

If this is a small apartment, then it is better to purchase coverings with a rare alternating pattern or wallpaper in light shades with a minimum number of color patterns.

The color scheme is a special topic for conversation, because any color affects a person in different ways, and therefore much when choosing may depend on what kind of psychological mood in the room you want to create with the help of new wallpaper.

  • Red wallpaper in the bedroom will give energy and enthusiasm. But this color is not suitable for kitchens or dining rooms.
  • For the nursery, you should choose pastel colors, for the bedroom - warm and beige, abandoning saturated colors, for example, blue.
  • Also, the color options for wall coverings and their combinations may depend on the overall decor. For oriental interiors, combinations of white, black, brown and red tones of varying degrees of saturation are characteristic.
  • Traditional interiors can be created with tapestry-inspired wallpapers in soothing colors. Dark accents can also be used here, but just a little.
  • If you are decorating a room in the Art Nouveau or minimalist style, then you can pick up wallpaper in steel colors.

Brands

The most famous manufacturers of textile coatings are located in Europe. The products of such brands from Italy as Arlin and Sangiorgio are very popular, here it is also worth mentioning the French Zuber and Calcutta and Omexco from Belgium.

Stylish appearance of these wallpapers and their excellent workmanship will give any interior a special originality and exclusivity, and if you wish, you can always choose textile wallpapers for rooms decorated in any style. You will also find the fabric-based wallpaper you need in the collections of such firms as Architects Paper (USA), Sangetsu (Japan), A Fromental, Sanderson (England), KT Exclusive and Rasch (Germany). None of your guests will miss this wall material, and everyone's admiration will be a pleasant surprise for you.

How to choose?

When choosing fabric products, you need to familiarize yourself with the quality characteristics of the materials and the purpose of the premises where they will be used.

So, products made of felt and velor are best purchased for bedrooms, as they accumulate dust and all kinds of odors and are not suitable for the kitchen.

In the kitchen, washable fabric-based wallpaper or special wallpaper that looks like fabric only externally will look great. For children, self-adhesive wall coverings are often used in rolls on a fabric basis for walls, since they can easily be changed in case of damage.

If you need wallpaper for the ceiling, then high quality textile wallpaper is perfect for this purpose. The advantages of their operation are very significant. Thanks to the texture, the joints of the canvases will be almost invisible. Textile wallpaper on the ceiling can add a special charm to any room, but you need to choose them only for "clean" rooms, as they get dirty easily.

Care

In order for the wallpaper to retain its stylish appearance longer, it is necessary to properly care for them:

  • Clean frequently with a vacuum cleaner or soft brush;
  • After pasting, treat the wallpaper with a special antistatic impregnation;
  • When new stains appear, you need to wet them with a solution of water and soap, without pressing on the surface and drying the product with a regular sheet of paper.

Textiles can transform the look of any home. For a quality repair, you just need to choose the right look in accordance with the purpose of the space. If you follow the recommendations for care, these wallpapers will delight the owners of the house with their originality for a long time.

Stylish interiors

If you opt for velor wall coverings, the result is a finish that visually resembles an expensive fabric. Textile velor wallpaper looks soft, especially if the room has dim lighting.

Linen wall coverings in the bedroom look particularly comfortable and stylish, turning this place into a real area of quality relaxation.

Silk wallpaper can be successfully used for redesigning offices and bedrooms, living rooms and restaurant halls.
