The appearance of rats and mice in the garden and in country houses is by no means a rare occurrence. When the warm season ends, summer residents harvest fruits, fill their pantries with food supplies - it is at this time that uninvited guests appear at home. In summer, they usually have enough food on the street, and closer to the onset of winter, they try to find a warm place for themselves with a supply of food.

What attracts rodents?

Not everyone can immediately understand that rodents are in the country. But if this fact is discovered, the fight against them should be started as early as possible. Mice can be a real problem, they:

  • spoil the harvested vegetables and fruits - if particles of the skin of mice, their excrement or wool get into the products, then the risk of food poisoning and allergic diseases is high;
  • fleas enter the house with mice and rats, they become carriers of dangerous infections;
  • small pests gnaw through the wiring, this often causes a fire;
  • rodents leave a specific unpleasant smell everywhere.

And, finally, these rodents reproduce at a tremendous speed, so even a couple of mice that come in in the fall to warm up by the spring can become the head of a huge family.

What attracts mice and rats? It's simple: warmth and availability of food supply. Even if you take all the food for the winter, the mice will definitely find something to eat. These pests like everything that "lies" badly - old books, pieces of wallpaper and even carpets.

Effective control methods

The following signs indicate the appearance of uninvited guests at the dacha:

  • paths near outbuildings and walls of a country house;
  • specific holes in the cladding of the house or in the insulation layer;
  • damage to boxes and bags with cereals;
  • fully or partially gnawed crops stored in cellars;
  • the presence of droppings with a specific smell inside the building and next to it;
  • rustles and squeaks at night;
  • activity of dogs and cats - they often sniff and seem to track someone down.

When the owner of the country house has roughly determined who he is dealing with and how many invaders he needs to defeat, he can choose suitable means of exterminating rodents.

Special poisons

Poison is an effective way to get rid of rodents forever. There are many chemicals that can be cumulative or instant. The former gradually accumulate in the body of rodents, causing the failure of vital organs. The second cause instant death of the pest.

Drugs for killing mice and rats can take different forms.

  • Creams and gels - toxic substances disguised with attractants and flavorings.
  • Powders - are necessary for drawing up baits that attract uninvited guests to dinner from poisoned food.
  • Briquettes - usually have an attractive aroma for rodents and bright colors. Such toxins are usually left under baseboards, behind radiators, and in other hard-to-reach areas.
  • Liquid formulations - such poison is added to the drink, at the same time limiting the access of rodents to any alternative water sources.
  • Aerosols and sprays - these are the most humane ways of dealing with uninvited guests. These drugs cause the pest to vomit, forcing them to leave the chosen area.

The most effective drugs include "Rat Death", "Storm", "Nutcracker" - Brodifacum-based drugs. This substance causes choking and internal bleeding in the rodent. Death occurs a week after ingestion.

  • Zoocoumarin Neo - zoo, an anticoagulant of exceptional toxicity, has a mummifying property.
  • "3D-Ratsid", "Blockade", "Clean House" - funds with bromadiolone. They are even more toxic than all of the above.
  • "Rathindan", "Rottenant" - a composition of diphenacin. This is one of the most poisonous drugs, in the form of a powder, it can be dangerous not only for rats, but also for humans.
  • "Efa" - a group of drugs based on ethylphenacin. The maximum effect is obtained with prolonged use.
  • Tsunami, Ratol - funds of accumulative action. The working components of the tablets lead to disruption of the cardiovascular system of the rodent, death occurs after 7-10 days.

Important: when working with pesticides, you need to use personal safety equipment (clothes that cover your legs and hands, gloves, as well as a respirator and goggles).

Traps

Traps can be used to trap mice and rats.

  • Standard - traditional mouse traps. When a rodent hits, they instantly close and press down on the tail of the animal. Their efficiency does not exceed 50%. The most modern models are equipped with motion sensors - they give 100% results, but they are also much more expensive.
  • Bottle trap - a homemade mousetrap that you can make with your own hands. To make it, you need to take a 0.5 liter plastic bottle, grease the walls of the container with vegetable oil and place the bait on the bottom. A board or cardboard should be placed against the side so that the rodent can climb into the trap prepared for it. But he will no longer be able to get out of the trap, since the slippery walls will prevent this.
  • Adhesive - special glue for catching rodents. It is very simple to use: the agent is applied along the perimeter of the cardboard sheet, and the bait is placed in the center. The mouse will feel the treat, run to it - and immediately stick. She will not be able to get out of such a trap. To combat rats, it is advisable to install an additional burden on the cardboard.

How to get rid of folk remedies?

Not all dacha owners like industrial methods of dealing with small rodents. Chemicals are unsafe for humans and their pets, and mousetraps cause the most unpleasant emotions. That's why many summer residents prefer to fight mice using folk remedies.

Herbs

Our grandparents also scared away rats with pungent odor products.

Wood ash has an unpleasant odor for pests, and in addition, causes severe irritation on the rodent's paws. If the ash is scattered along the line of the main mouse paths, then the rodents will try to avoid such rooms.

Placing coniferous paws, wild rosemary and black currant branches in close proximity to minks, you can create a scented barrier that scares away uninvited guests.

Mice absolutely do not tolerate the aroma of plants such as wormwood and elderberry. To get rid of unpleasant neighbors, you need to spread rags soaked in essential oils throughout the room. Most likely, rats and mice will leave their homes rather quickly and will not appear near the house for at least 1.5-2 months.

A good effect is given by smoking mice with hot pepper. To do this, the pod is wrapped in paper, placed in a metal container and set on fire. To achieve the result, you need to keep the fumigation smell for 2-3 days. This method is often used to get mice and rats out of basements. A sulfur checker has a similar effect. After smoldering, the room should be kept closed for 1-2 days.

Mice do not like birch tar and Vishnevsky's ointment.To scare off rodents, you need to treat the lower part of the furniture, thresholds and baseboards with these compounds.

To create effective protection of the site from uninvited guests, kerosene-soaked sawdust can be spread around the perimeter.

In addition, it will not hurt to plant cilantro, peppermint, wormwood, black currant, black root or spurge along the fence.

Poisoned baits

Rodents can be poisoned with homemade products. Here are some effective recipes.

  • Sugar, flour and gypsum are mixed in a ratio of 1: 2: 6; instead of gypsum, you can take quicklime.
  • The wine cork is crumbled and fried in unrefined sunflower oil.
  • Combine 5 g of barium carbonate, 30 g of melted lard and 20 g of flour.
  • Mix the flour and putty taken in equal parts. You can add a little salt, sugar or sesame seeds for more effect.
  • Finely chopped foam rubber dipped in “scented” vegetable oil.

Similar baits are tossed to mice. They have a pleasant smell, so rodents eat them with great pleasure. Place a bowl of water nearby.

Once in the stomach of the pest, the mixture hardens, causes blockage of the digestive organs, and then begins to corrode the mucous membrane.

other methods

Traditional methods are good. But technology does not stand still. Most firms these days offer a wide range of repellents. They performed well in the confrontation with rats and mice. Their undoubted advantages include safety for people and pets (with the exception of hamsters, guinea pigs and other tame rodents). VThere are several main options for scarers.

Ultrasonic

They send impulses that cause disorientation in mice. The animals feel panic and in terror leave the territory where the signal is spreading. People do not perceive such hesitation. The main advantages of such devices include:

  1. environmental friendliness;
  2. the ability to use in continuous mode for a long time;
  3. destruction of flies, bedbugs and mosquitoes.

However, such devices have their own disadvantages:

  1. if there are upholstered furniture, textiles and paper products in the country, the effectiveness of the repeller will be reduced, since such objects have the property of absorbing ultrasound;
  2. Ultrasound pulses do not pass through walls, they only reflect, so the effect of the repeller is limited to one room.

The best devices in this series are Tornado, Typhoon, Grad, Chiston, Ecosniper, ElectroKot and Weitech.

Electromagnetic

To activate such devices, access to electrical wiring is required, which is why they can be used only for the duration of a person's permanent residence. In winter, when land owners move to city apartments, uncontrolled use of wiring is fraught with the threat of fire. Such scarers act on rodents in a similar way to ultrasound devices - they cause stress in them, forcing them to leave the place they like.

Among the advantages are:

  1. environmental friendliness;
  2. long-term continuous work;
  3. lack of absorption of wave radiation by upholstered furniture;
  4. extensive coverage area;
  5. destruction of all crawling insects.

The most efficient devices are considered to be Riddex Plus, EMR-21, Digital, "Band 3" and "Hawk 200".

Combined

Combined models that combine all the advantages of ultrasonic and electrical models will be the best choice. Despite the fact that the price of such devices is high, it more than compensates for all the costs with the speed of action and versatility.

Devices "Chiston-2", as well as Riddex Quad and Ultrasonic Rodent Repeller will help to ward off rats from the country house.

And, of course, natural biological weapons against mice - domestic animals - cannot be ignored.

  • First of all, these are cats. As practice shows, ordinary outbred yard animals without documents and regalia are most effective in hunting pests.
  • Ferrets - These nimble little animals can become a real nightmare for rats and mice. It should be borne in mind that if such animals easily find a common language with dogs and cats, then they are unlikely to get along with chickens. If you breed birds at your dacha, then you should immediately refuse an assistant in the person of a representative of the weasel family.
  • Hunting dogs are effective rat-catchers. The best results are given by dachshunds, certain breeds of terriers, fox terriers and the Prague ratter.

However, it is possible to use pets at the dacha in the fight against mice only in the warm season. Leaving pets unattended for the winter is tantamount to sending them to certain death. With the arrival of frost, you can create the appearance of their living in the house. To do this, you need to periodically sprinkle cat litter along the walls of the house of the house - mice smell it and prefer to stay away from such a house.

Rodent prevention

It may seem that humans do not have a single chance in the fight against rodents. In fact, it is not so difficult to destroy them. But, as they say, it is always easier to prevent a problem than to solve it. Therefore, special attention should be paid to preventive measures. To protect the house from the appearance of uninvited guests, you should maintain order in the country, namely:

  • do not leave tops and mulch on the site;
  • harvest in a timely manner;
  • do autumn digging of the earth to destroy the burrows of rodents;
  • close the ventilation hole in the country house, seal up all the cracks;
  • the remaining food must be placed in a sealed glass jar or plastic container with a tightly screwed lid.
