Solid wood is pure wood, without impurities. It is usually used to make furniture, floors, window sills, swings and other items. At the same time, both simple and more expensive valuable tree species are used in the work. The features of this material, the use of the array and its choice will be discussed today.

What it is?

Solid wood is considered to be a material made of wood in the form of a solid canvas. This category also includes untreated bars and boards. This is an environmentally friendly material of good quality; it contains no harmful components or impurities. This affects the price of the finished product, which differs markedly in cost from products made from simpler materials such as MDF or chipboard. Various production methods can be used. Products are made from a whole piece of wood, without using waste in the form of shavings or sawdust. They call the array in another way, for example, a product from a bar or from a natural tree.

Products made from natural wood are considered elite. They are of the highest quality, durability, and aesthetic appearance. Finding a solid piece of high quality wood without cracks or knots can be difficult at times.

The presence of such defects significantly affects the appearance of the finished product, which reduces the impression of the provided model.

The main stage of production is solid wood drying. Usually, manufacturers use a longer method - natural drying of raw materials. If the technology is violated, after a while, the tree may begin to crack, which will immediately affect the appearance of the product. The cost of goods includes not only the material itself. This takes into account the work with this material, its finishing, the use of accessories and other components.

In the manufacture of furniture, wood of non-noble species is often used, usually it is taken as a basis. At further stages, the base is tinted, as a result of which it outwardly begins to look like expensive.

What happens?

Choosing models from wood, many people prefer solid wood. This is quite natural, because such products have excellent external characteristics and have a beautiful texture.

The array can be subdivided into 2 categories:

  • solid;
  • glued.

In the event that the first option is not affordable, then you can consider models made of glued solid wood. The production of solid wood products is a rather laborious business. After processing a solid web, there are often material residues. If small pieces are used for sawdust, then larger pieces are suitable for glued wood. Pieces with defects in the form of cracks and knots are also suitable for the manufacture of glued fabric, or in another way - "eurobeam".

Products made from solid wood are the most durable. When choosing between the options presented, you should rely on your own desires, needs, opportunities.

In the glued linen, the content of glue is small, it is an order of magnitude less than in products made of cheap materials such as chipboard.

Whole

Solid wood products are always highly valued. This popularity is not accidental, given their qualities.

  • The one-piece board, devoid of adhesive components, has a high environmental friendliness and safety in use.
  • Furniture and other products made from this material are characterized by high performance characteristics, distinguished by their durability. Products are resistant to mechanical damage and environmental influences.
  • The processing of the array is carried out by specialists with special skills. This is explained by the high value of the material.

Considering that the processing of such material is a long and costly process, solid wood products are not often seen.

At the same time, the cost of the products is very high and it is often too expensive for those wishing to purchase such products.

Glued

A more affordable option is glued solid wood. The glued canvas looks like layers of wood treated with a gluing agent. Usually such layers are called lamellas. Products made from such material are less valuable, but still they are noticeably higher in quality than models from MDF or chipboard. If we talk about the appearance of ready-made products made of glued solid wood, then it will not differ much from a solid sheet. When gluing the lamellas, the directions of the fibers alternate along and across.

Glued solid is produced in the form of lamellar and spliced fabric, consisting of parts of different sizes. The gluing process is called splicing. One of the more durable options is a micro-spike, also called a mini-spike, mustache-splice, or simply a spike.

To increase the area of adhesion, the board or edge of the timber is milled in the form of teeth, providing strength.

According to woodworkers, the glued sheet has a higher resistance to drying out than a solid sheet. This also applies to the strength of these materials. An important role here is played by the species of wood selected for production. Products made of glued linen are more often less picky, they less often begin to crack and dry out.

If we compare the glued array with a solid sheet, then the first option is considered more durable. Multidirectional rock fibers help to achieve greater strength. The advantages of this option also include a lower price of finished products. At the same time, their disadvantage is the presence of adhesives, which affects the environmental friendliness of the product.

Often, for the sake of economy, manufacturers use cheaper, lower quality glue, which, as a rule, contains harmful components.

Tree species

Solid wood products can be made from soft and hard rocks. It is generally accepted that the harder the wood, the more expensive products from it will cost. Furniture and other items made from softwood are more likely to be damaged during use or during shipping or assembly.

Most often, birch, oak and beech, pine, and larch are used for the manufacture of furniture items.

  • Spruce.The softest is considered to be an array of spruce. This material is used for the manufacture of furniture. It is easy to work with such material, it sticks well and is cut well.

At the same time, the structure of this type is not very expressive, which affects the appearance of the products.

  • Pine, like other conifers, is used successfully for furniture making. This material has a pleasant golden texture that reflects light beautifully.
  • Birch. The birch massif has a fibrous structure. Such a canvas is perfectly complemented by various dyes, therefore it is often used for furniture in different shades. Birch is a durable material used to create cabinets and furniture. Karelian birch with a pinkish or white-yellow tint is more often used in the form of veneer, combined with other species.

The texture of Karelian birch is similar to marble, allowing you to create original products with an interesting design.

  • Items made of beech are very high quality and durable. The massif easily takes on shades when dyed, ranging from light to red-brown tones, imitating valuable species such as mahogany.
  • Oak is a valuable wood species with high durability. Oak products will last a very long time if all operational parameters are observed. It is a canvas with a beautiful texture with highlighted wood grains in yellow-brown tones.

The most solid and valuable are the massifs of mahogany or ebony, mahogany. This material is used to create exclusive interior items.

Which one is better to choose?

Choosing between solid and glued wood, it is difficult to give preference to one of them. Each of these options has its own advantages. Judging by the cost, the price of a solid block, of course, will be higher. This factor also plays an important role. The disadvantages of the first option, in addition to the price, are the high requirements for the storage and drying of such wood.

The disadvantages of glued linen are the lower prestige of such products, the dependence on how well the gluing was made, as well as the ecological component, which is at a lower level.

As for the choice of wood species, here you should take into account the characteristics of each species, its appearance, functionality, and also practicality. Recently, products from exotic varieties, for example, from Hevea, have become popular. Brazilian Hevea is an excellent option for making furniture.

The material has high strength, the wood does not rot, it is resistant to bugs and other pests.

This material has many advantages.

  • Environmental friendliness. It is distinguished by its complete safety for health. Given the natural origin of the material, there are no harmful components in its composition, which affects the environmental situation in the room.
  • The strength of the material. Hevea is classified as a hard variety. This is a tree with a dense structure, has a high density on a par with oak. That is why hevea is called the Malaysian oak. Due to the hardness of the rock, it is advisable to use it for the manufacture of carved decorations and furniture.
  • Practicality. The birthplace of Hevea is Brazil. The tree grows in a humid climate, it is resistant to moisture. That is why hevea is used as a material for the manufacture of kitchen sets, furniture in the bathroom, and a bathroom.
  • Hevea contains rubber, so products made from it are durable. Furniture made of this material will last much longer and will not dry out, which indicates the durability of the material.

The price for Hevea products is slightly lower than for other varieties of trees. This can be explained by the rapid growth of these plants. After 5 years, they start giving rubber. After 15-20 years, when the amount of rubber is noticeably reduced, trees are cut down and sent to furniture factories. If we compare the Hevea with an oak, then it grows on average for 50 years, while the Malaysian oak grows for about 20 years.

Where is it used?

Solid wood is more often used for the manufacture of furniture. In this case, only clean wood that does not have defects is taken. Furniture made of this material is considered elite and quite expensive.

This can be a bedroom set, furniture for the kitchen or hallway. A bedroom made of this material looks very rich. This room is one of the most frequently visited places where residents spend a lot of time. That is why the furniture in the bedroom should be comfortable and functional. Wooden furniture is just the most acceptable option for a bedroom, given the environmental friendliness of the material, its reliability and beauty.

An important item in the bedroom is the bed. There are many models made of solid wood. These include classic models of a standard shape, and carvings with patterns, beds with a headboard or canopy.

Many offices and living rooms are furnished with luxurious furniture made from natural wood. An interesting addition to it will be parquet and ceilings made in the same color scheme.A wooden window sill, massive floors and interior partitions will organically fit into the interior.

The production of wall panels is one of the interesting options for using solid or glued wood. Elite stairs and columns look very beautiful from this material.

The material is also suitable for the manufacture of other items. It can be:

  • banquets,
  • watch;
  • Garden swing;
  • showcase;
  • curbstone;
  • handrails;
  • steps;
  • chests.

The material is used not only for large items in the form of furniture, but also as a decor. So, for example, a mirror in a massive wooden frame and decorative slats in the frame will perfectly fit into an interior decorated in a classic style. A wooden bread box will look organic in a Provence-style, rustic-style kitchen.

When choosing interior items made of wood, it is important to be able to distinguish the more expensive material from the cheaper one in order to understand how the price corresponds to a given product. You should take a closer look at how the connection was made. The cheapest option is to use glue or staple joints. Interlock couplings with a toothed structure can also be used.

It is enough to find out what breed the product is made of, consider the cut structure, its appearance, and deal with scratch resistance. To get a more durable furniture frame will allow the use of oak. When choosing a pine, it is desirable that the bearing elements have a thickness of more than 30 mm.

They also pay attention to the beauty of the pattern, the smoothness of the lines and their naturalness.
