Overhaul of the kitchen is not budgetary, but sometimes there is not enough money for it, and then it seems appropriate to do it cheaply and beautifully at the same time, without doing a global restoration of communications. A simple and economical option in a not too old apartment is usually possible, albeit in a somewhat limited framework.

Pros and cons

Almost any repair involving changes in the configuration of communications is considered to be cosmetic, and it is he who, due to the lower complexity of the work, is considered cheaper. This approach has its own advantages:

  • simpler work and fewer consumables significantly reduce costs, and our goal is to save money;
  • the design of the room is changing, bringing the aesthetic effect of the repair carried out, along the way, you can improve the room somewhat in terms of comfortable use;
  • the simplicity of the work performed leaves opportunities to do without the involvement of expensive specialists, having done all the work with your own hands;
  • the absence of complex tasks usually has a positive effect on the speed of execution, therefore, it is often possible to do without moving from the apartment.

Redecoration is good from all sides, but there are still a couple of drawbacks. Firstly, with a small budget, it is simply not possible to make global changes to the same layout, therefore usually only the appearance of the kitchen changes, but not its essence.

Secondly, sometimes it is more important to repair the communications, which, with severe wear and tear, can cause a serious accident, and such operations usually do not fit into the concept of cheap repairs.

Possibilities for savings

It is no secret that any type of work can cost both relative pennies and huge sums - it all depends not only on the scope, but also on the way of organizing the work. If you don't want to spend a lot, you can significantly save on several points without losing the quality of the result.

Each of the points, as a rule, gives only a relatively small savings, but no one bothers to combine several ways of saving so that the percentage of benefits increases greatly.

  • Repair is impossible without tools, however, even if they are not there, it does not always make sense to buy them. Usually, by acquaintances, you can gather enough tools for simple cosmetic repairs, and if something is missing, then it is easier to buy what is missing than the whole set.
  • Hired workers can make turnkey repairs without your participation at all, but for economy it is highly desirable. At least you can dismantle the old finish and remove the garbage yourself or with the help of loved ones, and the same painting or wallpapering is a task that does not require special skills. In practice, light repairs are possible without any professional intervention at all.
  • A brand is always quality, but the difference in price is usually much more significant than the difference in quality. You should not certainly choose the cheapest materials, but it is also inappropriate to overpay for them - it is enough to abandon imports in favor of domestic producers.
  • Some furnishings can not be changed, but repaired - it will come out cheaper. For example, the same kitchen set can be painted to restore its appearance.
  • You can save on finishing materials by connecting elementary logic.Patterned tiles and wallpapers involve pattern matching, which results in more waste and therefore increases material costs. Monochrome finishes, even if they seem to be the same for the price, always cost a little less..
  • It is always recommended to take materials with a margin, but almost always this stock remains "for memory". Rejecting such a stock completely or greatly reducing it, you significantly run the risk of incomplete repairs, however with accurate measurement of all parameters and accurate work execution, this approach can save up to 15% of the budget.

In the case of cosmetic repairs, you can save on almost everything - those things on which savings are unacceptable usually belong to the sphere of capital restoration. The only thing to remember is that all the surfaces to be trimmed must be perfectly flat, otherwise the cheap finishing will fall on them badly and will not last long.

Principles of budget finishing

The concept of cosmetic repairs usually does not imply even a minimal redevelopment - the owners are limited to budget solutions to update the appearance. The desire to save even on this leads to the growing popularity of minimalist styles, for example, loft or Scandinavian. The minimum of unnecessary details is also emphasized by the choice of finishes, focusing on the simplest and most inexpensive option, suitable for use in a kitchen.

For the floor, linoleum seems to be the best budget solution. This is not the most ideal option in general, but it is extremely cheap, durable and stable, and does not require special care, and you can even lay it on your own.

At the same time, it is necessary to handle such a coating rather carefully; it is undesirable to lay it on an uneven base. Although there are material options for every taste and wallet, the cheapest are still not worth taking - they are simply not intended for the kitchen.

With a ceiling, there are much more budget options. Previously, it was customary to whitewash it with chalk or slaked lime, and this is still the cheapest option, worth a mere trifle. It does not always look like the height of aesthetics, such a repair is short-lived and it is impossible to maintain cleanliness on it, but you can update it at any time.

A slightly improved solution is water-based paint, which is already slightly more resistant to the harsh conditions of the kitchen and can be washed. You can also find an option using wallpaper, but it is quite difficult to glue them on the ceiling yourself, and any flooding will destroy such a finish.

For walls, the abundance of options is also wide. One of the top options is wallpaper, but objectively for the kitchen, you cannot choose the cheapest paper solutions, and suitable vinyl solutions can be quite expensive.

It is much cheaper and easier to use acrylic paint for wall decoration, which is stable and easy to maintain, but to choose this option you need to have perfectly flat walls, otherwise the cost, along with leveling, will increase many times over.

With an apron, the situation is a little more complicated - although these are the same walls, the impact of harmful factors is much more intense here. The cheapest solution is PVC film. Although it is considered, rather, a temporary solution to the problem, no one bothers you to simply regularly change the design of the apron. PVC panels are already an order of magnitude better and more durable solution, however, it should be borne in mind that damage to the finish can even be done by accidentally grazing it.

In terms of strength, MDF panels will already be much better, which are still an inexpensive solution, but they are criticized for being flammable - such a material cannot be used too close to a gas stove.

Examples of

The first photo is a vivid and comprehensive example of the fact that it is quite possible to carry out kitchen repairs for very modest money. Here, the implementation of several tips from among those given above is clearly shown.So, for finishing the apron, a single-color tile was chosen (perhaps it was not even changed), which does not require adjusting the pattern and does not involve a large amount of waste.

All the walls are painted, and although there is most likely drywall underneath, the decoration itself was inexpensive and could be done independently. The kitchen unit looks out of date, but it is well preserved, which suggests that it was just very neatly tinted.

The lack of brightness, caused mainly by the white finish, the owners decided to compensate for with bright colorful linoleum, as well as several accessories that are inexpensive, but add colors to the palette.

The second example proves that wallpaper on the ceiling is not such a dubious idea, especially if you approach it with due responsibility and a certain imagination. In general, the kitchen shown in the photo does not look like a model of economy, here even with the space everything is in order, because we see only the dining area, but the fact is that the owners saved on finishing the ceiling, preferring wallpaper to everything else, and it turned out quite brightly and nontrivial.

If the designer has a taste, and even did not economize with all his might, you can try to create a rather attractive design. In the third example, we see an inexpensive apron assembled from MDF boards. The stove next to it seems to be electric, so the likelihood of a fire is greatly reduced. The material is in good harmony with the kitchen set, because the image of the kitchen looks even a little more expensive than it actually is.
