Traditional Japanese-style bedrooms are austere and minimalist, lacking bright accessories and decorative elements. The focus of these bedrooms is on the low and wide bed, which can often be the only piece of furniture in the bedroom.

Peculiarities

Tatami is a traditional Japanese bed, consisting of a base of a strict and simple shape, as well as a very hard mattress - a futon, which itself can be used as a full-fledged sleeping place. The main feature in such a bed is its low location above the floor level. In the classic version, the tatami is made only from natural tree species or from bamboo.

The design completely lacks decorative elements, a real Japanese bed is the natural color of wood, simplicity and severity of lines. Modern bed models that imitate tatami are a very wide frame, the edges of which usually protrude beyond the mattress.

The bed frame is supported by sturdy squat legs, usually four. The exception is large beds, in which an additional leg is attached in the middle - to give the piece of furniture increased stability. All legs are specially displaced towards the center of the bed - this allows for the effect of hovering above the floor.

At the present time, modern models without legs, equipped with boxes for storing bed linen, are becoming fashionable.

The distinctive features of Japanese-style beds include the following:

  • natural wood frame;
  • low location of the mattress, almost at the very floor;
  • clear geometric shapes, with straight lines and angles;
  • complete lack of decor and ornaments;
  • straight and low backs, headboards in the shape of a rectangle;
  • thick legs, in models without legs - the presence of built-in boxes for linen (along the entire perimeter);
  • lack of metal and plastic parts.

In some models, the headboard may be absent, in this case the bed is usually equipped with a soft roller and trimmed with soft fabric - along the entire perimeter of the frame structure.

Advantages and disadvantages

Due to its laconicism and correct forms, the Japanese-style bed will harmoniously fit into almost any modern interior, this can be attributed to one of the main advantages of tatami mat. The indisputable advantages of a Japanese bed can also be attributed to its stability and the special strength of the frame. The bed will be reliable regardless of the size of the bed.

Manufacturers offer single, one-and-a-half and double models, but the most common and comfortable bed size is 160 × 200 cm.

If the area of the room allows, then it is better to give preference to this particular option.

The advantages include a wide, flat surface, which most often (in accordance with the needs of a modern person) is equipped with a comfortable orthopedic mattress instead of the traditional Japanese futon.

Many manufacturers offer models of low double beds that do not have legs. The design of such a bed is much more stable, but the big disadvantage of such models will be significant inconvenience when cleaning.

A heavy bed will have to be constantly pushed aside in order to carry out wet cleaning under it. This can damage the floor in the room and will require a lot of physical exertion from you.

If you are also allergic to everything else, you need daily wet cleaning in the room, then it is better to refuse this option.

Color solution

To recreate a true Japanese style in your bedroom, you can't just buy a matching bed. There are many subtleties that you need to know when creating the desired atmosphere in a room. The absolute harmony of natural wood and muted colors is one of the most important rules that the design of the bed and the room as a whole must comply with.

Japanese-style design does not allow bright colors and shades that are far from natural. As a rule, the design is based on black, white and brown colors. They can be complemented by muted shades of other natural colors.

Remember that the Japanese style requires strict restraint and conciseness, so when decorating a bedroom, you should not use more than three or four colors. Moreover, their combination must be flawless.

Choosing a bedspread for a Japanese bed is not an easy task. By tradition, tatami mats are covered with several different-textured bedspreads, which also differ in shape and size.

Japanese bedspreads do not have flowing folds and frills - unlike European ones. Bedspreads should be made only of natural materials, preferably plain or with a barely noticeable pattern. When choosing bed linen, you should adhere to the same rules. It is very good if these are plain products made from natural materials. It can be 100% cotton or silk.

Interior

The main rule when decorating a Japanese-style bedroom is not to overload it with decor. Strict restraint in everything is the motto of this style. If other furniture is provided in the room, it must be matched to the tatami.

All furniture should be low. The use of tall cabinets or mirrors is unacceptable, as this will destroy the atmosphere of your chosen style.

Small benches, tables and nightstands are suitable for such a bedroom. Remember that the Japanese-style wide bed should remain the main piece of furniture. It is impossible to clutter up the room with useless things and trinkets.

If the walls and floor of the room are decorated in light pastel colors, then the ideal solution would be to choose contrasting furniture made of dark wood. If the bedroom has dark walls and floors, then it is better to choose furniture from light-colored wood.

If you cannot do without accessories for such a room, then use them to a minimum. The presence of luxury goods, art and antiques, and decorative items is not an option for Japanese style. Its basis is functionality and restraint.

Be careful with the choice of textiles. It should be discreet and consistent with a single design direction. The windows can be hung with silk curtains or traditional Japanese straw curtains.
