What do you hear when you say the word "loft"? Brevity, some arrogance and simplicity at the same time. And having learned that this word is translated as "attic", we imagine a neglected empty space, finished with untreated brick, with wooden or metal ceilings and supports, reminiscent of the industrial past.

Indeed, this style appeared 80 years ago in the United States, when plant owners and manufacturers closed their factories due to the financial crisis. The vacated factory lofts soon began to be occupied by a creative intelligentsia with a great flight of imagination and an empty wallet.

Today this style can be found more and more often in the interiors of apartments and private houses. How to decorate modern furniture in this style, in particular a bed?

Peculiarities

  • The first feature of the loft style was the used only natural materials - solid wood, metal, brick, glass, stone in the design of the room as a whole and the bed, including.
  • The second is minimum partitions... The bed and bathroom can be within walking distance of each other. But at the same time, the "loft" loves multi-level placement. A staircase often leads to the sleeping place.
  • Third - simplicity, minimum of things, lack of pretentious decoration. The mattress can lie on pallets, which will also serve as drawers for shoes or clothes. A certain carelessness in the design will make the solid pine bed an accent that attracts attention.
  • Fourth - convenience and comfort... This style will allow any setting of the bed: on a solid wooden base, on a metal frame, on a hanging cradle, the main thing is that the mattress is comfortable, the light illuminates the required space, and there is a soft carpet by the bed.
  • Fifth - when decorating the bed and the room as a whole, they are used natural colors: brick, shades of yellow, green, dark blue, gray, black and white.
  • Sixth - do not try to hide pipes, supports, ceilings... This is the special chic of this style. Metal elements will be the rationale for your metal bed frame.
  • Seventh - in the room of a brutal bachelor or people who love freedom, allow yourself to misbehave: add one item that does not match the created image. Place an orange toy heart-shaped piece on the bed covered with a black-and-brick Scottish rug. This single element will make your guests look at you in a new way. But only one element and only matching colors.

Dimensions (edit)

Depending on its size, the bed can be single or double.

  • 80-100 cm is the size of a single mattress. But different manufacturers make products with their own scale.
  • Mattresses with a width of 140-160 cm are considered to be double mattresses.The models differ in length as follows: a length of 160 cm is suitable for preschoolers, 190 cm for adolescents, and over 190 cm for adults.

Locations

By location, a sleeping place in a loft room can be:

  • on the podium, which is made of metal structures, solid wood or pallets (pallets);
  • in a niche - the bed can be fully or partially hidden by a screen or false panels, or simply stand in the recess of the wall;
  • in the attic - to save space in a small room or original design, the bed can be placed in the second tier, which can be climbed by stairs;
  • in the centerbeing the main element of the decor;
  • under the ceiling on the lift.

Frame constructions

According to the loft frame design, the bed can be:

  • on legs, while wooden bases look like a homely, warm option, and metal legs tend to be minimal;
  • bunk (attic) - most often used in children's rooms; as the first tier, both a bed and a desk, a wardrobe or a play area (a bed with a house) can act;
  • sofa - suitable for small spaces or when combining kitchen and bedroom;
  • platform - it is a metal or wooden frame, which can be open or draped with leather, fur, fabric;
  • mobile - such a model can be made independently from pallets and furniture wheels, it can easily move around the room if necessary (for example, during cleaning);
  • floating - the bed is attached to the ceiling with four ropes and creates a complete immersion in the sea atmosphere, light pallets will perfectly cope with the function of the frame;
  • closet - the bed is higher than the usual one, because there are drawers for things under it;
  • pallets stacked on top of each other, will allow you to place a mattress on top, and from the sides it will be convenient shelves for things, shoes or books;
  • soaring - this is an extraordinary solution that will make your attic cozy and mysterious: install one or several legs in the center under the platform so that they cannot be seen from the sides, install decorative lighting from below and enjoy the effect produced;
  • retractable - the bed is installed on castors and is located under the main bed of medium height, it is used as an additional bed;
  • under the ceiling - a technically more difficult option, since during sleep it is lowered to the floor with the help of mechanical or electrical devices, at other times it rises to the ceiling;
  • podium - these are, for example, powerful wooden beams, fastened into a single monolith, which can be much larger than a mattress and place night lamps, books, glasses on themselves, that is, play the role of a bedside table.

Headboard types

The headboard can be in a classic version or an unexpected design find.

You have a podium - then take a piece of a curved board with a width of a pedestal and a height of 50-100 cm. Whether to cover it with varnish or leave it in its natural color depends on the surrounding entourage. Nail it to the wall and your headboard is ready. If the frame is covered with leather or fabric, make the same headboard.

Vertical slats of different or the same height, different or the same species of trees, knocked into a single canvas or with gaps - this is just your individual decoration of the sleeping place. Photo frames can be made from the same slats or a solid piece of wood. Often black and white photos are hung over such a bed, but this is not necessary.

A natural headboard can be an untreated brick wall or roughly finished with stone. One such wall is enough for a hint of style.

If the bed is made of a metal frame, then a metal headboard would be a justified solution: tubes with the simplest bends, a rectangular sheet with imitation of rivets or patches.

Like the entire structure, the headboard can be artificially aged, scratched, and peeled off the paint. This is completely in line with our style. To give the atmosphere of antiquity, drawings, inscriptions, symbols, symbolizing the 40s of the twentieth century, can be applied to the headboard.

Registration

Another element of the loft-style bed is the canopy. Since the use of curtains was not practiced in the attic living quarters, the creative bohemia, leading a nocturnal lifestyle, tried to hide from the early morning sun behind a canopy. Depending on the location of the bed, this canopy could be made of dense coarse fabric or lightweight textiles. The loft bed can be fully curtained with a mini curtain to create a private space.

It is customary to cover the bed itself with a single-colored metallic fabric, if such is present in the decoration or furniture. A tartan plaid or soft tanned animal hide will adorn the wood-framed bed.

Bed linen and a bedspread in a large bright floral print can look unusual, but interesting. This is the only accent that this style can afford. Place several pillows in a contrasting color and texture on the sofa bed.

Don't forget the bedside rug. It can be a discreet product with a short nap. Or knitted colored rugs throughout the room as in a country house, imitation or natural animal skin.

How to do it yourself?

If the whole entourage presupposes a certain rudeness and unpretentiousness of materials and finishes, then why not try to make your own loft-style bed yourself.

The simplest option would be a pallet frame, which we have already mentioned several times today. Their advantage lies in ease of transportation to home, a minimum of building material and ease of assembly.

For manufacturing, we need separate wooden slats of a given length or ready-made pallets (pallets) from the construction market, a hammer, nails, sandpaper for processing the front slats, varnish or paint, and a brush. Operating procedure:

  1. Sand the slats, cover with linseed oil (primer), paint with varnish or paint.
  2. Put together the pallets (their number depends on the size of the bed).
  3. Decorate the headboard according to any of the options described above.
  4. Put on your mattress and bedding.
  5. Use the side openings of the pallets as crates.
  6. Make bedside tables from slats or whole pallets.
  7. Do not forget about lamps: wall or floor.

A more physically challenging option is a bed made of wooden beams. All that is needed is to lift a few pieces of logs to the attic. The beam has a square shape, so it must be firmly placed in the place of the intended bed and fastened with a wooden strip or metal staples. The simplest metal frame will require welding or bolt holes. You can do it, but it's better outside the home.

Yes, this relatively young style gives us so many great ideas. He makes us create, dream and be free in our thoughts.

It would seem that a bed is made of logs, but today it is elite furniture. Falling asleep on such a bed, you will feel like a winner. Climbing onto the floating bed, you will feel like a magician. Climbing stairs or artificial rock to the loft bed will be a rock climber.

And all this thanks to such an unpredictable and varied loft style.
