Multifunctional and comfortable things that do not take up extra space are becoming more and more in demand. In many ways, this applies to furniture that a person needs for a comfortable life and maintaining the health of his body. Chair-beds with orthopedic mattresses are suitable for most people in all respects, showing a compromise between convenience and size.

Advantages and disadvantages

A folding chair-bed with an orthopedic mattress has long established itself among consumers. Such furniture owes its popularity to a number of significant advantages.

  • Convenient in placement and transportation. A folding chair-bed with an orthopedic mattress takes up much less space than conventional bulky furniture and is much easier to transport. Thanks to the folding mechanism, it can be easily reduced in size.
  • Multifunctionality. Chair-beds can be easily converted into a sitting place or a recumbent one, depending on the needs of the owner.
  • Convenience and benefits. This furniture is not inferior to ordinary beds in comfort, and the orthopedic mattress and lamellar base ensure the correct position of the spine during sleep.
  • Optimal for all ages. Chair-beds are suitable for both children and adults and the elderly.

In addition to the pros, chair beds have several disadvantages that you should definitely take into account before buying.

  • Price. Prices for such furniture are quite high, which is due to the manufacturer's costs for high-quality raw materials for the transformation mechanism, and the orthopedic mattress itself is not so cheap.
  • Narrow bed. The standard width is only 60 cm, which may not suit every user.
  • Inconvenience with changing position during sleep. Some models have armrests that cannot be moved. They can cause discomfort during rest, which can affect sleep quality.

Varieties

The main feature of the chair-bed is the ability to quickly transform from chair to bed and vice versa. The chair position is suitable for daily use when you need a comfortable seating position in the room. If this chair bed also serves as the main place to sleep, it is laid out.

Sometimes such furniture is used as an extra bed, in case of the arrival of guests who need to spend the night somewhere.

Materials (edit)

Upholstery

The first thing people pay attention to when they see any upholstered furniture, including an armchair-bed, is the upholstery. It can be made from different materials, each of which has its own characteristics.

  • Leather - stylish material with good durability. Easy to clean, durable, pleasant to the touch and does not accumulate dust. However, it is quite expensive and sensitive to light and temperature extremes.
  • Eco leather - an artificial analogue of natural leather, which is cheaper and almost identical in most parameters. It is also pleasant to tactile sensations, not so capricious to light and humidity. It does not have a specific smell of natural leather.
  • Velours - a spectacular material with good strength and elasticity. It is unpretentious in maintenance and retains its properties for a long time.
  • Flock - very easy to clean while maintaining color saturation. Practical for large families. Has refractory characteristics.
  • Jacquard - durable fabric, resistant to sunlight, which is indispensable for some regions.
  • Microfiber - stylish material that is easily air-permeable and has high strength characteristics.
  • Mat - durable and resistant fabric. It keeps its shape well even after several years of active use.
  • Boucle - an inexpensive and decorative option with a dense structure.

Filler

Orthopedic mattresses need a suitable filling, to provide the user with the maximum degree of comfort and quality of rest.

  • Polyurethane foam is an elastic and durable hypoallergenic material that forms the basis of most mattresses. Good air permeability and quickly returns to its original shape. Poorly tolerates sun exposure and is vulnerable to fire, which releases dangerous toxins.

Due to its softness, it can cause spinal problems.

  • Latex - soft, elastic and pliable material. Due to its properties, it quickly takes the shape of the body. It is breathable and non-toxic. It keeps its shape for a very long time and evenly distributes the load. May deteriorate from exposure to grease or UV rays. Due to the specifics of the production, it is quite expensive.
  • Coir - tough natural material. It has excellent orthopedic properties as well as good elasticity and deformation resistance. Good air permeability, not prone to decay and the development of microorganisms. Due to the costly production process, coconut fibers have a rather high price compared to other fillers.

Modern options provide the spine with full support. When sleeping on such mattresses, muscles quickly relax, which allows a person to fall asleep quickly. And upon awakening, the user feels completely rested and replenished.

Mattresses have different designs, but they all belong to one of two types of arrangement of spring blocks: independent and dependent. In new models, mattresses of the first type are most often found. Such products do not buckle longer, since each spring is separated from the others, which allows you to maintain elasticity for years to come. Dependent spring blocks are more commonly seen in legacy versions where the frame is a single unit.

It is clear that at the first drawdowns such mattresses will have to be changed.

Frame

The frame carries out the function of supporting the entire structure. The stability of the product, its service life and comfort of use depend on it. The quality of the frame depends on the manufacturing technology and the literacy of its execution, as well as the materials from which the products were made.

  • Wood. The wooden base is constructed from slats up to 5 cm thick. Such structures are durable and easy to transport, but rather inconvenient to repair.
  • Metal. The structure of metal pipes is much stronger than wood. The special powder used to cover the metal frame ensures a long service life of the product and its durability.
  • Combined option. Golden mean. Wooden bars on a metal frame are a compromise between reliability and ease of movement.

Mechanisms

The type of mechanism depends on: appearance, method of unfolding, whether there will be furniture with a box for linen, whether there are additional sections there.

  • "Accordion" - the seat moves forward, exchanging position with the back. A comfortable reclining place without gaps is formed.
  • "Dolphin" - mechanism with an additional section. The seat is pulled back, from under which one more part is rolled out. When it is level with the seat, the place to sleep is ready.
  • Draw-out mechanism - the bottom element is pulled out. The seat element is pulled onto the resulting folding base. As a result, a bed is formed. It is quite low, so it may not be suitable for tall people or the elderly.
  • "Cot" - the lamellar frame of the product opens when the back and seat are folded. Inside there is a section that forms the missing part of the recumbent.
  • "Eurobook" - the seat rises and stretches towards the user. Then an additional section comes out, which will become the center of the sleeping place.
  • "Click-clack" - consists of 4 elements: seat, backrest and two armrests. The latter go down, the back too - as a result, you get a place to sleep.

How to choose?

The choice of a chair-bed depends not only on the quality and characteristics of each individual product, but also on the individual needs of the buyer.

First of all, it is necessary to take into account the health factor. Before buying, it is advisable to undergo a spinal examination and find out from the doctor which chair-bed is suitable for back support.

It is important to understand the length and width of the mattress so that it exactly matches the parameters of the person. The materials must be suitable for both family members (to avoid allergic reactions) and for the location in the room (in the shade or sunlight).

If a sleeping place is chosen for a child, then you must definitely choose the right orthopedic mattress, which will not allow deformation of the child's spine. It is advisable that the crib has armrests that will prevent the child from falling down while sleeping.
