The air conditioner takes its rightful place in everyday life along with such appliances as a washing machine, a dishwasher, a microwave oven. It is difficult to imagine modern houses and apartments without climatic equipment. And if there is also a summer cottage or a workshop with a garage, then the cost of purchasing such devices doubles, so craftsmen make cooling structures from inexpensive devices.

How does a conventional air conditioner work?

To understand how to make a home-made climate device, you need to know about the principles of a traditional air conditioner. Modern household appliances for normalizing the room temperature consist of the following main elements:

  • two radiators located inside and outside, which serve as a heat exchanger;
  • copper pipes for connecting radiators;
  • refrigerant (freon);
  • compressor;
  • expansion valve.

The functioning of the climatic device is based on the principle of freon operation: the refrigerant evaporates in one radiator, and turns into condensate in the other. This process is closed. In homemade air conditioners, the result is achieved by circulating air.

Factory samples are quite complex devices, because in order to assemble them at home, you need technical knowledge in this area. An ordinary user will be able to use applied designs that are easy to assemble.

In small rooms, they can cope with air cooling.

Pros and cons of homemade appliances

A DIY device should be useful, economical and safe. Below are the advantages and disadvantages of homemade designs.

The pluses include:

  • air circulation and achieving the desired result;
  • a minimum of materials and improvised means for manufacturing;
  • low cost of devices;
  • simple assembly and quick troubleshooting in case of breakdown.

Minuses:

  • limited service life;
  • for most device options to function, there must be an inexhaustible supply of ice at hand;
  • low power - one design is enough only for a small area;
  • overspending of electricity is possible;
  • high humidity.

The main advantage of home-made refrigeration equipment is its low cost. Most of the components you need can be found in your closet or in your own workshop. But you need to understand that the refrigeration capacity of home-made air conditioners is not as high as that of factory options.

Hand-made devices are suitable for a summer residence, a garage, and other small rooms in which people stay temporary and where it is pointless to install a split system.

How to make it yourself?

The simplest ways to cool a room have been known for a long time. For example, you can take a damp sheet and curtain an open window with it in hot weather... This "cooling system" is triggered when there is a draft. Small hand-made air conditioners function according to the same principle.

Models of self-made installations cannot compete with factory samples, but they can help out at certain times and under specific conditions. If at some point in time such a device turns out to be unnecessary or ineffective, then it will not be difficult to assemble it and fold it into a box. Below are several options for such devices.

From the fan

At home, several structures can be built from a fan. One of them will require the following components:

  • canister or bottle of 5 liters made of plastic with a closing cap;
  • several screws and a screwdriver (screwdriver);
  • a computer fan with working blades, the diameter of which must be at least 12 cm;
  • ice cubes.

The container with ice is attached to the grill of the ventilation device, the home-made air conditioner is turned on in the outlet, resulting in cool air. The more ice, the stronger the effect. Only a damp sheet in a draft can be simpler than this design. As a container for frozen water, in addition to a plastic bottle, a cooler bag with cold accumulators is suitable.

    Another popular applied device is the fan design with copper pipes and water. Such a cooler will change the air in the room by an average of 6 degrees in 30 minutes of operation. For this option, the following components are required:

    • fan in a protective grill;
    • 10 m of copper tube with a section of 6.35 mm;
    • clamps (plastic and metal);
    • battery for generating cold;
    • heat-resistant box;
    • submersible pump (preferably an aquarium, which has a capacity of 1 thousand liters per hour);
    • plastic hose with an inner diameter of 6 mm.

    The main unit - cold accumulators - can be flat containers with a water-salt solution, gel or other component that can freeze quickly. It is these containers that serve as the basis in cooler bags, thermal boxes of cars and in other similar products designed to maintain the desired temperature regime.

    For this model of homemade air conditioner, silicone is suitable as a battery filler. With good thermal insulation of the container, it will keep the temperature from 0 to +2 degrees for a week. If no container is available, a rectangular bucket can be used. To strengthen the insulation of its walls, the cover is treated with expanded polystyrene from the inside and outside.

    The grille is removed from the fan and a copper tube is fixed to it (the ends of the tubes remain free) in the form of turns, this is done using plastic clamps. The mechanism is reattached to the fan, while the ends of the tubes are directed to the water tank. You need to take two transparent hoses and put them on the copper ends. One hose connects to the pump nozzle, the other is placed in a container with ice water. All this is done through holes drilled in the lid of the thermo box.

    It remains to include a fan with a pump in the network. With proper assembly, you can observe the free circulation of water, which will provide coolness.

    From the old fridge

    Having made an air conditioner from the refrigerator with your own hands, you can solve several problems at once: get rid of old equipment, save money on buying a new device, cool down in hot weather. The job will take only two hours. If you do not have your own refrigerator, you can take the unit from friends or find it via the Internet.

    To alter it, you will need tools, which must be taken care of in advance. For example, using a household jigsaw, you can easily rid the body of the refrigerator from metal fragments. An air conditioner from an old refrigerator will work if its main mechanisms remain in working order. These are the radiator, condenser and compressor.

    The design can be easily assembled by refrigerators, and for novice craftsmen, detailed instructions on how to do this are presented below.

    The following procedure must be followed:

    • the doors are removed in the refrigerator to provide access to the freezer;
    • a small fan is placed in the freezer;
    • the bottom in the main chamber is drilled on the sides, the holes should be small: 1.5 cm in diameter;
    • an old refrigerator with a fan is placed instead of doors in the right room and is connected to the network;
    • for greater efficiency, the gaps between the doorway and the unit are covered with foil.

    The exact same cooling effect can be achieved by installing a freezer with a fan in the window and carefully insulating the opening. With the help of such a simple design, you can keep the room cool for a long time, even on the hottest day. However, for cooling large areas, such a homemade device is unlikely to work.

    From bottles

    For the next room construction, no ice, no water, no electricity is needed - just take a few plastic bottles and a piece of plywood. The homemade device will work from a draft.

    1. It is necessary to pick up a sheet of plywood under the window opening.
    2. From the plastic bottles, you need to leave the upper third part - the rest should be cut off. You need so many bottles that they cover all the plywood, but do not touch each other.
    3. The plugs are removed and left for fixing work. You need to cut off the top from them.
    4. With a pencil, you need to make marks for the holes and drill them. Hole diameter - 18 mm.
    5. The prepared parts of the bottles are attached with cork rings to the plywood.
    6. The finished home-made air conditioner is installed in the window frame with funnels on the street.

    Air passing through a narrow channel expands and enters the room cooled. With a good draft, the temperature will immediately drop by five degrees.

    It will not be difficult even for novice craftsmen to make such a structure.

    There are general rules for the use of all homemade air conditioners that must be followed in order to avoid harm to health and damage to property. To ensure that the device serves safely and does not cause unforeseen situations, it is enough to follow the recommendations below:

    • a home-made air conditioner does not need to be connected to the network through an extension cord - it needs a separate outlet;
    • during its operation, it is not recommended to use other household appliances;
    • the application device should not be allowed to work for a long time, and it is also not worth leaving it turned on when leaving home.

    A home-made air conditioner will help out those who cannot afford to buy a factory sample. It will become indispensable in places of temporary residence of people: in the country, in the garage, workshop, change house. It is only necessary to strictly follow the manufacturing methods and follow all the recommendations for use. A home-made design is, although a simple device, but it, like its factory counterpart, needs to create conditions for safe work.
