Brick tandoor, how realistic is it to make it with your own hands?

Tandoor is a traditional Uzbek oven. It is very different from the traditional Russian oven. That is why, for the successful construction of a tandoor, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the construction features of this outlandish device.

The traditional material for the manufacture of this kiln is clay, but fired red brick can be used as the base and outside, which can be of any size (the most common is brick 250x120x65 mm.). If you are very limited in finances, then you can use for construction backing brick.

The process of choosing a place for construction is also important. The design of the tandoor determines several important nuances: there should be no combustible materials within a radius of four meters; there should be a source of water nearby; there should be a high canopy over the stove.

Tandoors are by type:

  • vertical,
  • horizontal,
  • underground,
  • terrestrial.

In Asia, chan kilns are made of clay with the addition of camel or sheep wool. However, the process of creating a vat is very laborious and requires specific knowledge. Therefore, it is easier to buy a vat for this oven in a specialized store. But build the base and the outer wall yourself.

Regardless of the design, the tandoor consists of: a base, a foundation, an outer protective layer, a vat, a compartment for maintaining the temperature, a grate and a canopy.

Foundation

Due to the peculiarities of this furnace, it has a lot of weight, so you can't do without a foundation. The foundation should protrude slightly beyond the oven itself. It is best to make a ledge of 20-30 cm. You need to build the foundation on a sand cushion with a height of at least 20 cm.

Usually, for the construction of a tandoor, a solid foundation is made of about one meter, but not less than 60 cm.

For pouring the foundation of the tandoor, a cement-sand mixture is used. And for waterproofing, it is most advisable to use galvanized.

Construction

The outer protective layer is intended for thermal insulation of the oven. It is usually constructed from fired red bricks. You can also apply fireclay brick... But it doesn't look so pretty. However, this can also be corrected, because no one forbids processing over the chamate brick with heat-resistant plaster, and then decorating it with refractory decor.

The inner and outer diameters of the tandoor wall should be 80 and 90 cm thick, respectively.

The general shape of the tandoor is conical. There must be at least 10 cm of empty space between the vat and the outer layer of the brick for laying the thermal insulation material.

The process of building a tandoor

The base of the stove must be 60 cm high. The neck should protrude no more than 1500 mm above ground level.

At the base of the tandoor, it is necessary to provide a place for installing the door and grate.

The furnace of this stove should be round in shape 60-70 cm. It is located either at the very bottom or in the wall of the outer casing.

As mentioned earlier, a tandoor oven vat is easier to buy.

The insulating material between the outer and inner surfaces can be made from clay and vermiculite yourself. The specific proportions depend on the composition of these materials. Also, thermal insulation material can be purchased after consulting with a specialist in this field.

The tandoor on your site will become not just a place for cooking, but also pleasantly surprise your guests.
