Cordless saws have gained immense popularity in recent decades - they are used both by professionals in various fields and by owners of home gardens, where such a tool is widely used for garden work.

The variety of such accessories somewhat confuses an inexperienced potential buyer, so in short it is worth considering what such units are and what they are used for.

Peculiarities

Any electric saw is designed to replace the classic hand saw in terms of the main source of effort - instead of a human hand, the entire burden of performing a task is now placed on an electric motor. However, if the first electric saws were dependent on outlets, and therefore were used exclusively stationary in a workshop, then the battery allows you to work autonomously for several hours. In this case, rechargeable devices may have certain limitations associated with the specifics of the battery.

First of all, the battery capacity differs, and therefore the battery life can vary from 2-3 to 8 hours. Naturally, increased volumes of charge are achieved only by increasing the battery, so serious professional units weigh quite a lot, especially since they must also produce significant power and a high number of revolutions.

Another feature of choosing a specific model of a cordless saw is that different types of accumulators put forward special conditions for their operation. So, nickel-cadmium batteries, considered obsolete almost everywhere, had a "memory effect", that is, they regularly required a complete discharge and then the same charging, otherwise they quickly lost their charge volume, but they were practically not exposed to cold.

Modern lithium-ion batteries, often used not only in saws, but also in other rechargeable devices, with a low weight, they can boast of a significant charge, and even without harm they are able to charge at any time, without losing their charge during a long idle period, but they are quickly discharged during operation or storage at low temperatures. Considering that in cool regions, of which there are many in our country, the choice may not be so obvious, some manufacturers still offer two different types of batteries in the kit.

Principle of operation

In most cases and varieties of electric saws, energy from a battery or power supply is supplied to the engine, which, using various devices, transmits torque, driving the cutting mechanism. The latter in different modifications may look completely different. In a circular saw, it is a circle with sharpened teeth along the entire circumference, in a chain tool, its function is performed by the chain itself with a turn along the body, saber modifications and jigsaws use a blade movable back and forth by analogy with the original hand saw and jigsaw.

The electric motor allows not only less effort to cut, but also provides a higher speed of the task, because thanks to the motor, an impact is achieved that is significantly faster than what a person could provide with his bare hands.Increased productivity can create an additional hazard to the operator in the form of debris flying in all directions, so work with such equipment is carried out only with glasses and gloves, and the design itself often requires some protection.

Battery models, due to their focus on maximum mobility, often lack many of the advantages of their stationary counterparts. For example, they are rarely equipped with a nozzle for a vacuum cleaner, so they leave more debris behind. At the same time, different types of construction often provide different solutions to simplify the work or additional protection of the main components.

Modern manufacturers are actively working to ensure that their tools do not wedge, they are also intensively introducing technologies for smooth engine start at start and its automatic shutdown in case of overheating.

All these technological additions can adversely affect the weight and cost of each individual unit, but the very fact of their presence helps the device to last longer, which ultimately has a positive effect on the state of the owner's wallet.

What are they?

According to many experts, the most popular battery-powered electric saw in the coming years is a saber saw. Right now, it is relatively little known, since actually portable cordless models began to appear just recently, but in an electric network version, this mini-saw has been around for many years. In terms of the body, it looks very similar to another hand-held power tool, for example, the same screwdriver, but its working attachment looks like a saw or knife, which protrudes from the depths of the body at high speed and then retracts back.

The high popularity of this type of power tool and the projected growth in demand for cordless models is due to the fact that it is the reciprocating hand saw that has the widest range of applications. This tool allows for rather fine processing, therefore it is popular among professional carpenters, at the same time it is suitable for tree pruning, which is very relevant for all owners of summer cottages. Moreover, even the formation of aerated concrete blocks will be mastered by this small saw, so the future is most likely for her.

In the meantime, battery-powered chain saws are much more widespread. It is the battery version that is quite rare, since such a mechanism much more often receives energy from a small gasoline engine - this allows you to work in almost any conditions for an unlimited amount of time, cutting large volumes of wood of any thickness. Cordless models are not yet very popular for the reason that this type of tool consumes a truly huge amount of energy, so the average battery is enough for cutting a maximum of one small tree.

Chainsaws with this type of power source may gain additional popularity as batteries evolve. Chainsaws have no competitors in terms of cutting thick trunks, and after all, battery operation helps to get rid of unnecessary noise and corrosive exhaust gases. In addition, the gasoline engine of the saw in cool and wet weather does not always start without problems, whereas a battery would completely eliminate this disadvantage.

Battery-powered circular or circular saws are not uncommon for a long time, they can be found everywhere, but they have one serious drawback. The fact is that such a unit, due to the peculiarities of a replaceable nozzle made in the form of a circle of significant diameter, is not capable of performing a figured cut. But it makes it possible to cut quickly and rather accurately without unnecessary effort, although the main consumers of such a tool are still either sawmills or repairmen who perform sawing on the road.

Another drawback of the circular saw could be called exclusively work with relatively thin sheet materials, but it, in fact, was invented for this. Although this greatly reduces the scope of such a device in the home, it is an ideal invention for industry, since this tool is one of the lightest, but has a high performance.

For a long time, circular saws were considered a tool for wood, but in recent years, thanks to diamond brazing, models for metal and plastic have also appeared on replaceable discs.

The last type of cordless saw is the electric jigsaw. In terms of purpose, such a unit is practically the opposite of a circular saw - although it can cut in a straight line, it is sharpened precisely for a figured cut. This tool has a very modest size, so it cannot cut too fast, but its meaning is not in speed, but in the accuracy of the cut out outlines of a complex shape. Since this unit will still not help in solving most industrial problems, but it successfully copes with the creation of various elegant small things, it is often used at home by amateur carpenters.

At the same time, you should not take the battery jigsaw purely as home entertainment - some models are specially designed for cutting metal sheets, tiles and other thin materials, and the possibility of replacing files also helps to diversify the functions of each individual unit. Considering all this, the device can be used both in the process of performing repairs and for the manufacture of various useful parts.

Manufacturers overview

The model range of each of the well-known manufacturers is regularly updated, so it makes no sense to single out specific models, especially since each consumer has different needs. But you should evaluate the specifics of certain manufacturers - in general, the choice of a more eminent and expensive brand is almost always justified. As is often the case with various industrial products, the highest quality, but also a rather high price, is often distinguished by Western-made cordless saws (including Japanese ones).

Companies such as the American DeWalt, the German Bosch or the Japanese Makita have built a positive image for themselves for decades. and simply do not have the right to cross it out with childish mistakes, so their products are always flawless. It is these manufacturers who are most often the first to introduce new technologies aimed at improving the safety of the operator and the tool itself.

If there is a desire to save money, but there is no desire to take too much risk, you can also choose lesser-known brands - on the condition that their production is also located somewhere in Europe or North America. Without being promoted, such a manufacturer does not allow itself to inflate prices, but at the same time, you cannot be sure of the high quality of the product or that it is not made in China.

Such firms often turn out to be fly-by-night, so we will not advertise any of them. Another option for saving can be the purchase of domestic power tools - for example, from Interskol. Products manufactured in our country are often difficult to call ideal, they are little exported abroad, but at least we know about their shortcomings, besides, service centers are always somewhere nearby, as is the case with famous foreign brands. The guaranteed availability of instructions in Russian is another reason why such an inexpensive saw can be a good choice for a beginner.

Chinese products are completely unpredictable. Manufacturers from this country like to save even where savings are obviously inappropriate, and this can affect the quality of the tool or the safety of working with it.

This is not to say that all Chinese saws are worse than those from Interskol, but they are almost always cheaper, but you can rarely find reviews of brands from the Middle Kingdom, so think carefully before you buy such a unit.

Which one to choose?

You need to choose a specific model of a cordless saw, starting from the tasks assigned to it. As we could see above, for a start it is worth deciding at least a type, since different technical solutions are created to perform diverse tasks and are not always interchangeable.

  • To maintain your own garden and cut fallen trees for firewood, purchase a chain saw - it is most appropriate when working with thick logs. Choose a powerful model, because there simply cannot be any special “household” solutions in this category - solid logs are always a serious challenge for the cutting tool.
  • If you think that the tree that has collapsed on the site is not firewood, but material for creating wooden furniture or buildings, and at any time you are ready to buy material for self-designing carpentry products, choose a circular saw. Please note that the main thing here will not even be the engine power, but the cutting depth - you must be sure that your materials are not thicker than this indicator. The same tool will work if its owner is engaged in home renovation or professionally
  • For precise and fine cutting, whether it be parts for a functioning mechanism or a simple decoration for the home, a jigsaw is best suited. The abundance of various canvases will allow you to choose a fairly versatile tool that will solve many household problems. Here, too, the main criterion will be the cutting depth, since jigsaws are also designed for sheet material, but it is these units that have the lowest power, so make sure not to buy a "toothless" tool.
  • A reciprocating saw is theoretically suitable for most of the tasks described, but in practice its dimensions usually do not allow a good chain saw to be replaced.

In terms of the scope of application, such a unit is closest to a circular saw, only it still allows for the possibility of cutting with a gradual turn.

In the next video, you will find an overview of the Bosch AKE 30 Li cordless chain saw.
