Perhaps, everyone in the house has indoor plants growing on the windowsill. In the whirlpool of life, it is not always possible to take care of them on time. Therefore, cacti are perfect for workaholics. These are unpretentious plants that do not require special care, while they can be watered much less often than ordinary indoor flowers. Many people may be faced with the fact that the cactus can begin to rot or get sick. You can avoid such problems by purchasing the most suitable pot for this plant.

Criterias of choice

Succulents are representatives of the flora with a very thick fabric for storing water supplies.

Growing succulents does not require much effort and time. These are unpretentious plants, they are extremely hardy to the quality and quantity of soil. At the same time, watering is carried out quite rarely.

They can be of two types.

  • Stem. Such plants are distinguished by a ribbed and thickened stem.
  • Leafy. They accumulate moisture in the pulp of the leaves.

When choosing a pot for a cactus, you need to remember that plants do not tolerate stagnant fluid well, therefore it is important that their root system is dry and warm.

The quality of the pot, its size and the material from which it will be made depends on how the plant develops. It is important that the pot has drainage holes.

The choice of the pot should be in proportion to the plant itself and its roots.

  • In the event that the root has a tap or turnip shape, choose a deep pot.
  • If the depth of the container is insufficient, then the root system will rest against the bottom and rot.
  • When choosing, you need to take into account that a higher pot is needed for a long cactus. If the root of a plant is like a carrot, it needs a tall pot.
  • If the root grows in breadth, it is better to choose a flat, low pot.
  • For cacti with a fibrous root system, pots of large diameter and width are chosen.
  • When replanting plants, it is important that the size of the pot matches the parameters of the cactus. So, the size of the container should be 2 cm larger than the size of the roots.

If you do not adhere to these rules and plant a small cactus in a large pot, the plant may die due to soil acidification.

It is better to transplant the cactus into a pot of a more suitable size, or pour more expanded clay on the bottom so that the root and neck of the cactus are in the ground.

If the plant grows in a small pot, then the root will soon rest against the wall of the pot and begin to rot.

Choosing a pot is a responsible business. It must match the plant.

  • If a lush plant is planted, then the pot should be chosen the simplest.
  • For less ornamental plants, you should choose a bright and original-shaped pot.
  • Plants with strict forms are more suitable for a "Japanese" pot. For example, you can choose a container with contrasting shades that change from dark to light colors or painted with hieroglyphs.

It is better to put containers in yellow or orange colors on the windowsill, they will add sunlight to the room.

Materials (edit)

For indoor plants, it is better to choose dishes made from natural materials. Small plastic pots in which plants are sold are used only for their transportation, so you cannot do without transplanting cacti.

The most common materials for cacti are clay and plastic products. Pottery has its advantages.

  • It is a porous material.
  • High stability. This allows tall plant species to be planted and grown in these pots.
  • The material retains its shape well, does not deform under the influence of the sun or high humidity.
  • Evaporates moisture well.

In addition to obvious advantages, the material also has disadvantages. These include the rather large weight of the products. Also, during watering, a white bloom forms inside the container, that is, a salt layer, which leads to alkalization of the soil.

Plastic containers, which are more often called plastic, appeared in everyday life not so long ago, but have already been able to gain great popularity. Plastic products can be reusable and disposable, which affects their cost.

The positive properties of plastic pots.

  • Light weight of the product. They can be easily transported, carried and transported to any convenient place.
  • It is convenient to store plastic products.
  • Aesthetic look. There is an opportunity to purchase pots of various shapes and colors.

The disadvantages of this material include the fact that the walls of the product do not allow moisture to pass through, therefore watering is limited in order to avoid decay of plant roots.

When choosing a pot for a cactus, it is worth considering the size of the plant. If we are talking about small specimens, you can stop at a plastic product. In this case, the water will evaporate evenly without stagnation, so infrequent watering will not damage the roots.

Many cactus lovers prefer to grow plants in pots, which provides them with a lot of space. Such landscape compositions look very beautiful and attractive. When planting several types of plants in bowls, their condition is taken into account. At the same time, it is important that the same growing conditions are required for succulents and cacti.

With the simultaneous planting of large and small cacti in one bowl, a gradual displacement of small plants will be observed.

A large cactus will grow and its root system will restrict the growth of small plants, leading to their death.

Experienced gardeners do not recommend planting white and green cactus species in the same container. White cacti require more sunshine, while green plants are better shaded.

Cacti in bowls will feel better in lighted places, for example, on a windowsill. In this case, it is better to choose a plastic bowl with a pallet.

In the event that cacti will be grown on external window sills, boxes are chosen that do not contain asbestos.

When growing larger succulents, it is best to choose an earthenware pot. A clay pot is much more stable, so it can withstand a lot of weight and will not turn over.

The form

When choosing a pot for succulents, the personal preferences of the gardener are taken into account. Dishes for plants can have various shapes: more often you can see products of a round or square shape on sale. There are also products of non-standard shapes and sizes.

It should be noted that square containers will take up less space, which is important for small spaces.

Experienced flower growers prefer to choose pots of the correct shape with the edges curved inward. Most often, they plant flowers in round containers, since it is easier to extract the plant from them during transplantation.

Original models

If the standard pots look trite and are already bored, you can opt for more original models. They can be manually painted with paints or decorated with materials of different textures.

Flowers planted in glassware will look very interesting. In this case, you can alternate dark soil with small white pebbles.

Even the most common glass jars of various shapes and sizes can serve as pots for succulents and cacti.

Plants planted in a glass ball with a hole look very original. To disembark, you must take:

  • the plant itself;
  • glass vessel;
  • land;
  • decorative elements.

You can buy a container with a bottom and put it on the table, or find a product with a hook and hang it.

For those who prefer Japanese motives, you can choose an oblong pot on a wooden stand.

Concrete pots or made of stone will be a great addition to the interior. Concrete is a very durable building material; it is used by flower growers to grow cacti and succulents. You can make pots for plants from concrete with your own hands, which will surprise you with a variety of shapes.

Hanging pots are also made of concrete or combined vases are built.

Also noteworthy are flower stands. Even the simplest flower pot will look more interesting on a decorative stand.
