Flowers occupy an important place in the interior of the house. But putting them in simple vases is hardly wise. In order to preserve the pristine plant beauty for a long time, it is worth using special containers.

Advantages and disadvantages

Flower pots with an auto-irrigation system have both fans and enemies. Basically, such pots are necessary for those people who often go on long trips. Holidays, business trips, long-term treatment or a visit to relatives in another region, another country are often forced to leave an apartment unattended. Not everyone has someone to entrust the care of plants at this time. And it is not always convenient for the owners. If you use a pots with automatic watering, you can safely leave for at least a month, without causing problems to anyone.

A similar result is achievable only if the indoor microclimate is optimal. Excessive heat or extreme cold will kill plants even with the most careful watering. For sedentary growers, automatic irrigation is attractive for another reason - it allows you to use one pot longer, less often replanting the crop. A classic planter requires replanting immediately after the roots emerge through the drainage canals. But irrigated by an automatic system allows you to leave the flower after that for another 2-4 years alone.

But it is important to understand that full-fledged automatic watering will be possible only for 3-4 months of the growing season. Until the roots have grown to the lower soil layer, watering should only take place in the traditional way. To reduce the waiting time, you will have to use stimulants for the development of the root system. It is also worth considering that a high-quality pots with automatic watering are never cheap, no matter what the sellers say. Possible disadvantages of automatic designs are:

  • increased price;
  • great complexity;
  • increased sizes;
  • the need for careful selection and application.

How does it work?

Nevertheless, pots with auto-irrigation are very popular, if only because they allow you to save energy on the most time-consuming manipulation. The other components of houseplant care are much easier. For beginners who do not yet have proper experience in flower growers, automatic watering is also valuable because it smoothes out many mistakes. The principle of operation of a pots with such a function is technically quite clear. Automatic irrigation is carried out according to the capillary technique. The law of communicating vessels, described even in school textbooks, can be safely illustrated with such devices.

No matter how sophisticated the engineers are, there will always be two main options. In the first case, the planter is divided into two parts and supplemented with a liquid reservoir. In the second, a dividing barrier is placed. But other features differ significantly.

There are designs where the tank is made in the form of a cone. This reservoir is inserted into a pot and then connected to a tube. The tube itself rises above the surface and is equipped with an indicator showing how much water is still left. Alternatively, one container is inserted into another. The reservoir located on the side actually performs the function of a channel as well.

There are also collapsible devices. A separating barrier, an indicator tube and a container are inserted into a planter of this type. All three parts are sold separately. The assembly is carried out by the growers themselves immediately before planting. Such pots sometimes allow a combination of bottom watering with moistening the sides of an earthen coma. A float tube is used as an indicator, on which the lowest and highest level is marked.

Some of the suppliers, along with the "plumbing" components, also add a special mixture for drainage to the product package. Such a composition is calculated for a rational water supply in a metered mode. However, in most cases, traditional drainage is still used. Moisture is absorbed into the substrate due to the capillary effect. The rise of water occurs, albeit slowly, but evenly.

As a result, just as much water is supplied as the plant needs. Of course, within the capacity of the tank. This minimizes the risk that the substrate will dry out unnecessarily or become unnecessarily wet. Damage to plants in the absence of hosts due to changes in air temperature is excluded. It is worth considering that when transplanting an adult plant into a container with automatic irrigation, its diameter cannot be increased in comparison with the previous container.

If a competent auto-irrigation system is used, flower owners are freed almost completely from worrying about such moments as:

  • maintaining the temperature of the liquid;
  • watering strictly to the root (without water getting on the foliage or on the shoots);
  • prevention of diseases provoked by improper moisture;
  • the need to drain liquid from the pallets;
  • meticulous control over the amount of water and the rate of drying of the substrate.

Most importantly, "smart" pots allow you to provide even individual conditions for each specific type of plant. The experience level of the grower becomes less important. It is possible to cultivate even the most unstable flowers without spending a lot of extra effort.

It is important to take into account that the choice of pots with automatic watering is somewhat less than the range of the usual flower pots. But all of them are ideal for a wide variety of interiors and are distinguished by a well-thought-out design.

Functions

Having found out exactly how pots and pots with automatic watering can work, it is not difficult to name their main tasks:

  • maintaining an optimal microclimate;
  • growing the most fastidious plants;
  • cultivating flowers even in the absence of a person for a long time;
  • compensation for the negative consequences of various errors.

Varieties

Solving various problems requires the use of specific designs. An underground automatic irrigation device usually involves filling the gap that separates the walls of the tank from the tank containing water. For this gap, expanded clay or gravel is usually used. The types of pots are determined primarily by where they are placed. In most cases, plastic floor pots or planters are used.

The difference between a pot and a planter is that the planter does not have holes through which excess water is drained. Outdoor structures are generally made from the most durable materials. Plastic containers are used primarily for home use. A floor product is preferable if you want to disguise old, deformed flower pots. It will also help to fit dissimilar containers into a specific interior.

Planters installed on the floor most often have:

  • on the balcony (loggia);
  • in the courtyard;
  • on the veranda or on the terrace.

Consumers have a choice between a long container with several flower containers and a single structure.

However, sometimes they give preference to racks in which vases are built. Flowers hanging outward will completely cover the racks visually. From the outside it will seem that this is a full-fledged bush or tree. Of course, a lot depends on the appearance of the selected plant.

Plastic floor planters come in a variety of shapes, sizes and even colors. This material is good because it is resistant to sunlight and cold. Even in the event of a fall or a strong blow, the flowerpot almost always remains operational. Wooden structures are divided into 2 subspecies: purchased in a store and made by hand. A special impregnation helps to prevent the destruction of wood from constant contact with moisture.

If aesthetic considerations come first, you can safely give preference to pots or pots made of ceramics. But one must always remember about their great fragility. Typically, an attractive appearance is achieved through elaborate patterns and glaze. In most cases, metal containers are made by forging. And in terms of strength and elegance, there is no equal to products made of synthetic stone - however, their price is very high.

Along with floor pots, hanging flower pots are also widely used. Vine baskets can be used in this capacity. The flexibility of the material allows you to give it a variety of configurations:

  • rectangle (box);
  • triangle;
  • cone;
  • spheres;
  • parallelepiped.

Hanging flowerpots are sometimes made of wire or forged metal. In any case, when preparing them, it is necessary to provide for compatibility with the irrigation system. Therefore, it is necessary to give preference to the products of leading companies. And if the structure is assembled independently, you will have to draw up a scrupulous drawing. Hanging pots, regardless of whether automatic watering is provided or not, must be fixed as securely as possible.

Wall pots and pots deservedly stand out in a special group. They allow you to grow flowers even where there is almost no free space.

But the problem is that not every wall can withstand a heavy suspended structure. After all, it must also bear the load from a tank full of water. Therefore, this option should be considered only as a last resort.

Popular models

When choosing a model of a pots or a pot with automatic watering, you should not ignore products made in Russia. Domestic products in many cases are not inferior to leading foreign brands. A striking example of this is the Comfort model self-watering pot from the Tekhosnastka company. Its capacity is 3.5 liters. By default, it is painted in red mother-of-pearl. For the manufacture of the container, special plastic was used. The pot is supplied as a tabletop design. No pattern is applied to it.

Of the imported alternatives, the Green Sun automatic irrigation pots deserve attention. The manufacturer claims that its product is equipped with a lightweight and at the same time very durable case. The outer casing is made by molding ABS plastic. Casting is carried out under pressure. A different material is used for the hydraulic insert. The designers took care of a uniform supply of moisture to the root system of the grown plants. The development also provides control over the intensity of water inflow, as a result, the risk of soil acidification is reduced, and root rot is also much less likely.

Green Sun is equipped with a water quantity indicator. A well thought-out neck makes the flow of water into the bottom of the planter more stable. An inorganic granular substrate is supplied with the container. This substance can accumulate up to 40% of water (in relation to its own volume). Due to this property, if all other systems operate smoothly, aeration of the root system will be ensured.

Engineers have provided functions for draining stagnant liquid and flushing the internal reservoir. The advantage of Green Sun is that in favorable conditions, you can pay attention to the pots every 1 or even 2 months. Compared to comparable analogs, the device costs half the price. Its undoubted advantage is its wide variety of colors and geometric configurations.The special coating is selected in such a way that it excludes fading even after prolonged use. Structural plastic "Green Sun" is highly resistant to impacts and chips. It is not difficult to use such a product, even for non-professionals. The dimensions of the structure can be flexibly varied.

The best option allows you to refuse to fill the container with nutrient soil to the full depth. In addition to watering, it is advisable to add small portions of fertilizer there.

An excellent alternative to this product is the Coubi planter. The square design has dimensions of 19x19x18 cm. The following can be used as a structural material:

  • polyvinyl chloride;
  • polypropylene;
  • polystyrene.

The manufacturer claims that the capacity of the tank is enough for different plants for 14-84 days. The attractive design of the Coubi will be a true addition to any office and living space. The Polish company produces pots in four different colors.

But among the Chinese products, the Green Apple model pot with an autowatering system attracts attention. The basic materials for its manufacture are the same. Consumers note that Green Apple is made of impeccable quality plastic. Some modifications are equipped with an overflow valve. However, it is not possible to drain 100% of the water. Some users also note that the indicator does not work well. It is difficult to say if this is due to marriage or fakes.

Among the pots with automatic irrigation, the Puro Color products also stand out. This version is supplied by Lechuza. The capacity of the tank, depending on the nuances of use, ranges from 2 to 12 weeks. The pot, located inside the planter, is equipped with elaborate retractable handles. Thanks to the features of the product, you can:

  • transfer even fairly tall plants without problems;
  • replace grown crops;
  • quickly remove flowers for the winter;
  • pour out excess water through the hole in the bottom.

It is appropriate to complete the review of systems with automatic irrigation on products sold in IKEA stores. Among them, the Feyo model stands out. This pot is equipped with special wheels, which greatly facilitates moving to a new place. With an external diameter of 35 cm, the internal volume is 32 cm, while you will have to assemble the product yourself.

How to choose?

When choosing pots and pots with automatic watering, the following requirements must be taken into account:

  • accelerated outflow of water (waterlogging is completely unacceptable);
  • the ability to safely remove rhizomes;
  • maintaining a rational thermal regime;
  • effective aeration of the flower and the surrounding substrate.

Certain varieties of flowers (in particular, orchids) have roots that can participate in photosynthesis. Therefore, opaque pots are unlikely to work for them. But the excess of the substrate is not at all justified - even a large orchid will feel good in a shallow container. The main thing is that the roots fit confidently in the pot. What must be mandatory is the drainage holes. The orchid does not tolerate glass containers well. Plastic products are much better suited. However, they will have to be drilled (to provide air access) and additionally decorated.

When choosing a pot for indoor plants, it is worth remembering that phalaenopsis feels best in a clay container. Ceramics are environmentally friendly, but when installed near heating devices, due to the rapid evaporation of moisture, the roots can be supercooled. Wick systems are recommended when a large number of moisture-loving plants need to be grown. The wick is made of nylon, nylon or other well-wetted materials.

The level of surface tension is critical. The wick method is ideal for cultivating Saintpaulias, Streptocarpus, Gloxinia.

Crops that are less active in winter and autumn allow watering the ground through the wick only in spring and summer.It is difficult to water large plants with the wick method. But for violets (those very Saintpaulias), it is even recommended by professionals. It must be borne in mind that the root system of the violet spreads over the surface of the earth. Therefore, a large container is not needed. The diameter of the flowerpot used must strictly match its width.

If the flower grows so much that the pot becomes small for it, you just need to shake out part of the earth. In this form, the plant is transplanted into a container of a similar size. Attempts to use a larger pots threaten the death of the plant. When a violet is immediately planted in a large container, its leaves will develop forcefully (to the detriment of flowers), and the earth, not braided by roots, will deteriorate. Anyway it is worth giving preference to products with a pallet, which avoid waterlogging.

How to use it correctly?

Choosing the right self-watering pots and pots is not enough - they still need to be used rationally. As already mentioned, it is undesirable to fill the container with water immediately after transplanting. We must wait until the earth sags evenly and the roots germinate. If the float has dropped to the minimum mark, this does not mean that it is time to pour water. It is necessary to take out the float itself and inspect it. When it is noticeably wet or covered with water droplets, it is not time to use the self-irrigation system. But even noticing the dryness of the float, it is worth checking the ground. A wooden stick is stuck into it.

It is necessary to pour in a new portion of water only after the soil has completely dried to its full depth. Each plant is individual, the optimal regime is often found only after trial and error. It so happens that a flower "drinks" water from a reservoir for a very long time, and then for a long time the earth does not dry out completely. Then you need to fill the container halfway. The thickness of the drainage layer is also selected individually.

The lighter the soil, the more pores there are, the easier it is to achieve a good result. This is especially important when it is planned to grow a palm tree or other tree.
