Gas ovens have been popular for decades. They are almost independent of power supply and have a number of other advantages. But in order to choose the right oven, you need to carefully study its features and technical nuances.

What it is?

The oven is an essential part of kitchen appliances. There are a huge number of oven designs and their individual models. It is quite easy to understand the existing assortment if you pay attention to the correct classification. She will not allow you to get confused and make ridiculous mistakes. The difference is, first of all, that some models are combined with the hob, while others do not depend on it. According to this indicator, the technique is divided into groups:

  • dependent;
  • independent.

Many people have a preference for standalone embedded models. They take up less space and fit into any room design (if only because they are not striking). But the built-in versions are usually less productive, and besides, they cannot be installed everywhere.

Modern ovens have gone far from their "progenitors" that existed 30-40 years ago. Now it is possible not only to "put to fry or bake" something in the oven. All models that are found in stores now can do a lot, even if we talk only about budget-class products. Ovens with an abundance of auxiliary functions are widespread:

  • convection;
  • grill;
  • skewers;
  • telescopic guides.

Convection is gradually becoming an almost mandatory mode in ovens. It is so valuable that models that are not able to implement such an option will soon disappear. Thanks to this function, the dependence of the food temperature on the distance to the heating elements is significantly reduced. But the answer to the question of what a gas oven is cannot be considered fully disclosed, unless you point out its weak and strong points.

Advantages and disadvantages

Gas ovens have many advantages.

  • Gas ovens are relatively cheap. Moreover, gas is more economical than electricity.
  • The possibility of working from bottled gas is very attractive - especially where there are no main power lines or gas pipelines.
  • The high temperature of the open flame allows food to be cooked fairly quickly in the mini tabletop oven.
  • If necessary, quickly change the degree of heating. This property is very important when preparing baked goods or large pieces of meat or fish. Burning on the outside of a dish that is not yet ready inside is excluded.

The technique also has certain disadvantages.

  • Gas ovens cool down too quickly. It is difficult to languish various dishes in them.
  • Possible saturation of food with gas combustion products.

You can often hear statements that gas ovens are not functional enough, and that electric stoves have more modes. However, this is difficult to consider as an unambiguous drawback: the fewer settings, the fewer problems. Overly complex designs are less reliable. And you should also consider:

  • increased risk of fire and explosion;
  • risk of gas poisoning;
  • impossibility of correct installation without the help of specialists;
  • accumulation of soot and carbon deposits inside the oven.

Specifications

Colour

Coloring can be quite important: after all, a product that is attractive in terms of technical parameters should also be liked and fit the interior. White ovens are the undisputed classics.Don't think that white models will look old-fashioned. Modern appliances are beautifully decorated. But in any case, the style of the kitchen space and design principles must be taken into account. The impeccable classic style usually implies the choice of black ovens. They go well with any kitchen set. Regardless of the environment, such devices look strict and concise, without focusing on themselves. They should not be used as indoor dominants.

In addition to white and black ovens, there are often items with beige, gray or silver colors. They are neutral and versatile. However, you don't have to limit yourself to just classic tonalities. The range of products is very wide, you can find an aggregate of almost any color.

The size

Any gas oven, regardless of color, weighs quite a lot. And the larger the product, the heavier it turns out to be. Dimensions must be taken into account both for free-standing and for units built into kitchen sets. The typical value is considered to be 0.6X0.6 m. But there are also designs of non-standard sizes that are selected for a specific room. Most commercially available ovens have a depth of 0.55 m. This value will suit even owners of small kitchens. But if the area is very small, you need to choose models with a depth of 0.45 m. True, this technique is unlikely to be able to cook many dishes. If this is critical, it is worth choosing other parameters: not 0.6X0.45, but 0.45X0.6 m. The mass of a structure is usually determined by:

  • product brand;
  • the materials used;
  • geometry;
  • the number of accessories;
  • the thickness of the metal.

Power

Gas ovens, like electrical counterparts, have different capacities. Traditionally, it is measured in watts. The power of the gas oven can be up to 4 kW. For electrical products, the top bar is smaller: only 3 kW. There is a clear relationship between temperature and power consumption. Not only the maximum temperature is important, but also the minimum temperature. Some dishes require very little warming up. The vast majority of dishes that are used in modern cuisine require a cooking temperature of no more than 220 °. The unit limits usually range from 250 to 300 °. But increased heating cannot be considered an unnecessary option.

Even the most conservative people occasionally carry out culinary experiments. Therefore, it is important to know the capabilities of the device. In addition to power in watts, it is useful to find out information about gas consumption in cubic meters. It is always indicated in the technical documentation. If sellers refuse to provide this documentation, it is better to refuse to purchase.

Views

There are many types of ovens depending on the functionality. Home appliance professionals and chefs alike have a clear preference for independent gas ovens. They are operated autonomously from the hobs. And if something happens to the automation of one device, then the other will remain operational. But not all models have automatic control components.

Devices operated by mechanical switches are relatively inexpensive. In addition, mechanics are much more reliable than automation. It will work quietly for many years, even if the operation is very intensive. And mechanical devices are not too difficult to fix. However, you will have to put up with a small number of modes and insufficient accuracy of setting the temperature.

Among mechanical models, those with recessed switches are preferred: they will not allow you to accidentally ignite a fire.

Designs with an electric ignition function are attractive. Such gas-electric ovens should be placed as close to the outlet as possible. But it must be borne in mind that the cable should not warm up during cooking. The disadvantage of this technique is that the regular ignition will not work in the event of a power outage. The difference between the models of ovens can also be related to the way of self-cleaning.

  • The catalytic technique is the most economical. It is used in both standalone and built-in units. The bottom line is that catalytic enamel is applied to the inner walls. Its surface is rough to the touch, and fat accumulates in the pores. There it is chemically degraded. However, even the best examples of catalytic enamel will not be able to survive more than 250 working cycles - then the coating will need to be renewed.
  • The most perfect type of ovens are those with a pyrolytic cleaning mode. It is very simple: when you start a special program, the temperature inside reaches 480 or even 500 °. Fat and other organic contaminants are burned out. Only ash remains, which can be removed with a damp piece of cloth. But the problem is that smoke is inevitably emitted, which only a powerful hood can remove.
  • Steam (aka hydrolysis) cleaning is more effective than other options. The models in which it is used are relatively inexpensive. There is no need to use toxic synthetic products. Everything is very simple: about 0.1 liters of water is added to a special depression. It will have to be heated up to 100-120 ° for 20 minutes (sometimes a little longer).

There are devices with various options. The gas oven with grill is chosen mainly by those who love fried meat or fish. But since these dishes may be needed at any time to receive guests, it is useful for other people to choose the appropriate technique. A rarer microwave option is underestimated.

This solution turns out to be quite practical, in addition, it allows you to save space in small apartments.

However, one must take into account the increased cost of combined gas ovens. In addition, the combined technique will not replace a full-fledged microwave oven. It cannot be equipped with a rotating pan, which excludes the maintenance of uniform heating. And also the microwave component makes you refuse to use any metal containers. It is also worth considering the types of ovens in size. Contrary to popular misconception, professionals say unequivocally: the problems are not in narrow niches. The main difficulties are caused by ignoring the height of the niches for embedding. Attention: models with a microwave unit in any case will have non-standard dimensions: they always have a small height.

However, ovens with microwaves are not yet the most compact units. Some models may be lower than 0.4 m. Above the normal value will be all modifications with an additional oven (even if it is located on the side). Particularly narrow technology is needed for embedding in compact pencil cases. In a large kitchen, you can safely put cabinets 0.9 and even 1.2 m wide.

Therefore, it will be possible to bake various products without using oil. The oven warms up, according to the manufacturer, in a few seconds. It is impossible to burn yourself on the triple glass. However, there is no convection mode; many people will not like the fact that there is no display.

Electrolux EOG 91102AX

The oven is made of first-class stainless steel. The manufacturer claims that all dishes inside will be baked flawlessly. The inner chamber is fully illuminated. To ensure this, a special lamp shines on the back wall. If the glass in the door gets clogged, it can be easily removed and washed. Unfortunately, the child lock function is not provided. But there is a grill. The network cable is 1.6 m long. There is a built-in fan for cooling.

Korting OGG 5409 CSX PRO

The manufacturer specifies that this oven is equipped with a tangential cooling fan. The width of the product is 0.9 m. Catalytic cleaning of the oven from the inside is provided. An attractive feature of the 5409 model is its huge volume: 110 liters. The product is designed in full compliance with the requirements of modern design.

How to choose?

To make the right choice, one must take into account not only the descriptions of specific models, but also other nuances. The narrowest ovens (up to 0.45 m or less) are suitable for families of two or three people. However, they will not allow large portions to be baked. In most cases, preference should be given to models of classic width. And the broadest versions are needed by those people who cook a lot and often. Traditionally, most gas ovens are equipped with hinged doors.This solution is convenient. But it should be chosen only if there is enough free space in front of the kitchen appliance.

Regardless of the opening method, the more glasses there are in the door, the better the device. This will help you cook food faster and reduce the risk of burns.

Based on the feedback from a large number of consumers, we can confidently conclude that a good gas oven:

  • illuminated from the inside;
  • has protection from children;
  • automatically cuts off the gas supply if the flame goes out;
  • ignites gas with an electrical impulse;
  • allows you to use heating food from above and below, both together and separately;
  • has a timer (automatically shut off or beeps).

How to install?

After purchasing a suitable gas oven, it is required to install it according to all the rules. But just examining the requirements is not enough. It is strictly obligatory to contact the gas industry specialists for connection. The choice of the place for installation depends on the owners. Dependent cabinets are placed under the hob, and independent cabinets are placed where the owners see fit. Note: Even the best ovens generate heat through the walls. Therefore, the lack of a gap between them and the kitchen set has a very bad effect on both furniture and equipment. Usually, a minimum of 0.04 m is left between the back line of the cabinet and the wall, and at the edges of 0.05 m.There should be at least 0.09 m between the walls of the niche and the bottom of the oven.

Important: all these figures are indicative only. More precise information can be obtained from the accompanying documentation. A few more tips:

  • the place of installation of the cabinet must be chosen far from other sources of heat;
  • the installation site must be flat;
  • models with electric ignition are placed where there is a suitable outlet;
  • usability considerations should always be taken into account;
  • design decisions are taken into account last.

How to connect?

The correct connection of the gas oven can only be carried out by specialists. Dependent ovens are connected to a separate branch of the gas pipeline. This is due to the fact that the devices must have autonomous taps on the highway. Direct connection is made using copper pipes or bellows-type hoses. The method of attaching them is almost the same. When the installation is completed, it is required to assess whether everything has been done correctly.

  • The slightest pinching of the hoses is not allowed. They should not touch foreign objects.
  • The oven and its supply line are carefully grounded.
  • Do not use hoses shorter than 2 m.

The requirements for the installation of gas equipment have been developed taking into account many years of practice. They are substantiated by the analysis of many incidents and disasters.

  • Any build-up of lines and hoses is categorically unacceptable. Moreover, you should not make more than 2 adapters.
  • Before using the devices, it is necessary to check that there are no gas leaks.
  • In addition to the operability of the burners, one must also make sure of the reliability of the gas control. Be sure to check the valve that is responsible for pumping gas. If necessary, adjust it as desired.
  • It is not allowed to connect gas appliances to the first tap on the gas pipeline.
  • Direct contact between gas pipes, hoses, taps and wires is strictly excluded. It is best that any wire or cable does not even come close to such equipment. But if this is not possible, it is necessary to rigidly fix the wiring or use cable channels. Any negligence threatens with an explosion and fire.
  • After completing the installation, all joints are carefully checked using soap foam.
