Today, like many decades ago, wood is the most demanded, high-quality, environmentally friendly and safe material. Currently, due to the fact that there are many types of modern equipment and technologies, it has become much easier to process and shape it, to enhance the already excellent physical and technical parameters.

The most commonly used type of lumber is planks of various lengths, widths and thicknesses. They are used in absolutely all areas of construction, as well as in economic needs. In this article, we will tell you in detail how to properly transport the boards.

What should be considered?

Wood is a very moody and weather-dependent material.

In order for the construction work to proceed without misunderstandings, and the building or any other structure made of wood was operated correctly and not deformed, it is necessary first of all to correctly transport the material so as not to damage it.

Transportation of lumber is a rather responsible event, on which the quality of work and the structure itself depends. There are important considerations to consider.

  • Type of material, its physical and technical characteristics and parameters. It is very important to know how the material was made, whether the wood was treated with special protective paints and varnishes during the production process. Also important are parameters such as the length, width and thickness of the tree.
  • Weather. It is well known that a tree, especially if it is edged wood that does not lend itself to additional processing, changes its properties and parameters under the influence of sunlight, rain and other precipitation. The ideal option for transporting lumber is nice warm weather.
  • Transport. The integrity and safety of wood for transportation is highly dependent on the transport that will transport the material. It should be chosen taking into account the volume of transported material, distance, as well as the weather. For example, if you want to transport boards 6 meters long, you will need either a passenger car with a trailer, or a wagon.

It is very important, no matter how much lumber and no matter what type of transport you are transporting, to have your documents with you. Transporting timber without them is a crime.

If the transportation is carried out by road, then you need to have a consignment note, a supply agreement, an annex to the contract and, of course, a check that confirms the legality of the purchase.

If transportation is carried out by rail, then an appropriate waybill and shipping certification for sawn timber is required.

Choice of transport

Earlier in the article, we already said that the choice of a means of transportation depends on how much the integrity and characteristics of the lumber will be preserved. Currently, there are many different options for transporting boards. When choosing the right one, you need to take into account the amount of material, delivery speed, transport dimensions and the reliability of the transportation itself.

Today boards can be transported in three ways.

  • By car. You can transport it on a Gazelle or in a trailer of a car, if the volume of the body or trailer matches the parameters of the lumber.
  • By bike. This type of transportation is possible only if the volume and length of the boards are small. It is not very convenient to transport samples, the length of which is 6 meters, in this way - this can lead to an accident.
  • Railway transport. This type is ideal if you need to transport a lot of lumber over a long distance.

Here are some useful tips that will help you successfully carry out the transportation process.

  • If you want to transport material with a machine, make sure that it is passable, that you have special hydraulic equipment with which you can load and unload the forest. Also, the car must be equipped with special ropes, bolted connections and winches. The presence of the necessary fastening system guarantees high-quality and safe transportation.
  • Retain all delivery and purchase documents for the material.
  • If you conclude a supply agreement with carrier companies, make sure the legality of its activities.
  • If you are transporting lumber that has not been treated with a special septic tank, it is better to opt for transport with a closed trailer. This will protect the material from the sun and moisture.
  • In the case of transporting sawn timber by rail, all rules must be followed.

All detailed information on how to properly transport timber is indicated in the regulatory documents, which must be read without fail.

How to transport correctly?

So that during the transportation of timber you do not have any problems, you need to adhere to the basic rules of transportation.

  • When transporting the forest by bicycle or on the roof of a car, it is necessary to ensure the most reliable fastening. Boards must be securely fastened using ropes, rope or special metal fasteners.
  • If transport is carried out on a trailer, the material should never stick out of it. If it turns out that the length of the boards is greater than the dimensions of the trailer, the material must be wrapped with a signal tape so that other road users can see it.
  • When transporting boards by road, the material must be stacked in stacks.
  • The wagons are being stacked with a “cap”. It allows you to fit a fairly large number of boards in one car.

When transporting timber in wagons, you must also adhere to the rules and restrictions on the length of the material. For example, if the loading is carried out on a four-axle car, the length of the forest should not exceed 1.6 meters, in a six-axle car - no more than 4 meters. It is prohibited by law to transport ice-covered boards by rail.
