It is impossible to imagine the interior of a modern home without a mirror. Big or small, framed or rimless, it is a key part of home furnishing.

Today, these interior accessories, in addition to their practical function, have acquired a harmonious aesthetics, with their help you can visually change the perception of the space of the room in which they are located. Mirrors in the interior: we understand the intricacies of stylish room decoration.

Peculiarities

Mirrors play an important role in the interior. Models on the modern market are ordinary and magnifying, the magnification of which, depending on the model, can be from 2 to 10. These varieties allow you to comfortably clean your face and apply flawless makeup.

The convenience of many models is the presence of built-in backlight, which is external and internal. However, the choice of such varieties is limited by the tone of the light flux: sometimes it distorts the color rendition, which prevents the application of foundation and eyeshadow.

In addition, mirrors are functional and decorative.

They can be an independent interior accessory or part of a piece of furniture (for example, a front of a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, a floor hanger with a mirror, or a vanity top). At the same time, the options for installation on a horizontal surface have legs, various supports, as well as roller wheels, so that they can be freely moved to any place in the room.

The former include models for applying makeup, cosmetic procedures, shaving, the latter are designed for interior decoration. These include varieties that are not very convenient to look into: these are dressers with mirrored facades and similar legs decorated with carved patterns, as well as large mirrored canvases, the area of which is covered with a print.

Products are panoramic, curved, faceted, multi-part and psiche (with a swinging reflective surface).

Depending on the shape, the products are linear and angular. The former are ordinary direct mirrors, the latter consist of two or more sheet canvases for easy installation in the corner of the room. They are compactly placed in the corner, save room space, which is especially convenient if the mirror is part of the table. These varieties are used in the bathroom, placing them on the walls.

Products for the nursery are reminiscent of classic dressing tables with a mirrored superstructure. The hall and living room options are close to conventional framed wall models.

Views

Regardless of the form, the existing assortment of mirrors used in the creation of an interior is distinguished by purpose. A clear classification is provided to simplify the selection of a specific model.

Depending on this, the following products are distinguished:

  • Pocket - mirrors with and without a facet, similar to a notebook in a cardboard, polyvinyl chloride film, in a rectangular calico;
  • bag - models of one- and two-sided plan with the use of frosted glass, having a frame with and without a polish, more often made in the form of a rectangle, circle, oval or curly shape with a chamfer, facet and without it;
  • manual - products with one and two sides, a handle in the form of a loop, a twisted element, rings with a frame made of polystyrene, plexiglass, acrylate, plastic, without a facet;
  • road - products packed in granitol, calico, leatherette, equipped with a lining or a cardboard box, made in the form of a rectangle;
  • for shaving - accessories of one-sided and two-sided plan for men, equipped with a spherical mirror, having a polyethylene, polystyrene, acrylate frame and a classic metal stand, made in two shapes: square and rectangle;
  • wall - options with a stretcher and a floor made of solid wood or chipboard, often equipped with an openwork frame made of metal coated with bronze and gold, having a conical frame in the form of mirror segments;
  • tabletop - an alternative to wall-mounted counterparts, often have a similar and plastic stretcher, one or two work surfaces, a stand and a frame made of metal, plastic, differ in a varied shape, the presence and absence of a facet.

The mirrors also differ in thickness. For example, in pocket varieties this figure is 3-6 mm, bag mirrors are thinner: their maximum possible thickness does not exceed 4 mm.

The indicators depend on the presence of a facet: if there is one, the product is thicker. So, for road and hand-held models, the thickness can exceed 4 mm, for wall models this figure is 9 mm. In addition, each product is subject to certain standards and is categorized by visual inspection.

Material

Initially, mirrors were obtained by pouring liquefied metal onto the wall of a glass spherical vessel, which, when solidified, created a reflective surface.

The main raw material in the production of mirrors is sheet glass with or without polishing. It is based on sand, soda, limestone and other components, thanks to which the mirror does not have a greenish color.

Sheets are cut out, edges are processed, cleaned, then metallized (aluminizing for haberdashery options and silvering for furniture options) and framed.

Models intended for use in places with high humidity are treated with a protective nitro-enamel coating with bitumen varnish.

Different raw materials are used as frames in modern production. Her choice is subject to the purpose of the mirror and its size.

Among the main materials are wood, plastic and plastic.... The base of medium-sized models is often made of multi-layer plywood, fiberboard. Desktop and wall-mounted varieties are often framed in metal, wood and plastic frames.

Pocket accessories are often framed with a cardboard frame-folder, bag models are often distinguished by the design of metal, plastic, with frosted glass covers and backs. Each type of frame has its own advantages and features of operation.

The form

The times when mirrors stood out with extremely strict lines are a thing of the past. Modern brands offer a variety of forms, thanks to which this element of the interior can be a single accent or a unique composition.

The mirror can be:

  • rectangular;
  • oval;
  • square;
  • six- and eight-sided;
  • in the form of a rhombus;
  • round.

Moreover, each model may or may not have a frame, differ in the variation of the edges, allowing slight bends of the mirror sheet.

In addition to standard solutions, there are original techniques in which mirror sheets can have a smooth surface or a stylistic pattern, the shape of these mirrors can:

  • represent a part of the wall or a ledge, a rectangular column, replacing the wall cladding;
  • to look like a window, carried out in an identical frame using the same material and design;
  • present an unusual asymmetrical composition in the form of a branch with small round inserts;
  • make a kind of mirror gallery of pear-shaped models, varieties with the outline of a toilet mirror with a handle or the sun.

The unusual shape allows you to add the right atmosphere to the interior. Mirrors can be made in the form of fans, fluttering butterflies and birds, autumn leaves, puzzles, animal silhouettes. These products do not have a frame: clear edge contours are important.

The form decorated with a baguette looks interesting. So the mirror sheet acquires a certain theme and the necessary design elements that are important in drawing up an interior ensemble.

Dimensions (edit)

The dimensions of the mirrors depend on the specific model. Models are small, medium-medium, large and extra voluminous. Modern trademarks engaged in the production of mirror products set their own parameters for the size of mirrors, so today there are no clear standards. However, you can start from the classification of models.

Dimensions:

  • pocket options are approximately 7x5, 9x6 cm;
  • handbag products are close to 6-9 cm marks in round varieties, 7x5, 9x9 cm are rectangular;
  • diameter of hand-held mirrors is about 6.5-15 cm, for rectangular variants it ranges from 6.5x7 cm to 15.5x20 cm;
  • road products range from 6x10 to 10x15 cm;
  • shaving accessories close to the 13x13 cm mark in rectangular models and 10-13 cm in round counterparts;
  • wall models range from 20x40 to 100x125 cm if it is a rectangle and 30-65 if it is round;
  • desktop, divided into small and medium versions, range from 8 to 20 for round models and 9x13 - 35x40 cm for rectangular counterparts.

Models reaching a height of 10 dm and more can have different shapes: in some cases, the products are a classic rectangle upward, in others, the mirror is positioned perpendicular to the floor. Some varieties are bought on the floor in order to visually increase the space: a large mirror of this type can double the available area.

Colors

The color range of mirrors is multifaceted. Thanks to the wide range of varieties presented on the modern market, it will not be difficult to choose a model to match the existing environment.

The color is determined by the frame, which today is represented by a mass of shades. Natural wood tones are among the most popular today.... This group includes shades of light and dark wenge oak, sonoma tones, alder, cherry, taupe and brick colors of the palette.

In addition to the natural classics, the current color is white: due to the shade, such frames successfully fit into modern design trends, the style of rustic Provence, vintage and country. Classic favorites are gold, silver and bronze tones.

With regard to ultra-modern and technological stylistic solutions, preference is given to tones with a metallic sheen. Products for children's rooms can have cheerful shades. This is especially true for table mirrors: their frame can be pink, lilac, purple and any other at the request of buyers.

Style and design

The style of modern mirrors is quite diverse and depends on the appearance of the mirror and its frame:

  • Products in a wooden frame oblige to the classic design directions, which include neoclassicism, classicism, English and Italian design. Gilding, palace solemnity, carved and curved lines, medium size mirrors are welcome here.
  • Mirrors in a wooden frame and in modern directions are appropriate. For loft and grunge styles, mirrors are selected in a laconic form: they should not have decor.
  • If you need to decorate a room in an oriental theme, you cannot do without gilding and lace edges of the frame: it must match the rest of the room decoration.
  • For the Scandinavian style, the ornamentation of the stylistics is important; the sun model will be appropriate here.
  • In the Baroque style, pretentiousness cannot be avoided: for it you need a mirror in a white frame, decorated with gilding and a crown.
  • If you need to choose a model for the Provence style, you should pay attention to the options in wooden frames.
  • Art Nouveau, bionics, brutalism trends need an emphasis on metallic luster and laconicism. Contour lines can be different, mirrors can represent single, composite products, but unconditionally supported in similar interior details.

The design of mirrors today is akin to the art of an artist. The emphasis is not only on the frame: thanks to new technologies, colored and tinted mirrors are now available for purchase.

To decorate the surface, a thin layer of amalgam is applied using a blue, grayish, bronze and golden hue. This solution is especially appropriate in a modern style that emphasizes a luxurious look with a minimum of pomp.

The tinting looks great with laconic frames: it is itself a decoration that should not compete with the accent frame. Due to it, you can beat the interior with different tones of the color palette, matching the shade of the mirror surface to the color of curtains, furniture, and the accent zone of the wall. Often, frames are works of art, with openwork lace around the perimeter of the frame, carved details, additional decor and special lighting.

How to choose?

The choice of a mirror depends on its purpose and application. If you plan to buy a pocket version, here you need to build on your personal taste preferences. It is quite another matter if the mirror is part of the interior composition. It must obey a single furniture ensemble, otherwise it will stand out against the general background with an inappropriate design.

Mixing styles in one room is unacceptable, so buying a mirror should be thorough and thoughtful. In order not to get upset about an unsuccessful purchase in the future, take note of a few recommendations:

  • all mirrors are subject to quality and safety requirements, including functional, aesthetic and ergonomic standards: assess the reliability of the frame, mountings, uniform thickness of the mirror sheet, appropriate decor;
  • look at the mirror for defects: there can be no bubbles, foreign inclusions, stains, colored stripes, colored dots on the surface (this indicates a marriage of the coating);
  • the sanded facet must be perfectly polished: sharp edges are excluded to avoid injury;
  • pay attention to the correctness and clarity of the image: conduct the examination during the day, if possible in natural light;
  • the fastening of the product must be reliable, the frame must hold the mirror sheet tightly, otherwise it may soon fall out of the frame;
  • choose beautiful models: in addition to functionality, aesthetics are important in the interior, the mirror should decorate the interior, make it elegant.

Expert advice

It is not enough to buy a mirror, you need to be able to fit it into the existing environment and style.

To make it comfortable to use, it is worth taking note of a few useful recommendations from experienced designers:

  • if the initial design task is to expand the space, it makes sense to buy panoramic mirror sheets from floor to ceiling: they can change the perception of a room for the better;
  • if you want to accent one of the walls with composition mirrors (for example, to create the appearance of an inflorescence plant), it is worth considering the presence of the existing decor: it is unacceptable that there are many accents in the interior, so they lose their expressiveness;
  • small mirrors of different shapes look great, but of the same style: if it is important to decorate walls (for example, stairs or corridors) with a kind of mirror gallery, you should choose accessories so that their frames are identical in finish, design and color, while the main shape and size should differ;
  • do not overload the room with an abundance of mirrors: if there are a lot of them, this will eventually begin to depress, which will affect mood and well-being;
  • if the product is purchased for a dressing table, it is worth choosing it in such a way that it resembles a component of the toilet area: so it will harmoniously fit into the style, without interrupting the attention from the furnishings;
  • do not pursue creativity if the rooms are decorated in a classic or vintage direction: brutal models, understandable only to the elite, will not be understood by all family members, and this is important for the atmosphere of home comfort;
  • do not buy a cheap product for an interior with expensive furniture: such a mirror cannot fit into the interior, every detail of the arrangement must correspond to the desired status.
