One of the most exciting and long-awaited events in the life of a family is the birth of a child. Parents prepare with trepidation for the meeting with the baby, buying clothes, the first rattles and, of course, a crib. For crumbs to sleep, mom and dad equip not only a beautiful, but also a safe place.

An interesting piece of the interior of a children's bedroom is a canopy - an almost weightless curtain, fixed in various ways on the bed or above it.

Historical reference

The history of the appearance of canopies is rooted in the Ancient East (Ancient Persia), when these structures played the role of an umbrella that saved from the heat. First of all, they were used by representatives of the nobility, including kings.

Later, the canopy was used in the bedroom as a curtain that protects sleep from insects and drafts. At that time, people began to order the sewing of such hand-made canvases from rather dense fabrics (velvet, satin), decorating with embroidery and precious stones.

Functionality

In the modern world, there is an opinion that a canopy is a useless object that collects dust and prevents the flow of air for a baby. However, for the most part, it is made from thin fabric and mesh, which are easy to wash, dry quickly and delight the eyes of parents, perfectly letting in the air for the child.

The canopy also performs a protective function, protecting the sleep of the crumbs from drafts and flying insects, pets and their fur, bright light and dust. The latter settles on the canopy itself and does not fall on the baby and bedding. In this case, the veil is far enough from the body of the child.

This is especially good for toddlers who are highly sensitive to touch and light changes in the room.

Choosing a model and fabric

An important factor for decorating a children's bedroom is the canopy model. Each person will have their own style. Of course, any type of canopy has its advantages and disadvantages. And one of the main properties is its ease of use, namely: free access to your baby. It should be comfortable for you to take the baby in your arms and put it back, the fabric should not get in the way and tangle.

In addition, you should pay attention to the length of the canvas. It is advisable that it covers the legs of the crib. This is necessary to fulfill the protective function of the canopy.

To create a unified concept for the design of a children's room, it is a good idea to take care of the choice of the color of the canopy. Its combination with furniture and other attributes in the room will create a comfortable and cozy atmosphere.

Usually, blue and light green tones are selected for boys, light pink, lilac or beige fabric for girls. The universal colors are: white, yellow, orange. Often, the canvas is sewn in calm pastel shades, without causing visual irritation and providing a calm atmosphere. Colors can also be combined.

The canopy is quite to be done by yourself. To do this, you need to decide on the type of fabric, as well as the main purpose of the curtain for the crib. If you want to create protection from external irritants, then light organza, tulle, tulle and other types of delicate fabrics are perfect.

Cotton, coarse calico, linen will create a subdued light and a more comfortable atmosphere. The canvas itself can be changed depending on the season and weather conditions at the moment.

It is worth remembering that air passes through dense fabric much worse, while increasing the temperature in the crib. This leads to restless sleep in the infant.

If you doubt your sewing skills, then you can easily get a ready-made canopy. Often, a canopy mount is included with a toddler's bedding set. If not, when buying, you should first pay attention to the strength and stability of the structure.

The fastening itself will be hidden under the veil of the fabric, so its appearance does not matter.

The material from which the mount is made is also important; it must be environmentally friendly and without any pungent odor.

Buying a bracket-mount

When arranging a children's room, it is necessary to decide on the method of attaching the canopy.

The most common options are:

  • fixed mount (on the ceiling or on the wall above the bed);
  • mobile construction.

The first method is reliable, but at the same time not entirely practical. This method should be used if the bed will have a permanent place for a long time. However, we must not forget that when the crib is moved, holes will remain in the attachment points that spoil the interior of the room. Also, this option is not fixed on a stretch or plasterboard ceiling. The child can jerk or hang on it, which will damage the structure. In such a situation, you will have to mount the model on the wall or purchase a mobile holder.

The positive side of the fixed mount is strength and reliability. It is difficult to bend, swing, drop it. In addition, with its help, you can create a fabulous atmosphere for the kid by building a house or balloon, a princess castle for a girl or a ship for a boy.

The most common way is the hinged bracket. It is a plastic or metal structure made of a ring or oval, fixed on a tripod (pipe) with screws.

The advantages of a portable design are: the lightness of the tripod itself, ease of mounting and mobility, as well as the ability to fix it at the desired height.

In addition, the mobile mount allows you not to spoil the appearance of the walls and ceiling (you do not need to make holes for the tripod).

The disadvantage of such a bracket is that it can fall with constant movement. And as soon as the baby can reach the canvas, he will certainly want to pull it towards himself. In addition to the child himself, pets can catch and drop the curtain. The fall of the canopy is hardly dangerous, but in order not to cause a strong fear, parents need to check the strength of the structure and monitor the actions of the baby.

A good way to make the structure more durable is to strengthen the base of the canopy with a self-tapping screw. To do this, you need to drill holes in one of the side surfaces of the bed.

In the absence of such an opportunity, it is better to use other mounting options.

Installation

After choosing the mounting method, you need to decide how the canopy will be located. The placement of the canopy depends on the goals you are pursuing. There are three ways to properly attach the canopy.

  • First option: on the wide side of the bed. Thus, the entire perimeter of the bed is covered with a canvas, protecting the baby from external stimuli. In addition, this location option creates coziness and a fabulous atmosphere in the children's room. It should be noted that the arrangement on the wide side of the bed is more suitable for newborns.
  • Second option: from the side of the child's headboard. In this case, it must be borne in mind that the canopy partially covers the bed, and its protection will only extend to one side.
  • Third option: around the perimeter of the bed. To fasten the canopy in this way, use a frame base. It can be either a continuation of the bed or a separate structure on which four canvases are hung. This is how the bedrooms of older children and adults are usually equipped.

The mobile canopy mount is easy to assemble. It consists of the following elements.

  • A platform or curved tube that serves as a solid base.
  • Straight tubes connected to each other. With their help, you can adjust the height of the structure.
  • A curved tube that forms the support of the tripod.
  • An oval or circle at the top. The canvas itself is hung on this element.

Assembling the structure does not take much time, it is an easy and straightforward process. First, we connect all the parts to each other: straight tubes must be placed in the holes of the platform, then unite the upper part of the structure and the tube with a bend.

To install the canopy, just follow the simple instructions.

    • Assemble the parts into a single structure (as described above).
    • Choose a place for attaching the stick, taking into account the location of the bed in the room. It is preferable to install on the side closer to the wall.
    • Select the desired tripod height.
    • Tighten the mounts securely to the side of the bed.
    • Put the fabric on the ring. For a purchased canopy, instructions are usually attached, following which you can complete the design without any problems. If the canopy is sewn with your own hands, use the following methods: Sew special Velcro fasteners to the canopy; use a tape or an elastic band to fix the canvas, throwing the fabric over a circle or an oval of the attachment; sew ribbons or loops to the canopy, into which a circle or oval is subsequently threaded. It must first be opened.
    • Test fasteners for strength. It is necessary to make sure that the structure does not bend or break.
    • Straighten the fabric well so that the canopy looks neat and harmonious in the room, without creating obstacles to access to the child.

During the operation of the canopy, you should remember about its cleanliness. It is necessary to wipe the dust on the structure itself in time, as well as carry out timely washing of the canvas. Such simple recommendations will allow this piece of furniture to last as long as possible and benefit the baby, joy and aesthetic pleasure to the parents.
