Kitchen sets are gradually replacing buffets, which is why they are less and less in demand. However, a sideboard made of wood is able to create coziness in the room, add charm and variety to the interior. These cabinets are often used to store dishes, textiles, cereals or cookbooks. Models with open showcases often become a place for displaying beautiful tea sets, expensive figurines, antiques, collectibles, photographs. It is a mistake to think that such products are outdated and no longer used in everyday life. Modern wood models are able to organically fit into any interior and become a decoration of the kitchen.

Peculiarities

Wooden sideboard is a piece of furniture designed to be placed not only in the kitchen, but also in the living room. For different types of premises, manufacturers offer several varieties of such pieces of furniture:

  • standard;
  • sideboard;
  • showcase.

Traditional models are installed mainly in the kitchen. As a rule, they have lower drawers, closed with opaque blank doors, and an upper zone visually reminiscent of a glazed display case. There are lockers equipped with a niche with a table top. You can also find completely deaf sideboards on sale. Such products are intended for storing various kitchen utensils, spices and food products.

Sideboards are the most suitable furniture for arranging a living room. This is a type of sideboard that includes a lower cabinet with a different number of fixed doors and an upper cabinet with sliding glass doors. He has no niche. Most sideboard models are much wider than classic sideboards.

The dining area is often equipped with display cabinets. The main feature of this furniture is the presence of open or glazed shelves, to which direct access is provided. Such display cases are intended for displaying tableware and various decorative items.

Wood furniture has a number of advantages. She:

  • easy to use;
  • due to special impregnations and external coatings, it is ideal for use in the kitchen;
  • suitable for dividing space into zones;
  • contributes to the organization of the workplace in the kitchen.

Natural wood products also have some disadvantages. For example, despite its size, this furniture is considered unacceptable. Wooden sideboards are not suitable for every interior style, and this must be taken into account. Most of the models are large and take up a lot of space, which is why they are “unprofitable” to place them in small kitchens.

Another significant drawback is the high cost. Wood products, especially from valuable wood species, will not be cheap to buyers.

Buffets differ in several ways. For example, in size. Manufacturers offer both massive solutions for spacious rooms and small-sized options for miniature rooms. Large-sized models outwardly resemble sideboards, and small ones are elongated pencil cases with cabinets and doors. Miniature solutions have small dimensions of width and depth.

Depending on the design, the furniture can be equipped with or without legs. Supports can be simple (round, square or rectangular), ornate or threaded. Most often, manufacturers equip this furniture with long legs to ensure ease of cleaning and mopping. The number of supports varies depending on the model.There are solutions with 4 or 6 legs.

Buffets are also classified based on configuration. They are linear (standard) or angular. Each of these pieces of furniture has certain characteristics.

Standard

The standard or straight sideboard is designed to be installed along the wall. It is used as an addition to a kitchen unit or installed on the opposite side. Linear cabinets are massive. They can have 1, 2 or 3 edges. The shapes of some models "tend" to rounded. Classic sideboards are monolithic, and they can also be made in the form of upper and lower cabinets connected by side walls.

Linear products are mainly chosen by owners of large kitchens or living rooms. They are not suitable for placement in Khrushchevs.

Angular

Such solutions are designed to be placed in one of the corners of the room. Thanks to their configuration, they do not take up much space. These models are used for zoning work and dining spaces. Often, sideboards with an angular configuration are attached to a kitchen set. With the right style, design and color, these pieces of furniture will look like a whole.

Angular variations are recommended for owners of small kitchens.

Materials (edit)

Various wood species are used for the manufacture of wooden sideboards. Such products are solid, they will add solidity to any interior. Consider the tree species from which most of the models are made.

  1. Pine. Solid pine products are white, beige or brown. The wood is easy to process, adheres well. A product made from pine is usually varnished or finished with a harder wood veneer.
  2. Oak. Expensive and at the same time one of the most durable types of wood. Has a beautiful texture and natural decorative effect. Oak sideboards are resistant to decay.
  3. Ash. The material is plastic (after steaming), it bends well and practically does not crack during drying. The disadvantage of ash is the difficulty in polishing.
  4. Red tree. This material, along with beech, is classified as an elite wood. Mahogany sideboards combine elegance, aesthetics and practicality. They are distinguished by increased strength, resistance to various adverse factors and durability.

Larch, alder, walnut, birch, hornbeam and other species are also used for the manufacture of sideboards. If the budget is limited, it is best to choose furniture from inexpensive varieties (birch, pine). If you want to focus on luxury and high cost, it is recommended to give preference to products from elite wood.

Styles and design

In order to stylishly decorate a living room or kitchen, it is important to choose all the furniture so that it is in harmony with each other, while being combined with interior items and decor. Sideboards for each stylistic direction will differ in shape, color palette, decor and fittings.

  • Classical. It is characterized by light pastel colors, stucco molding, gilded decor or accessories. Sideboards designed in a classic style are often equipped with golden handles and inserts on the facades. They have an arched structure and are made of valuable wood species.

These buffets are elite, elegant and original. Indoors, they can become the main "highlight" of the interior.

  • Retro. Kitchen cupboards in this style have bright and juicy colors. Such furniture resembles an antique that was popular in the 50s and 60s. The cabinet can be made of artificially aged wood. The finished product is often painted and varnished.
  • Country. This is a style that combines rustic comfort, the severity of lines and shapes, and the absence of decorative elements.

Buffets in this stylistic performance "do not tolerate" the richness of colors, brightness and originality.

  • Provence. This French style has recently become popular. It is characterized by carved elements, forged inserts, monograms. The priority color palette is neutral beige.
  • Modern. Sideboards designed in this style have curved lines and plastic shapes. Furniture should be compact. It is often made from valuable wood species of dark or light shades.

Modernity does not accept sharp corners and straight lines. Sideboards in this style are characterized by streamlined shapes.

  • English. The English-style buffet embodies the exquisite taste of its owners and their individuality. It combines smoothness and curvature of lines, warm natural tones, severity and massiveness. There is nothing superfluous in the design of such furniture. Restraint and conciseness are characteristic of English buffets.

The sideboards can be used in rooms decorated in baroque style, minimalism, loft. There are also several stylistic trends that “cannot be combined” with a wooden sideboard. This is hi-tech, futurism or techno.

Where to install?

Buffets are purchased for arranging kitchens in apartments and country houses, living rooms, in dachas and in studios. In stores, you can find the optimal model for any type of room, including its area and style of decoration. A well-chosen and well-placed sideboard will look appropriate almost everywhere.

On the kitchen

The location of the buffet will directly depend on the characteristics of the kitchen itself. If it is spacious, the wardrobe can be placed opposite the entrance or next to the dining group. If the buffet model is modular, you can install one module in a corner, and the second at a remote distance. If desired, place a compact table, chest of drawers, armchair or sofa between them. If space permits, a linear or corner sideboard can be attached to the headset. When arranging a studio apartment with the help of a sideboard, they often delimit the space, visually dividing it into two functional zones - dining and working.

For elegant zoning, a buffet bar with a folding or stationary counter is suitable.

In the living room

The sideboard in the living room is located near the table. It integrates perfectly into the dining area and helps you make the most of your free space. A sideboard cabinet can become an element that separates the eating area from the resting area. In large living rooms, 2 dimensional sideboards installed opposite each other look interesting (for example, one is installed next to the window opening, and the other near the front door).

If space is limited and there is a free corner, a small corner sideboard can be integrated there.

Beautiful examples

Photos of the interiors of kitchens and living rooms, in which there are buffets, allow you to visually assess the style and functionality of the premises. Here are some beautiful examples illustrating the successful combination of sideboards with some modern and classic styles.

  • The photo shows a classic living room with a sideboard placed in the corresponding style. In this case, all furnishings are selected in uniform colors, which emphasizes the overall style. An elegant sideboard is located next to the dining table. Thanks to the glass doors, it is possible to display the contents of its upper part.
  • The photo below shows a retro kitchen. The centerpiece is the massive blue sideboard. In this case, he stands next to the kitchen unit, increasing the area of the working area for the hostess.

With the right choice, the buffet can take center stage in the kitchen. With its help, designers bring lightness and elegance to the interior, thanks to which furniture that has gone out of fashion is once again becoming in demand.
