Hi-End is usually called exclusive, very expensive equipment for sound reproduction. In its production, non-standard and atypical solutions are usually used: lamp or hybrid hardware, counterperture or horn, or electrostatic acoustic systems. Hi-End as a concept does not fit into any standards.

Peculiarities

Generally speaking, Hi-End acoustics is the same Hi-Fi, but with components that are not used in serial equipment due to their high cost. Also, the concept is traditionally applied to hand made equipment. This is a kind of sphere of individual taste preferences of a dedicated client group, ready to spend serious money on hobbies.

Hi-End is selected based on parts manufacturers and technologies used, but not on technical characteristics. When measuring this sound technique with standard instruments, the results are not so impressive. However, in the process of listening to a specific musical plot, you can feel its huge advantage in comparison with budget counterparts from the Hi-Fi series.

Despite the imperfect electrical parameters, the Hi-End technique brings the listener a maximum of emotions, prompting the listener to go beyond the rigid framework and make non-standard and already unpopular decisions, use outdated radio components, show minimalism with regards to circuitry and other atypical moments aimed at only positive feelings. This is called “warm sound”. Almost every audio set is unique, as the production is piece, not mass. In this area, the role of design is more important, which to some extent may affect the cost of equipment.

Trying to find a balance of harmony and sound, developers often create unique forms. By the way, most Hi-End equipment is made to order in a piece or in very limited quantities. This tactic helps to avoid the appearance of consumer goods. An example of a balance between design and quality is the legendary B&W Nautilus speaker. It has received numerous awards for its sound quality and its distinctive shell-shaped style.

In order for the sound of the entire system to be fully revealed, it is necessary to adhere to many rules: using a filter for power supply, installing acoustics on special pads or podiums (to eliminate resonance). You can position your Hi-End stereo system tastefully without distorting the sound harmony.

The out-of-the-box performance of some speaker systems, designed for better sound, sometimes helps define the style of the room itself. For audiophiles, the interior is tailored to the technique, not in the opposite order.

Model overview

Bowers & Wilkins 685

Absolute crossover minimization. The case of the shelf acoustics is covered with a film, and the front panel is upholstered in a soft velvety fabric. The model sounds clean, with good detail and collected bass. The speaker has an amazing dynamic range, increased expressiveness and bright emotionality.

Chario Syntar 516

Italian technique of the usual classic design, finished with veneer. HDF boards are finished on all sides with natural wood before sawing. This approach makes acoustics more robust and durable. The subsequent assembly is carried out by specialists in Italy by hand. When testing finished specimens, a thorough check is carried out for compliance with all acoustic parameters.

The presence of rubber feet on the bottom of the case ensures efficient operation of the device. The speakers sound soft, unhurried, but clear. Bass of sufficient depth, slightly prevailing in the overall sound plot.

Dynaudio DM 2/7

The design of the column is in the recognizable style of the given company. The thickened front panel dampens body resonances well. The body is finished and muted with high quality veneer. Twitter is equipped with a textile dome impregnated with a special composition.

The column delivers musical material of high quality. The bass is decorated with dignity, it is of the required density. The sound has high detail in the absence of color. At low volume levels, the speaker sounds as flawless as at high volumes.

Magnat Quantum 753

The audio system is of the average price tag, but it looks presentable. The thickened front wall dramatically solves the problem of cabinet resonances. The 30 mm thick podium looks solid, polished as shiny as the front wall. All other surfaces are matt. The bass reflex port is located on the rear panel. The sound of the speakers is good, perfectly conveys the timbre characteristics of instruments and the depth of sounds. Bass depth is average. At low volume, the emotionality of the sound is dulled. A suitable option for the home, but not the best speaker for demanding Hi-End speakers.

Martin Logan Motion 15

The speaker boasts a stunning natural finish and stylish dark steel grille. Under it is a ribbon-type twitter (an indicator of expensive equipment). Aluminum is used for finishing the front panel of the system.

MK Sound LCR 750

The outer casing of all M&K Sound speakers is made in black without additions. The only decoration of the speakers of the American company is the sound according to the highest standards. The sample in question is a compact set of acoustics for home theater. The model is considered the largest speaker in the series (apart from the subwoofer, of course), it does not have a strong bass response due to the closed acoustic design. The expansion of the dynamic range is facilitated by the use of simultaneously mid / low frequency speakers. The silk tweeter dome is encased in durable polymer.

The model in question perfectly reveals the audio material. Nothing interferes with the overall picture. The nuances are clearly audible. Given the lack of emotional color, the speaker does not sound as exciting as other models. The sound depends on the song you are listening to.

PSB Imagine B

Canadians have been offering the Imagine line for several years. PSB had enough time not only to earn fame, but also to receive the Red Dot - a design distinction. There are many positive reviews from experts about the model.

The speaker case has an unusual geometric design. The curved walls add visual and actual strength to the entire structure. The 25mm tweeter in the form of a durable titanium dome looks unusual and strong. High quality natural veneer was used for decoration. The sound is perfectly balanced. Musical compositions are realistic.

Rega RS1

The RS series is the development of the British company Rega. The RS1 is a fairly compact model made from MDF. At the same time, the performance of the speaker system is at a height: high-quality veneer finish, laconic design.

The speakers reproduce timbres in detail, but the light color slightly blurs the transparency of the musical composition. There is a slight lack of uppercase. The sound is delivered openly and sweepingly, the bass is heard neat, but sometimes it seems too lightweight.

Triangle Color Bookshelf

Nice French-made acoustics in a lacquered three-color case (white-red-black). The Color line is distinguished by a catchy and very lively style: a twitter with a titanium membrane, a dust cap resembling a bullet. The bass reflex port is located on the “wrong side” of the column.

The model is distinguished by a very lively sound, as well as improved timbre naturalness. The audio material is delivered naturally. The bass is well-formed and deep. Sometimes it seems that there is too much of it.

How to connect?

In most cases, Hi-End systems are installed and connected in already exploited spaces. This naturally causes some problems for the installers.

  • The speaker locations are clearly predetermined by the owner.
  • The surfaces in the room are finished, they contain various accessories that are justified in relation to the design, but useless and often negatively reflecting the sound of the acoustics.
  • Signal cables have to be routed in the wrong way, but wherever possible.

Independent inexperienced connection of Hi-End components usually entails the following consequences: additional costs for restoration of damaged finishing due to lack of experience in cable laying, purchase of expensive components, sound distortion during playback from vibrations, overheating of power equipment with incorrect placement, etc. As a result - the owner has an effective designer speaker system, which gives reproduction at the level of the "serial" version.

Coordination of room acoustics and Hi-End speaker capabilities is possible only by experienced professionals with the direct participation of the owner.

In the next video, you will find a detailed test of the Sonus Victor SV 400 acoustics.
