Exotic plants are now held in high esteem by Russian gardeners. Actinidia has been pleasing the eyes of many summer residents of Russia with its beauty and fruits for several years. But actinidia is a climbing and tall plant, therefore it requires support for itself.

The need for support

For the correct and full development of actinidia, a trellis is needed. This is due to the fact that, clinging to the support, the plant grows faster. In addition, during the ripening of fruits without support, the plant simply cannot withstand the severity and break. If in the country, in the garden, in the garden winds often walk, this is also a reason to install a trellis for exotic.

If a liana is fixed on a support, then it is already considered an element of design, disguise and decoration of ugly architectural structures or abandoned corners of the garden.

Even young seedlings need support in order for the thermophilic actinidia to have something to rely on.

The formed vine has three types of shoots.

  1. Growth shoots form the basis of the plant. They grow from dormant shoots after 2 years. In length, they can grow up to 3 meters with an immature top, which dies in the cold. These shoots are not suitable for rooting and transplanting.

  2. Mixed shoots that can grow up to a meter in height. Mixed branches are an excellent support for vines, it is on them that the fruits ripen, they can be rooted.

  3. Fruit shoots on annual branches. But these are rather fragile branches: they are not used for rooting, and the fruits ripen perfectly on them.

After pruning, each sprout is fixed on a support, this is how the vine will grow faster.

Varieties

Actinidia is not only considered a useful plant with a lot of vitamins and minerals, it is also an excellent ornamental plant in garden design. This is why many gardeners grow it in their gardens.

The branches of the plant, especially at a young age, are often intertwined, difficult to process, respectively, the yield drops.

You can form a vine on various types of supports.

For this, forged vertical stairs, trellis shields, coarse-mesh metal nets, simple props and wall supports, figured trellis, picket fence, and various wire frames are perfect. It can be either purchased designs or do-it-yourself frames.

Here are examples of hand-made structures:

  • made of stakes, made like a hut;

  • from the netting of the chain-link with the giving of the desired shape;

  • metal frames that are welded according to their own design;

  • all kinds of plastic devices;

  • a frame made of a metal mesh in the form of a certain figurine of an animal or a fairy-tale character;

  • bush holders made of wood or plastic pipes, metal or wooden blocks;

  • arches made of metal and wood, which are able to zone the space;

  • a trellis made of thin timber.

Usually exotics are placed near fences, along outbuildings or walls of a house. It is relevant to use actinidia when breaking down green hedges and sheds, when creating gazebos. Sometimes pergolas, trellises are connected to patios, terraces, verandas and gazebos.

But it is necessary to take such an idea with extreme caution, especially in the northern regions, because for the winter the vine will need to be removed from the support, and in the case of actinidia, this is problematic.

In the garden, the supports do not allow the plant to grow too luxuriantly. With a trellis height of 3 meters, it will be convenient to pick ripe fruits.

How to tie correctly?

The plant lives on average up to 60 years, so it is necessary to build strong structures for it, which would be enough for a long time. To do this, pull several rows of strong wire (galvanized is suitable) between metal posts. The first row can be raised by 50 centimeters, and all subsequent ones - by 100 centimeters.

During the growth period, the shoots formed are fixed on one side of the trellis. Usually, these types of supports are acceptable for regions in the middle lane when forming a plant in open ground. Thus, the branches are evenly illuminated by the sun, and plant and soil care is extremely simple.

In regions with frosty climates, supports are installed, which will subsequently be conveniently laid on the ground. They are made from metal pipes and corners that are inserted into large pipes that are dug into the ground.

They are fastened with bolts into the prepared holes. And in the autumn period, such a support is neatly folded on the ground.

Many people use a T-shaped support, where two rows of metal wire are stretched on the horizontal bar on the sides. In this case, a tent-shaped plant is formed, the peculiar shape of which covers the capricious root system. They also use L- and U-shaped trellises for low-growing varieties and mainly in areas with a warm climate.

Sometimes experienced gardeners in the first year of the growth of exotic plants fix it only with strong stakes, and a year later they begin to build various kinds of supporting structures. At the same time, lianas bushes begin to tie in the second year according to this scheme. Two vines are fixed to the first wire in different directions in a horizontal position. It is with them that the shoulders of the plant begin. This work is best done in the spring.

As soon as the sap flow ends, the weak shoot parts that have formed below the shoulder at the base are eliminated. For 2-3 years, the two main vines can again give fruiting shoots, they must be fixed vertically to the wire. In the future, with a garter and pruning, the main vines are taken to the base. If they are sent to the periphery, then the fruiting of the vines will instantly decrease. It is recommended to distribute all vegetation on the trellis evenly for the best and uniform illumination.

For a garter, twine is most often used. All shoots are fixed with a figure eight. By the time the vine grows, the shoots will entangle the entire metal frame, and the twine under the influence of the sun will weaken its effect, it will not interfere with the thickening and growth of the stems.

Many gardeners know that a plant, with proper care, manages to lignify and entangle all support during the season.

Therefore, it is not necessary to direct the bushes from the support to the trellis, pergola or arbor, otherwise the removal will be painful. The best option would be the annual tying of a trellis up to 3 meters high with strong cords to the horizontal crossbar. In autumn, the cords can be cut and the shoots can be lowered to the ground. This is necessary for the shelter of the plant in the cold regions of Russia.

Actinidia is a useful exotic vine. Any florist can grow it in his personal plot. It is only necessary to correctly select the support for the plant.
