Cutting roses is one of the most popular methods for growing these flowers. Using it, you can get a plant that retains all the characteristics of the mother flower.

What kind of roses can you graft?

Experienced gardeners know that not all garden roses can be cut by cuttings. The following varieties of flowers can be propagated by this method:

  • climbing;

  • floribunda roses;

  • ground cover;

  • miniature.

Many gardeners also manage to successfully propagate Canadian and English roses.

It is very difficult to grow park flowers and shrubs in this way. Hybrid tea roses are not worth trying to cut. Young shoots will still not be able to take root.

Features of the procedure

It is necessary to prepare a rose for propagation in advance. The flower is pre-fed well. This is done in the spring and early summer. Shoots are usually cut in the second half of July or in August. At this time, the plant has already accumulated enough nutrients. Therefore, future cuttings will root perfectly.

Some gardeners also use "winter" cuttings for propagation. They are harvested in the fall. In winter, cuttings can be stored in a cellar or refrigerator. In the right conditions, the plants can be easily preserved until the spring planting. But this method of cutting roses is used less often.

Choose healthy plants for summer cuttings.

Do not cut shoots from lignified or too young flowers.

Before starting work, future cuttings must be carefully examined. They should not show any signs of illness or mechanical damage.

The size of the shoots should be 20-30 centimeters, the thickness should be within 10 mm. Cut the cuttings with a sharp garden pruner or knife. In this case, the cut will be neat. Before use, the instrument is disinfected with boiling water or alcohol.

The lower part of the cut cutting must be cleaned of thorns and foliage. In the upper part, their number must be halved.

Young shoots cannot be transported long distances. It is recommended to root the branches on the first day after cutting.

You can complete the preparation of cuttings by disinfecting them with a solution of potassium permanganate and placing them in a container with a solution of a growth stimulator. For this purpose, usually buy "Kornevin", "Zircon" or similar products. They must be used according to the instructions for use.

A homemade product is also suitable for processing slices.

  1. Honey water. To prepare it, dilute a teaspoon of honey in half a liter of pure water. The product must be natural.
  2. Yeast infusion. Baker's yeast is diluted in warm boiled water. Usually 100 grams of product is added to one liter of water. You can enhance the effectiveness of the infusion by adding a teaspoon of sugar to the container. Dry yeast is not used for the preparation of the infusion.
  3. Aloe juice. Fresh aloe juice can also be used to treat slices. For this, the foliage of the plant must be placed in a blender and chopped. Strain the gruel through cheesecloth. In this juice, the cuttings are left overnight. After that, it is diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 9. After that, the cuttings are placed in a container with a liquid product for a few more hours.

Having prepared the cuttings in this way, you can immediately start germinating them.

The ways

There are several main ways to grow future roses.

In water

This is the easiest way to germinate rose cuttings. First you need to boil the water. After that, it is cooled. Charcoal must be added to the container. This helps to disinfect the liquid.

Next, cuttings are placed in the water. This must be done carefully. Their foliage should not come into contact with water. Otherwise, the plant may start to rot. After that, the container must be covered with a transparent film, having made holes in it for the trunks of flowers.

In this form, the container with cuttings is sent to a darkened place. Once every 2-3 days, the roots of the shoots should be examined. In this case, the water needs to be changed. After about 20 days, a new root system will begin to form at the edges of the cuttings.

The only disadvantage of this grafting method is that, due to a lack of oxygen, the roots of plants remain very fragile. Therefore, it is very easy to damage them during transplantation.

In potatoes

This method of growing roses is fairly well known. It is recommended to use potatoes of medium or large size in the work. All the "eyes" must be carefully cut out of the tubers. A small hole is cut in the center of the potato. It should not be wider than the diameter of the cutting.

Roses are inserted into the potatoes prepared in this way with pointed ends. Prepared tubers with flowers are transferred to containers with loose soil. They are carefully added and covered with a bottle.

Plants need to be ventilated regularly. Do this for 10-15 minutes. Once every 5 days, cuttings are watered with water and sugar or honey. You can root a plant in this way very quickly. After 15-18 days, the stalk can be transplanted to a permanent place.

Aloe juice packet

In this way, you can propagate a bush or garden rose. Using aloe juice, the flower will germinate very quickly.

First you need to fill the bag with sphagnum moss. Greens should be spilled with aloe juice mixed with water in a ratio of 1 to 9. Cuttings are placed in the bag. Its edges are tied tightly. After that, the package is hung on the window.

There is no need to water the flowers. It will be possible to plant them in open ground in 20-25 days.

In the newspaper

Burrito cuttings are popular with many gardeners. For wrapping, newspaper sheets or toilet paper are usually used. Instead, cuttings can also be wrapped in napkins. The main thing is not to wet them too much.

Cuttings are folded in piles of several pieces. After that, they are tightly wrapped with damp paper. The bundles are placed in a plastic bag. He is immediately sent to a dark place. From time to time, packages of cuttings are unrolled. At the same time, the paper is moistened with a spray bottle. If rot appears on one of the cuttings over time, it will need to be removed. The rest of the shoots will have to be rinsed under warm water, and then wrapped again in paper.

Soon, roots will appear on the cuttings. When they reach 4-6 centimeters in length, they can be transplanted into open ground.

By sprouting cuttings by wrapping in damp paper, even those varieties of roses that are considered difficult to root can be bred.

In sand

The unusual method is suitable for cutting most varieties of roses. The process of germinating cuttings in sand consists of the following steps.

  1. To begin with, a container with drainage holes is filled with clean sand.
  2. You need to put green branches in it.
  3. The sand must be sprayed with a spray bottle.
  4. After that, the container is moved to a bright place.

Roses planted in the sand are watered daily. After a month, making sure that each branch has taken root, the flowers can be transplanted into the open ground.

In vermiculite

This propagation method can be used by owners of indoor roses. First, fill a plastic cup with vermiculite. You can buy it at a gardening store. Then the "soil" is watered with warm water. Having separated the green shoot from the main bush, it is placed in a glass.

The container with the sprout is covered with a bag and sent to the windowsill. The plant is watered only 3-4 times for the entire time, because vermiculite remains wet for a long time.It will be possible to transplant the cuttings into a new pot with nutritious soil in about a month.

In coconut substrate

This method of rooting roses has a lot in common with the previous one. In this way, indoor flowers are also usually propagated. The green scion is placed in a pot of soil mixed with coconut fiber. You don't need to cover the flower. But you need to water it every few days.

After a while, the rose will take root in this pot. There is no need to transplant a young rose anywhere in the future. It will grow well in a pot of nutrient medium.

In a banana

This is an unusual but very effective method of growing roses.

  1. Without separating the stalk from the plant, an incision must be made on it with a clean knife, removing part of the bark.
  2. This part of the plant should be wrapped in a banana peel.
  3. A neck of a plastic bottle cut from a plastic bottle and cut from one side is attached on top.
  4. The free space between the plastic and the peel is filled with moistened soil.
  5. Further, this structure is fixed with plastic clamps.
  6. After about two weeks, it is removed. The rose is carefully cut.
  7. A stalk prepared in such an unusual way is planted in the ground.

Any garden rose can be rooted in a banana.

In the garden

For planting in the garden, it is worth using short cut branches. For rooting roses, you need to choose a suitable site. It should be in partial shade. This is due to the fact that roses need light for normal development. However, they grow poorly in direct sunlight.

Having chosen a suitable place, the cuttings must be planted in the ground at an angle. You can have 2-3 cuttings nearby. Immediately after planting, they should be watered abundantly with settled water and covered with a jar or a cut plastic bottle.

For the winter, the container is estimated with dry foliage. It will be possible to remove the shelter only after stable heat has been established. Usually, such favorable conditions can only be expected at the end of May.

In the future, roses can be planted. The main thing is to do it carefully.

Care of cuttings

When planting plants in summer or autumn, it is important to take into account the timing of transplanting cuttings. It is very important that the seedling has time to settle down in a new place, but has not yet begun to actively grow. Rooting the cuttings in the open field takes about one and a half months. Therefore, it is most convenient to plant cuttings in late August or September. A more accurate time for planting plants in a permanent place must be chosen, focusing on the local climate.

Instructions for planting germinated cuttings in a new plot are as follows.

  1. First, the soil must be loosened. Next, on the site, you need to dig the required number of holes. The distance between them depends on the varietal characteristics of the roses. If these are undersized bushes, it should be within 30 centimeters, if tall - 50 cm, if climbing - 100 cm or more.
  2. Next, the stalk is removed from the container or bag. They do this carefully, trying not to damage the roots.
  3. After that, the twigs are placed in the holes, and covered with a mixture of soil and compost.
  4. Having finished transplanting the cuttings, they are watered with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. This helps to decontaminate the soil.

If the buds on the branches have already hatched, the cuttings should be shaded.

In the future, young roses are looked after in the same way as adult plants. Flowers are watered and inspected on a regular basis. The soil next to the stems is loosened from time to time. At first, this must be done very carefully so as not to damage the roots of the flowers.

Flowers are usually covered for the winter. To protect the roses, it is best to install arcs over them. They are covered with a film or any other covering material. They remove it from the arcs only after the arrival of heat.

In general, cuttings are a great way to propagate your favorite roses. By adhering to simple rules, flowers can be grown in any area.
