Gartenfreude is a rose brought to us from Germany. This variety belongs to the ground cover, looks great on flower beds and rose gardens, does not require special care.

Breeding history of the variety

The year of selection was 1999, it was then that domestic gardeners had the opportunity to grow Gartenfreude on their plots. The rose of this variety has many synonyms of names, including it is known as Toscana.

Description of the variety

Gartenfreude has an outstanding strawberry red color. The color is saturated, attracts with its unusual shade.

The flowers are small, usually not more than 3 cm in diameter. Gartenfreude's rose is densely double, up to 75 petals appear on one bud. All flowers are located in inflorescences, on one stem there can be up to 10 of them.

Gartenfreude's aroma is weak, but perceptible.

Rose bushes of this variety grow wide, branched. The height of the shrub can reach 600 mm, the diameter is usually not more than 700 mm in Gartenfreude.

The foliage is formed on the bushes of a dark green shade, small. Gloss is excellent on the surface.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the advantages of the Gartenfreude rose variety, one can single out its high resistance to drought and high humidity. This bush does not fade in the sun.

Gartenfreude has no shortcomings, only the absence of a strong aroma can be noted, but here everyone has their own.

Flowering features

The Gartenfreude rose blooms all season, quite abundantly. This variety belongs to the type of re-flowering.

Use in landscape design

Gartenfreude is often grown for cutting. This variety looks good in standard form. From the flower, attractive hedges are obtained, they create magnificent arches, gazebos. Looks like Gartenfreude in single landings.

Landing

For planting Gartenfreude, it is better to choose a sunny place, without a draft. The soil for this plant should be loose and rich in nutrients. Planting density 5 pieces per square meter.

Gartenfreude's rose can be planted as single bushes, especially in small gardens, and hedges can be created, while the distance between the bushes should be 0.6-1.5 m.Wishing to create a dense planting, this figure is reduced to 0.4-0, 6 m.

Before planting Gartenfreude, it is good to leave the roots of roses in water for 3-4 hours, then start planting.

When planting in the fall, the root system can be trimmed so that its length is 20-25 cm. If the procedure is carried out in the spring, we remove only broken or damaged roots.

We place the bushes in a previously prepared planting hole so that the roots fit into it freely, and the graft site is 3-5 cm below the ground surface. The soil around the main trunk is well compacted and then watered abundantly.

In autumn, around the planted Gartenfreude roses, we shovel the soil by 20-25 cm to protect it from frost. Before winter (in November) rose bushes can be covered with coniferous branches.

Growing and care

Mulching the soil, for example, with bark, which restricts the growth of weeds, prevents the loss of moisture and the drying out of the earth, is very beneficial for the growth and flowering of Gartenfreude roses.

This variety grows well on slightly acidic soils (pH 5.5-6.5), but also does well on alkaline soils (pH above 7).

You should not plant Gartenfreude roses on the south side, as the very high temperatures in summer favor the appearance of spider mites. Roses of this variety also feel bad in the immediate vicinity of large trees and shrubs. The need to compete for nutrients and water leads to the fact that the shoots grow and bloom poorly.

Watering and feeding

We fertilize the rose bushes of Gartenfreude only until mid-July, using mineral fertilizing or organic matter in the form of rotted manure, compost, bone meal.

If there is a need to water the Gartenfreude roses, we moisten the bushes from below, without soaking the leaves and flowers, preferably every 3-4 days, with plenty of water (20 l / m2).

Pruning

If we are talking about pruning Gartenfroyde roses, then cosmetic procedures in this aspect are limited to the regular removal of dead and diseased shoots that grow below the graft site. This is necessary to prevent the uncontrolled growth of the shrub, since then flowers will not appear on the rose, and nutrients will go to the development of foliage.

Pruning in the fall makes the plant more susceptible to cold temperatures in winter, so it is best not to do it. In mid-April, dead and lignified shoots are cut out, as well as those that cause too much thickening of the Gartenfreude bush. When it comes to pruning technique, always cut diagonally at a height of about 1 cm above the buds.

Frost resistance and preparation for winter

The Gartenfreude rose has a high degree of frost resistance. This flower belongs to zone 6, so it can withstand up to -23 degrees Celsius.

Diseases and pests

Gartenfreude has genetically excellent immunity to many diseases inherent in roses. The bush is immune to powdery mildew and black spot.

Prevention is the foundation of effective protection. Therefore, we try to remove and destroy the affected leaves and shoots from Gartenfreude shrubs.

The spraying procedure is carried out in calm weather, early in the morning or in the evening - before or after the flight of bees. Spraying against fungal diseases is performed on August 15. Processing at a later date will limit the development of diseases in the next season.

You can use dishwashing liquid, soap for prevention. For aphids and other harmful insects, it is better to use a solution of potassium permanganate or spraying with neem oil in the spring.

Reproduction

There are many ways to propagate Gartenfreude roses. The seed method is least often used, and there is a special reason for this - it is almost impossible to preserve the characteristics of the mother plant.

Experienced gardeners divide Gartenfreude shrubs, but they do it with great care, because in order not to kill a bush, but to make two out of it, you must first check whether the root system is sufficiently developed. The bushes are separated by autumn, but a few months before the onset of cold weather, so that the Gartenfreude rose can begin and adapt in a new place.

And you can also cut cuttings and preserve them for spring, or you can plant them in the ground under banks or at home in pots. When the first three leaves appear on them, the potted plants are taken out into the ground with the onset of spring, and those that were under the jar are simply opened.
