Long flowering, enchanting aroma, original shades - all this is the Arthur Bell rose. The article will discuss the cultivation and care, reproduction, use of this variety in landscape design.

Breeding history of the variety

This variety was bred in Ireland back in 1955. The main breeding research was carried out by the McGredy company. The experiments were based on polyanthus and hybrid tea varieties. The result is a variety of roses with long flowering and the finest aroma.

Arthur Bell is not listed in the Russian register, but gardeners have long liked this variety and has been successfully cultivated on personal plots.

Description of the variety

The bush of this rose variety is moderately spreading, up to 60 centimeters wide, and reaches 0.8-0.9 m in height. The plant is considered a standard plant due to the fact that the lower part of the trunk is bare, and the shoots are powerful and spreading. But the top is pretty curvy. The leaf plates are rather large and smooth, dark green in color. The ends of the leaves are pointed with a distinct pattern. This variety is distinguished by an abundance of thorns.

Among other varietal characteristics, it is worth noting the following:

  • excellent resistance to precipitation;
  • conditional resistance to fungal diseases;
  • long-term, including repeated flowering;
  • excellent winter hardiness (up to -30 degrees).

Advantages and disadvantages

Most gardeners note such positive aspects of the variety as subtle aroma, beauty of the flower, and its other decorative qualities. It is also worth noting that the rose tolerates rainy weather well, without opening its buds, it perfectly survives severe frosts. Its long bloom is pleasing to the eye throughout the summer. The variety is practically not affected by parasites and fungal diseases.

But a flowering plant has its drawbacks. Among them:

  • shelter is required in many areas of Siberia;
  • forms a large number of thorns on the shoots;
  • may fade in the sun.

Flowering features

The flower stalks of the bush are very powerful, very thorny, they do not break even in a hurricane wind. Arthur Bell has racemose inflorescences, where from 1 to 3 flowers with a diameter of 8-10 centimeters develop on each shoot. Semi-double flowers: petals are arranged in several rows, up to 15-20 pieces.

The color of the inflorescences is from golden to bright yellow with a yellowish tint along the central part and cream shades along the edge. If the sun's rays are constantly falling on the bushes, then the petals fade, changing their color to lemon-cream. The stamens are crimson.

Arthur Bell blooms throughout the summer, starting to bloom from early June to early October. In the south of Russia, the variety blooms until mid-November.

Use in landscape design

Due to the compactness of the bush, this variety is used in group and single plantings. Also, the rose goes well in the beds next to the lawn. Often the plant is planted for decorative purposes next to a gazebo, terrace, at the entrance to a house or to a plot.

Other design uses include:

  • planting around the house;
  • plantings of several bushes;
  • growing a standard bush with a support;
  • single plantings near the sidewalk, path, bridge.

Growing regions

Due to their winter hardiness, rose bushes are grown everywhere: from the south of Russia to Siberia and the Urals. The only thing is that in the northern regions, the variety needs shelter for the winter.

Landing

It is best to purchase seedlings at trusted retail outlets. Planting operations should be planned for the second half of spring, and the planting site should be carefully selected taking into account the optimal sun-shade ratio.

Arthur Bell prefers a fertile, breathable potting mix with a slightly acidic reaction. Sandstones, sandstones and loams are considered the best option. When choosing a flower bed for a rose, it is worth excluding the presence of stagnant moisture, drafts and strong winds.

It is better to start preparing for planting work from the end of April - the first half of May, at a time when the soil warms up to +10 degrees. Beforehand, the landing site is dug onto a shovel bayonet, compost or humus is added at the rate of 5 kilograms per square meter.

Planting seedlings consists of several steps.

  1. It is necessary to dig holes 50 * 50 centimeters in size, keeping a distance of 50 cm from each other.
  2. At the bottom, you need to lay out a drainage layer of small pebbles.
  3. Pre-soak the roots in a growth stimulant solution for about a couple of hours, after which it is recommended to cut the root system by 25-30 centimeters.
  4. After that, we send the bush to the hole, straighten the roots and sprinkle it with earth.
  5. Around the stem, it is necessary to compact the soil so that the root collar is three centimeters above the ground.
  6. The soil must be thoroughly watered, and the trunk circle must be mulched.
  7. For the first two weeks, the planted bushes should be shaded.

Growing and care

For subsequent care, we advise you to adhere to the recommendations for watering, feeding, pruning and preparing for the winter.

Watering and feeding

It is necessary to water the bush regularly, especially at the time of laying the buds. Regular watering - once a week with plenty of warm water, and in drought, you need to increase the frequency of watering up to twice a week. When watering, it is best to direct the stream of water to the root rather than to the green mass. After watering, if necessary, the soil is loosened, getting rid of excess weeds.

Fertilization is carried out several times per season: with the onset of April - about 20 g of urea, during budding - 25 g of potassium sulfate, 40 g of superphosphate. A month later, top dressing should be repeated with the same composition.

Pruning

Pruning is a regular procedure throughout the season. As they wilt, the peduncles are constantly removed. In spring, they get rid of frozen and diseased bushes. Formative pruning is practiced for the first three years.

Frost resistance and preparation for winter

Arthur Bell is a hardy bush, but young seedlings need winter shelter.

With the onset of the second half of October, it is necessary to cut off all the shoots to a height of 30 centimeters. By the diameter of the trunk circle, you should carefully dig up the soil mixture with the addition of potassium sulfate and superphosphate. Then mulch the circle with layers of needles, leaves and sawdust. The final shelter is agrospan or burlap.

Diseases and pests

Basically, the rose is not susceptible to fungal diseases. But some rose growers recommend sanitizing the bushes at the end of March with drugs such as Skor, Fundazol, Hom, Maxim, Abiga-Peak.

To get rid of various kinds of pests, insecticides such as "Fitoverm", "Aktara", "Match", "Karbofos", "Inta-Vir" are used.

All sanitary treatments are carried out in the evening.

Reproduction

Like all other varieties of roses, Arthur Bell is propagated by grafting, dividing the bush and grafting.

Cuttings are best cut in May from green shoots up to 8 centimeters. Then they are cleaned of foliage, a sharp cut is made and sent to a growth stimulator for a day. After all operations, they are planted in the soil prepared in advance. For reliability, they are closed with a plastic dome, regularly watering. And with the onset of July, they are planted in a permanent place.

You can start dividing the bush in April.It must be dug up, divided into parts, then planted in new places, everything must be watered abundantly.

With the arrival of summer, the bushes are vaccinated. To do this, select the desired green shoot and prune the bark layer. T-shaped incision on the rootstock tightly squeeze the shoot and fix it with a special tape.
