The varietal characteristics of the climbing rose Antik make it one of the best climbers on the market today. The plant perfectly tolerates the sun, does not fade in the heat. Sufficiently resistant to moisture. Blooms profusely all summer.

Breeding history of the variety

This variety is the result of the selection of employees of the German company Kordes. Rose Antik (Antike) was bred in 1988. The rose of the Grand Hotel variety served as the basis for its origin. Climber is also known as Antique 89, KORdalen and Antique.

Description of the variety

The main attention in the description of a rose is always paid to its buds, because it is the most beautiful and decorative part of the plant. The goblet buds of the Antique rose are painted in a rich crimson-cream color, the flower itself is a delicate creamy-white color. The bicolor cupped flowers with a high center are effectively complemented by a carmine-red border.

The flowers are quite large, they grow up to 10 cm in diameter. The number of petals reaches 30-40 pieces. One stem usually grows up to 3-5 flowers. They have a subtle aroma with subtle fruity notes.

On a powerful, vigorous bush 280-300 cm high and 100 cm wide, strong foliage. The color of glossy dense leaves is dark green. The powerful root system penetrates deep into the soil. Straight lashes are tough, but flexible enough, covered with small thorns. The Antik variety is recommended for growing in regions with a temperate climate.

Advantages and disadvantages

The disadvantages of this variety include the slow growth of shoots. It will be possible to fully appreciate the beauty of the plant only 3 years after planting in an open area.

The advantage of the rose is disease resistance and winter hardiness. The plant is able to quickly recover even after severe cold weather.

Flowering features

The Antique rose has a long flowering period. Abundant bloom lasts from June to November. 3-5 inflorescences with large buds are formed on the shoots.

After the first lush flowering, with proper pruning, the re-emergence of equally bright flowers follows. The buds are formed before the autumn frost.

In the first year, the flowering is not too lush, but with good care it will become more and more attractive every year.

Use in landscape design

Climber roses are in demand when forming decorative compositions in the garden. Luxurious, lush blooming lashes can transform any nondescript corner. For three decades, the Antique rose has been immensely popular with gardeners around the world.

Landing

Planting density 1.0-2.0 meters between bushes.

Growing and care

Climbing roses are considered unpretentious plants. Most of all, open sunny areas are suitable for them. The soil for growing climbers needs acidic, fertile and loose.

Antique is undesirable to often transplant, there is a risk of injury to the roots. Planting in the ground is carried out in April. Or in the fall, when there is a supply of several weeks before the first frost.

The soil on the site needs to be dug up, and a hole 0.5 meters deep must be prepared. If planting is done in clay soil, it is necessary to form a 15 cm drainage layer. When planting in sandy soil, it is recommended to add 10 cm of clay soil.

It is important to carefully examine the seedling, shorten the roots, completely remove the lifeless areas. Spread the roots in the hole and cover with earth. The plant needs to be watered abundantly enough, and the soil should be poured over the already settled earth. The area around the bush is mulched.

Climbers must be planted, observing a distance of 0.5 m from the planned support. Roots need a lot of room to grow.

Watering and feeding

In the first year of life, roses will have to be watered often, and in the second season, the number of waterings is reduced, but they should be more abundant. During the vegetative period, plant feeding is carried out 4-5 times. For this, organic and mineral fertilizers are used.

Pruning

To give the Antique bush the desired shape, the branches are hung in a fan-like manner on a support horizontally and vertically. Pruning is carried out in the spring, while dried lashes are cut to the very ground. The optimal ratio of shoots is considered to be 3-7 main and up to 3 young branches of the last year. The lashes need to be shortened by one third, and the lateral shoots up to the 3rd bud.

Diseases and pests

Rose Antik has a high resistance to diseases and many pests. Including powdery mildew and black spot. But the culture can suffer from damage by spider mites, aphids and leaf rollers, thrips, and rose sawfly. Insecticides and folk remedies such as soap solution or tobacco infusion will help get rid of them.

The most dangerous of the diseases is gray rot. Irrigation of bushes with solutions will cope with it: 3% iron sulfate, 2% copper sulfate or 3% Bordeaux liquid.

Reproduction

Climber roses can be propagated in several ways:

  • sowing seeds;

  • seating layering;

  • rooting cuttings;

  • grafting on rose hips.

Cutting is the easiest and best results. Cuttings are cut from flowering or flowering shoots from June to August. They should have from 2 or more internodes. The lower cut is made at an angle of 45 degrees under the kidney, the upper cut is straight, 5 cm from the kidney.

The lower leaves are cut off from the cutting, and the upper ones are cut to the middle.

The cuttings are deepened by 1 cm into sand or into a sandy-earth mixture. All manipulations are carried out in a lighted area, but protected from direct sunlight;

It is important to cover each stalk with a glass jar. Water them without removing the cans, focusing on the condition of the soil.

By the onset of cold weather, the cuttings do not have time to root well. In the fall, they will have to be carefully dug up and stored in a cool room, sprinkling the roots with wet sand. Leaving cuttings for the winter in the ground is permissible, but only if it is well insulated. With the onset of spring and suitable weather, the seedlings are planted in a greenhouse.

Rooted cuttings can only be opened after a month. A transplant to a permanent place is carried out next spring.

Frost resistance and preparation for winter

Rose Antik has high frost resistance, however, in cold climates, the bushes need shelter and insulation for the winter. The lashes are placed on a straw support, covered with two layers of nonwoven fabric. In the spring, the shelter is removed, but gradually, so that the plant has time to get used to being in open sunlight.

Review overview

Antique is an ideal choice for vertical gardening. It will beautifully braid any fence and wall. But thick and hard shoots are unsuitable for creating arched structures.

Growing roses of this variety requires a certain amount of time and effort from the gardener. But if you follow all the recommendations, you can get an abundant flowering of buds of fabulous colors.
