Floribunda rose Amsterdam (Amsterdam) is considered one of the best varieties for landscape planting. It is distinguished by an intense rise in height, forms strong and sturdy bushes, blooms with lush clusters. This variety has several sports with petals that differ from the standard color.

Breeding history of the variety

Rose of Dutch selection. Received in 1972. The selection was carried out by the Verschuren nursery.

Description of the variety

Rose Amsterdam belongs to vigorous varieties with an average bush height of 80-100 cm and a width of 60 cm. Leaves on straight branches of medium size, dark green, with shades of brown and red. Branched bushes with strong shoots.

The flowers of this variety are semi-double, with a weak aroma, not very large. The diameter of the blossoming corolla does not exceed 4-6 cm. The buds of the Amsterdam rose are dark red, ovoid. The blossoming flower is cup-shaped, of classical shape. Colored in a bright orange-red tone.

Advantages and disadvantages

Amsterdam is an exceptionally beautiful, decorative rose with a lot of advantages. Its flower with bright petals does not fade in the sun, thus avoiding discoloration. The buds have very good rain resistance, they do not rot even in cloudy weather. In addition, this rose is not afraid of drought and recurrent frosts; with proper agricultural technology, it blooms violently all summer.

The disadvantages of the variety are minimal. These include a long, up to 3 years, formation of the root system. At this time, there is no need to wait for intense flowering. Strong pruning before winter is very poorly tolerated by bushes. The flower may die.

Flowering features

The bushes form flowers from June to September, continuously and abundantly.

Use in landscape design

This rose variety is considered suitable for cutting. Can be grown as a standard form. Well suited for planting in flowerpots. Bushes in border plantings look spectacular. Floribunda Amsterdam is ideal for landscaping garden and park areas, small backyards.

In mixed plantings with other perennials, this rose thrives. The variety, due to the bright color of the flowers, looks advantageous against the background of taller conifers. In containers, Amsterdam perfectly copes with the role of the main element of decor in the space of the veranda or terrace, at the entrance to the house.

Growing regions

The variety is well adapted to Russian climatic conditions. In most regions, it is grown outdoors.

Landing

It is customary to plant Amsterdam roses in the sun, choosing areas with well-drained, loose and fertile soil - black earth or alumina. The optimum acidity level is neutral. Planting density should not exceed 3-5 plants per 1 m2. It is better to select vegetative plants 2-3 years old with a closed root system. The site must be well protected from wind and other external threats.

Growing and care

In the process of growing, Amsterdam roses need to be given regular attention. After planting in the ground in the root area, they are kept loose, mulched to reduce the number of weeds. It is especially important to do this during the period when the bushes are growing the root system.

Watering and feeding

A feature of this variety of roses can be called a low need for watering. The bushes are irrigated every 8-10 days, in the heat at intervals of 2-4 days. Watering is carried out so that water gets to the roots without compacting the topsoil. The earth under the bushes after it must be loosened.

The feeding schedule should be taken more seriously. With the beginning of the flowering period, roses will benefit from potassium sulfate and complex mineral mixtures in liquid form. In spring and autumn, nitrogen fertilization is possible.

Pruning

In the fall, after falling leaves, the bushes are cut by 1/3. In the spring, they are cleaned of old, dried, broken branches. They shorten the shoots more strongly, leaving some of the strongest ones. In the summer, faded parts of the plant are removed. Wild growth is also necessarily eliminated.

Frost resistance and preparation for winter

Amsterdam is a cold-resistant rose. According to the USDA classification, it belongs to the 6th zone. Withstands a drop in atmospheric temperatures down to -23 degrees. The construction of a shelter in the winter is mandatory.

Diseases and pests

This variety of roses is practically not affected by fungal diseases. Medium resistance to powdery mildew. The immunity to black spot is high.

Reproduction

The easiest way to get new seedlings of roses in Amsterdam is by cuttings. With vegetative propagation, all the characteristics of the variety are preserved. Cuttings are carried out from the beginning to the middle of summer, selecting the shoots of the last year with a semi-lignified structure. For rooting, the middle segments of the branches are selected.

Review overview

Many enthusiastic gardeners are happy to plant a rose Amsterdam on their site. This variety is considered very decorative, and the small diameter of the corollas is generously compensated by intensive budding. Tall and strong bushes quickly take root in a new location in the open field. In general, they are rated as very resilient, practically unaffected by frost, wind, sunlight and disease. In their reviews, summer residents mention that this variety grows well even without top dressing and preventive sanitation against pests.

Amsterdam collects many compliments for its beauty. Bright red petals with salmon shades are collected in a corolla tightly, keep their shape well in a bouquet cut. Summer residents note that in the bright sun these roses do not fade, but darken.

There are practically no negative reviews about this variety of roses. But there are references to low-quality planting material. Often, under the guise of an original variety, more terry sports are sold, unpredictable in their development, often with weaker immunity. The downside is that the rose is quite demanding to care for, without pruning, the timing and intensity of flowering is noticeably reduced.
