The hybrid tea group is one of the most popular varieties of modern garden roses. These roses are distinguished by a continuous flowering period and outstanding flower qualities. A bright representative of the species is the Albrecht Durer variety.

Breeding history of the variety

Rose Albrecht Durer was bred by the famous German breeder Hans-Jürgen Evers (Hans Jürgen Evers, 1940-2007). The variety appeared in 1996 under the registration number TAN96145, was patented in 2000, and in 2002 appeared before the general public at an international flower exhibition as Albrecht Dürer, becoming the namesake of the great master of the German Renaissance.

The originator of the variety is the large European pink nursery Rosen-Tantau (Germany), which Hans-Jürgen Ewers took over in 1985, taking over from Matthias Tantau Jr., the son of the founder of the company. Today, continuing his father's work, the brand is led by Christian Evers.

Since 2011, the Albrecht Durer variety has received an international registration and quickly gained popularity throughout Europe. The number of fans of this wonderful rose in Russia is growing every year.

Description of the variety

Albrecht Durer is a hybrid tea rose that blooms intensively throughout the season with a medium-sized bush and large double flowers of an amazing color, consisting of dark and light shades of pink and peach. The variety shows good resistance to the vagaries of the weather and temperature extremes, has good immunity to a number of diseases.

The height of the bush usually does not exceed 1 m, rarely reaches 1.2 m. The plant is lush, actively branches, about 60 cm in girth. There are not very many leaves, they are rich green, leathery, with gloss.

Inflorescences of low-flowered type. Roses with a diameter of 10-12 cm (up to 15 cm) are rounded, densely double, form a bowl densely stuffed with petals with a hidden core. The color is uneven, changing from a bright orange-red at the bud stage to a lighter salmon with a dark pink border at the adult flower. The saturation of the tone also depends on the average temperature of the season, but much less than that of many varieties with a pastel color: in a sultry summer, the tone will be only slightly paler than on cool days.

The aroma is pleasant, with a distinct sweetness and fruitiness, of medium intensity.

Advantages and disadvantages

The variety has a number of excellent qualities:

  • great appearance, large size and unusual color of the flower;
  • flowers are heat-resistant and practically do not fade from sunlight;
  • the Albrecht Durer variety is universal, suitable for various landscape design tasks;
  • flowers stay on the bush for a very long time and stand in cut form.

Disadvantages:

  • the bush is gaining strength and growth for a long time, the first two years it blooms very weakly, increasing the root mass;
  • only 1-2 roses are formed on one stem; in terms of flowering abundance, it is inferior to the Augusta Luise variety;
  • in terms of resistance to diseases and pests, it also loses to some varieties, sometimes it is affected by rot, but it recovers well after treatment.

Flowering features

Rose Albrecht Durer belongs to the re-flowering varieties. By this sign, the variety resembles the flowering of a group of old (historical) garden roses.Albrecht Durer roses bloom from mid-June and delight the eye throughout the summer, and the flowers last for a very long time, without flying around or fading. The bushes bloom profusely throughout the season, but the first flowering will be the most intense.

Use in landscape design

This variety is suitable for placement in all types of flower beds, used in single and group plantings. Often this rose is used to decorate the entrance to a house or plot. You can plant bushes along the curb, hedge an alley with a hedge, or combine this variety with other plants in a mixborder.

The Albrecht Durer rose is most often grown in the form of a bush, but if desired, it is possible to form a standard tree from it.

Landing

The ideal place for this rose will be a sunny area of the garden, or one where there will be light partial shade in the afternoon. The soil should be fertile, slightly acidic and light. The structure of clay soil is facilitated by the addition of peat, turf, sand.

Landing is carried out at the end of April-May. In a prepared pit 50-60 cm deep, drainage and organic feeding are placed in layers. The root collar of the plant should be at ground level or slightly recessed.

Autumn plantings are carried out in mid-September, so that the plants take root before the cold weather.

Growing and caring

Caring for this rose is simple, it includes the obligatory loosening of the soil, removing weeds, mulching the trunk circle, fertilizing the soil, watering, pruning.

Watering and feeding

Water the rose with settled warm water, especially abundantly in the hot summer months (15-20 liters under the bush, 2 times every 7 days). By August, watering is reduced, in the fall they stop.

Top dressing is required. Nitrogen compounds are introduced in the spring, phosphorus-potassium mineral complexes in the summer.

Pruning

The main pruning takes place in the spring: shoots frozen from frost are removed, a bush is formed, and the tops are trimmed. In the summer, roses that have faded after flowering are cut off, stimulating a new wave of buds. During autumn sanitary pruning, damaged branches are removed, overgrown shoots are shortened.

Frost resistance and preparation for winter

With frosts down to -7 °, this rose is not even covered. But the winters of the middle lane require the arrangement of a protective shelter: a layer of spruce branches, a frame and a stretched covering material. The USDA classification classifies the variety as zone VI, that is, it is capable of surviving winter under cover with frosts down to -23 °. In Siberia, a thick snow cover will provide additional protection against freezing.

Reproduction

It is possible to propagate a favorite variety by cuttings. After the completion of the first wave of flowering, strong young shoots 15-20 cm long with 2-4 buds are cut. Before germination, the cuttings are kept in a stimulating solution.
