The graceful and very decorative variety of the climbing rose Eyeconic managed to conquer not only European, but also Russian gardeners. Its flowers are compared to hibiscus; during the budding period, the bushes become a real bright accent even in the most well-groomed garden, bringing to it the charm and lightness of the wild Caribbean flora. The variety has shown itself well when grown in a pot culture, here it is grown as a miniature no more than 60 cm high.

Breeding history of the variety

The variety was introduced to the market in 2013. Obtained by Meilland cattery in France. The breeding used subspecies of the wild rose Persica x Hulthemia.

Description of the variety

Aykonik rose bushes are distinguished by their high vigor, reaching a height of 110-80 cm with a width of about 70 cm. The leaves on the plant are light green, glossy, of medium size. The buds are collected in inflorescences, 5-10 on each stem. The bushes are uniform, strong, with moderate foliage, not prone to thickening. The branches are slightly drooping.

Flowers on the bushes are flat-bowl, 8-11 cm in diameter, semi-double. The main color is yellow, the integumentary color is brighter, with golden stamens and a burgundy-red eye. Rose Aykonik belongs to two-color varieties, got its name for the similarity with the pupil and iris of the eye. Her buds are dark yellow, ovoid. The aroma of a blossoming flower is weak, airy and delicate, with citrus notes.

Advantages and disadvantages

The Aykonik rose has many virtues that can impress gardeners. Its main advantages include:

  • high heat resistance;

  • very good rain tolerance;

  • interesting fruity aroma;

  • unusual appearance of flowers;

  • early onset of flowering;

  • excellent wintering under the snow.

The disadvantages of Aykonik include too rapid awakening, leading in a cold climate to freezing of the shoots. And also in hot weather, the instability of the color of the petals appears, they turn white, losing their decorative effect.

Flowering features

Rose Aykonik is distinguished by long, until frost, flowering. The buds are formed abundantly. The variety is re-flowering.

Use in landscape design

Rose Aykonik is well suited for small groups in the garden. It is in this format that it looks most impressive. In single plantings, it looks good in the frame of a well-groomed lawn. In containers, exquisite climbing roses harmoniously fit into the design of entrance groups, balconies, terraces. And also the variety is suitable for decorating flower beds.

Growing regions

The variety is very cold-resistant. In Russia, it is planted in open ground in most regions. It is successfully cultivated in the Leningrad Region and the Moscow Region.

Landing

Plants of this variety thrive best in sun-drenched areas with light, preferably sandy or loamy, nutrient-rich soil. Inadmissibly close location of groundwater.

Growing and care

The main agrotechnical measures in the process of caring for climbing roses correspond to standard recommendations. The soil is loosened and weeded, fertilizers and moisture are applied, periodically allowing the top layer to dry out. Aikonik requires the obligatory installation of a support along which the shoots will trail. In a pot culture, a simple peg is used; it is better to install a trellis in the country.

Pruning

This climbing variety requires regular shaping. And also the plant is sanitized in spring or autumn.

Frost resistance and preparation for winter

Aikonik belongs to frost resistance zone 5 according to the USDA classification. When the ambient temperature drops to -30 degrees, the plants must be placed in a shelter for the winter.

Diseases and pests

This rose variety has a high degree of immune defense. Plants are extremely rarely affected by black spot and powdery mildew, as well as other fungal diseases of the culture.

Review overview

The opinion of Russian gardeners about the Aykonik rose can hardly be called unambiguous. The cultivar is praised for its excellent vitality, good density and growth rate. Summer residents note that in the early years the rose is more like a ground cover, and in pots and containers it gives strong straight stems. The bush reveals its true beauty gradually. The unusual color of the petals is its main advantage, but connoisseurs find many shades in the aroma, from peach to lime.

Negative reviews quite often include mentions that the climbing ability of the plant is not pronounced enough. And also summer residents are unhappy with the fact that with an early awakening in the northern latitudes, the variety often dies during recurrent frosts. Flowers, too, are not to everyone's liking, since the shape of the bud and the opened corolla is more characteristic of the wild rose. In general, it is indicated that the variety is less decorative than in the photo in the catalogs, which is disappointing to gardeners.
