Flannel fabric is the perfect choice for sewing warm bedding and nappies. Such textiles are delicate and soft to the touch. Perfectly warm in frosty winter evenings and in the chilly off-season.

Characteristics and types

Flannel (bike or bumazey) is a dense fabric with a soft and delicate pile, evenly distributed over the material on one or both sides. Thick threads of fabric are intertwined according to the principle of a cloth.

The homeland of flannel is England. Here she appeared already in the 18th century. It was brought to Russian territory a century later. The fabric was very expensive, so only rich and noble people could afford it. The very first flannel was painted only in light colors, which made the material luxurious and chic for that time.

It can be based on woolen, semi-woolen or cotton threads. The average density is 175 g / m², but there are other variations. Wool fibers are rarely used to make fabrics. The most common is cotton flannel fabric with a small amount of synthetic threads. This combination makes the flannel material:

  • very durable;
  • soft;
  • resistant to wear and tear;
  • well conductive and heat-retaining.

The width is from 80 to 220 cm. Despite the fact that the fabric is very dense, it perfectly allows air to pass through.

According to the type of coloring of the flannel material, several types are distinguished.

  1. Printed. A pattern is stuffed onto the fabric. Such flannel is used to sew baby diapers and clothes. Drawing on one side is necessary so that the child's skin does not interact with the paint. This minimizes the occurrence of allergies.
  2. Plain dyed. The fabric is dyed one color on both sides.
  3. Bleached. At the initial stage, the fabric is obtained in different colors. For a uniform white color, it is bleached. Pure flannel material without dyeing and patterns is used for sewing bed and baby linen.

There are white-ground and ground flannel, which are the result of a mixture of several types of basic colors. They differ in that in the first case, a pattern is applied to the bleached fabric. In the second - on plain dyed.

The density of the fabric is determined by the weight of the material. Light, medium and heavy density flannel are distinguished.

The main advantages of flannel bedding are as follows:

  • flannel linen becomes softer with each wash;
  • very simple principles of care that do not require specific funds and a lot of time;
  • long service life;
  • warms quickly and for a long time, it itself is warm to the touch.

Flannel bedding, in which the patterns are continuous and visible on both sides of the material, will retain their print and color for a long time. This is due to the method by which the fabric was woven. In this case, the pattern is not applied to the finished textile, but is woven from an already dyed thread.

When choosing flannel bedding, there are some guidelines to follow.

  • you need to buy bedding from trusted sellers offering high-quality textiles;
  • you should carefully study the information on the label;
  • preference should be given to flannel, which is woven from dyed threads, since such material will retain its color qualities longer than printed fabric.

Flannel for newborns

During the cold seasonal periods, parents prefer to buy flannel rompers, undershirts, caps, and diapers for their child. Flannel diapers do not lose their relevance in the warm season.

Most often you can find diapers measuring 100x120 cm. Sometimes you can find square or small diapers. For a more budget-friendly option, you can sew flannel diapers yourself.

Flannel diaper fabric can be used in several qualities.

  1. Baby sheets. The use of flannel diapers for a newborn's crib solves the issue of frequent linen changes, since these sheets are soft and easy to clean.
  2. Towels. Most towels, even baby towels, are rough on baby's sensitive skin. The flannel diaper can get wet the delicate skin of the baby, because the flannel diaper absorbs water well and does not injure the baby's skin.
  3. Table mats, where the child is given massage, gymnastics, morning procedures or where a doctor examines.
  4. Light blanket. On warm summer evenings, the baby can be covered with a flannel diaper. Under such a blanket, he will not be hot or cold.

Colorful flannel nappies in a cage or with large bright patterns can be used as a developmental rug for babies. At about the age of four months, babies love to look at interesting patterns and pictures.

When the child grows up, the old flannel can be sent for household needs. Flannel cloths will be an excellent cleaning aid.

Flannel care

Flannel textiles are very easy to clean. It can be machine washed and hand washed. Manufacturers do not recommend washing flannel at high temperatures, as the material then shrinks. Better to wash in warm water.

Before the first use, flannel textiles must be soaked in cold water and then washed.

Use bleach and stain removers with great care. They can damage the structure of the fabric and ruin the pattern. Do not rub the dirty area too much, otherwise small pellets may appear.

The care of flannel diapers is slightly different. They are allowed to be washed at high temperatures and even boiled. And the use of bleaches and stain removers is strictly prohibited.

After the flannel is very dry, iron it on both sides using a steamer.

Reviews

Users describe flannel bedding as extraordinarily soft, warm and cozy. It is noted that the warmth of flannel underwear is incomparable with synthetic warmth. But some owners of flannel linen complain that after washing, such bedding is very wrinkled. And after drying it is very difficult to iron it. And also a minus is that when folded, flannel linen takes up more space than a simple bedding made of cotton or calico.

Turkmen bed linen requires special attention. It is recommended as high quality underwear at an affordable price, with a huge range of colors and models.

Flannel nappies collect only positive reviews. People love the large selection of modern diapers and their size range. You can buy a diaper for every taste: in a cage, a flower, a single color, and so on. But people who are familiar with Soviet-style flannel diapers write that the current flannel fabric is not the same.
