Any item has a shelf life, especially bed linen. The time will surely come when updates are needed. There is always a choice in stores, but it is much more pleasant to create everything with your own hands, not to mention the low price and high quality.

Perhaps everyone will agree that bed linen is very intimate for us, has a special energy, because we spend a lot of time with this material. That is why, having made a kit with your own hands, you want to enjoy every moment spent in bed, and dreams again enchant you, as in childhood.

Choosing a fabric

There are many types of fabrics, but not all are suitable for bedding. When we come to the store, our eyes run up: price, color, quality, density, softness, resistance to staining and a whole lot of properties that are difficult to understand when choosing something. To make it easier to go shopping, let's highlight the main types of fabrics most often used in work:

  • silk;
  • linen;
  • cotton.

Silk items look expensive and cost the same, require careful maintenance, but are incredibly attractive and sophisticated. The sheets are always pleasantly cool, and the body is immersed in softness and glides slightly from any touch. Japanese silk is considered the most elite, but artificial fabric is often found on supermarket shelves. External similarities are expressed in shine, the cost is much lower, and it is much easier to care for. But otherwise it is far from the original.

Flax is quite dense, has bacteriological properties, retains heat in cold weather and does not allow the temperature to rise in summer. It has been proven that bright colors last for a long time, and over time, the rigid structure softens. After washing, it is important not to let linen clothes dry for a long time, it is advisable to remove them slightly damp, fold them neatly or iron them to avoid excessive wrinkling.

Our choice will fall on cotton fabrics. Of these, bed linen is most often made, due to their cheapness and durability, they are so common. Several varieties of cotton can be suggested as a recommendation.

  • Satin is the most durable, capable of surviving up to 400 washes. May resemble silk due to its glossy and subtly shiny surface.
  • Percale is suitable for pillowcases. The high density will not allow feathers or fluff to crawl out.
  • Calico made of rather dense cheap threads, because of this, the sensation of touch leaves much to be desired.
  • The chintz is soft in comparison to the rest. The downside is that it does not hold its shape well.

We calculate the amount of textiles

For clarity, we will analyze the sizes that are usually used to create a one-and-a-half duvet cover for a newborn and an envelope.

For the first, the length is 4 m 40 cm with a canvas span of 150 cm.

To sew an envelope for babies, you can take 100x100 or 90x90 cm of textiles.

The standardized space in a crib is 120x60 cm. In stores, kits are sold in completely different sizes, which suggests the conclusion that it is much more convenient to make a kit yourself in order to get rid of waste of money and subsequent disappointment.

The above data is approximate. If you want more accurate values, take the bedspread for which you are sewing and measure it back and forth. You can use a ruler or tape measure.

It is important to separate the area where the seams will appear, for this leave about 4-5 cm on the sides. If you decide to add a fastening element, then the distance will increase to 7 cm.

Step-by-step instructions for cutting and sewing

If you decide to set yourself a goal to sew a duvet cover with your own hands, you should not attend lessons, master classes, you can do everything at home, observing the accuracy of the seams, taking into account the correct calculated data.

With a cutout in the middle

Perhaps, since childhood, everyone is familiar with the diamond in the middle of the blanket. Making such a wonderful memory will not be difficult if you follow the instructions step by step.

First, determine the position of the cutout: we outline the space in the core of the canvas and outline the rhombus. Inside, we leave seam allowances of about 4.5 cm, according to this line we cut off the central figure. Try to cut the corners without touching the bottom line. Maintain a distance of 0.2 cm and a 45 degree cut angle.

We'll need new fabric. We cut out two squares from it, which should be twice the width of the allowance, and also take into account 1 cm for the future location of the seam. We get four triangles with equal hips by cutting the squares in half. Fold each square from the front to the corners of the neckline. Apply carefully with a slant cut and the upper area. We attach everything with different seams: in the angular section 0.3 cm, the rest - 0.5 cm.

Straighten the corners, outline the left allowance from the inside out. Sew 0.1 cm along both edges.

The work is over, little remains to be done: wash, iron and you can enjoy the final result.

With a hole on the bottom or on the side

This type is considered one of the easiest to manufacture. Most often, a large piece of material is taken, the excess is cut off only from one edge. If you cut off the unnecessary from the center, then the work will be added by several hours. The cut along the edge further simplifies processing.

We lay out the textiles on a flat surface, referring to the scale of the bedspread, mark a rectangle, draw a second one next to it. Leave a 4 cm allowance at each edge. After checking with a ruler, you need to cut out the parts and process. It is required to iron a double hem in half a centimeter on all sides, and then stitch it on a typewriter. If the structure is quite dense, you can take a centimeter or more.

Compare the cooked halves. They must be identical. Before stitching the parts folded with the front sides, it is necessary to outline a passage from the side through which the blanket should be inserted.

Don't forget to secure the stitching. This is done at the beginning and at the end so that the threads are held tight and do not break. You can safely turn it inside out, you're done!

Button-down

This fastening is very convenient, because when using the blanket will not constantly fall out.

First, prepare a duvet cover with a hole in the bottom. Follow the instructions above, only the underside, where the loops will be, do not need to be processed.

At the bottom, we outline a line running along the bottom edge at a distance of 6 cm. From it we draw perpendicular segments indicating the boundaries of future buttons, equal to 1/3 of the length of the cover. We fold the product to the floor in width, set the middle, and from it along we begin to mark every 30 cm.

Sew to the marked perpendicular lines, sweep the indicated vertical segments with multi-colored threads. We leave space from them one centimeter at a time. Below is a line made by a typewriter. We retreat 2 cm from it and draw a parallel. It is important to remove unnecessary fabric, where there is a machine stitch, not forgetting to set aside the space allocated for the seams, as a rule, 2 cm.

Now the notch is made in the corners, use a sharp blade or scissors. The indents on the linen are trimmed to 0.7 cm. The excess threads, which previously marked the fastener, are removed, and the free edge, set aside for the buttons, is folded back by 2 cm, then again by the same amount.

We do the same with the second half.Unstitched areas remain on both sides. For them, we use a hem seam. After that, we combine the fastener and the free places that were previously allowed in with a double stitch. Do not forget to process the remaining sections with a zigzag.

Final straight! We have two prepared sides, on one of which we outline the loops, and on the other we place the buttons.

Tip: it is advisable to turn the product inside out during washing.

How to sew a zipper?

Many people prefer a zippered snake. You don't need to thread every button through the hole, just pull on the dog! In addition, buttons can cause discomfort during sleep, and if they are not properly secured, they pose a threat to young children.

When buying a zipper, it is better to give preference to a soft, plastic, lightweight substance, for example, plastic. An iron runner will last much longer than a cheaper material.

The product needs to be prepared: be sure to process the ends, fold the fabric layers to each other with the front side. Using a pencil or a bar of soap, mark out the future location of the movement.

Do not forget to take into account the distance for the allowance - 4 cm. This figure is suitable for a standard zipper, but if it is more or less, you must take this fact into account by stepping back to another value.

Baste the fabrics following the indicated line. And iron the released 4 cm, having previously folded in half in length. It turns out that the width of the fold is 2 cm. Please note that the seamed top will coincide with the swept seam.

Take the pins and use them to attach the fastening mechanism to the two-centimeter bend, but do not touch what the bend is on! Then sweep the zipper and do the same with the other half.

Sew neatly from the right side, keeping an inch from the fold. Attach the line with vertical stitches at the beginning and end.
