The living room is a place in the apartment, which is intended for the comfort of the owners of the house and a good time with the guests. The living room furnishings reflect the taste and quality of life of the household. This is why choosing comfortable, soft and stylish living room chairs is so important. Often, an armchair is included in a furniture set with a sofa, but in modern styles, armchairs are increasingly used, which are an independent part of the interior, complement it and carry a separate functional load.

Materials (edit)

The chair can be made from natural or artificial materials. This largely depends on the financial capabilities and functions that this piece of furniture will perform in the room.

Frame

If we are talking about a frame, then it is most often made of wood or metal. These are the most durable options. For modern models (for example, Art Nouveau style), frames made of metal and durable plastic are characteristic. The frame material accounts for more than half of the product's cost, which determines the price you pay for a piece of furniture.

To save money, manufacturers often replace natural materials with artificial ones, which are easier to care for. Often, instead of wood in inexpensive models, chipboard or MDF is used (if the frame is hidden).

It is recommended to buy chairs with upholstery only on the back and seat. Legs, armrests and sidewalls can be without upholstery.

Upholstery

The upholstery can be made of natural or artificial leather. The leather is easy to clean, it is easy to care for, more durable than artificial, but it costs an order of magnitude higher. Leather upholstery is typical for modern, loft, ethno and high-tech furniture. Fabric upholstery made of jacquard, velor, upholstery flock or microfiber is considered to be quite durable and economical compared to leather. Some fabrics (eg flock) have special protection against pet scratches. When buying, you need to pay attention to the quality of the processing of the seams, the presence of defects in the form of folds and tears. Some manufacturers often leave armrests without upholstery, this allows you to extend the life of the product, reduce the number of cleanings and costly repairs, and replace the old upholstery with a new one.

Varieties

Before looking for a suitable chair, you need to think about how it will be used. In the living room, it can be designed for comfortable reading, watching TV, working, resting, relaxing and receiving guests. Often, this piece of furniture is used as an additional bed or decorative element.

Depending on your requests and needs, you can choose one of these varieties:

  • If the chair is designed for computer work or reading, you can opt for a modern office chair. It has a comfortable back and armrests. It is easy to adjust in height.
  • If it is intended for comfortable reading or watching TV, a classic soft chair with a fixed flat back will do. It has four low legs and a medium-high back.
  • If you need an extra bed, a folding chair (chair bed) would be an ideal option. By design, it can be folded out, have a roll-out transformation, be with or without armrests. Often, such products are equipped with roomy linen drawers, which allows you to store bed linen in them.
  • If the apartment is small, you need to choose something very compact, you can give preference to a small corner armchair. This is a great option for people who value comfort and practicality.
  • Creative young people, lovers of informal gatherings, often choose unusual hanging chairs (made of fabric, wicker, wooden).

In them you can relax and unwind, read in a comfortable position or watch the fire in the fireplace. They take up a lot of space, they are chosen for a spacious hall or the adjoining territory of a country house.
  • Those who appreciate innovation and bold solutions in interior furnishing can pay attention to the fashionable armchairs on one leg. They feature a stable leg of varying lengths and a streamlined seating position. The most daring design decisions in terms of construction and color are possible here.

  • The beanbag chair is often chosen for youth parties in the living room. This type of chair is a large, soft cushion with a cover and filler. This model is safe: you cannot fall from such a chair, it will not cause injury, it can take any place in the room (it can be placed in the corner, or in the center of the living room if guests have come).
  • Lifting chairs are high-tech beautiful models that change position in relation to the floor at the touch of a button. They are intended for older users and people with disabilities. This model can have a recliner.
  • Another option for a high-tech chair is special massage models designed for relaxation at home. Using special buttons, you can select one or another mode, for example, vibration or tapping, massage of the neck, legs, back. You can also adjust the intensity of the massage.
  • In the spacious living room of a country house, in rustic interiors, you can often see cozy wicker chairs. Popular options include rattan, bamboo, walnut, and cane. Many are attracted by furniture made from natural materials. In this case, this is the main feature. A beautiful, original wicker chair is easier to clean than a fabric one.

The modern market offers a wide range of models, which can have neutral or bright colors, various shapes and designs that hint at belonging to a particular style idea.

Depending on the size of the room, you can choose small (mini), large, standard sizes, which will allow the chairs to look harmonious in the guest area of the living room without overloading the space.

They can coincide with the sofa in texture, shape, smoothness or severity of lines, decoration. Some varieties can be decorated with cushions, soft blankets or bright capes, while others do not need additional decoration. Here are some common styles.

Classic style

The armchair in the classic style is distinguished by its elegance and decor with gilding. It has low legs, an average backrest and armrests. It can be decorated with small pillows to match the upholstery. Classic armchairs are suitable for those who need to decorate the living room in the spirit of palace solemnity.

The name speaks for itself. Such an armchair bears the imprint of English elegance and aristocracy in the interior. The peculiarity of the English-style armchairs is a high back, small shortened armrests. The upholstery can be fabric or leather. The color of the upholstery fabric is a strip or brown check. It is pleasant to sit in such an armchair by the fireplace in the evening. You can decorate it with a single-color contrasting elongated pillow.

Modern

Armchairs in the Art Nouveau style are laconic and simple in design, ergonomic and original in design. The frame can be metal, wood, plastic, fabric, leather or fur are used in the design. The emphasis is on simplicity and minimal decor, while the manufacturability and ergonomics of the models, their unusual shapes and designs, stand out.

Ethno style

This style is characterized by wicker chairs, wood options, stools and soft chairs upholstered in natural fabrics. Shades of chairs in ethnic style are varied and depend on the specific direction chosen. They can be natural woody, light, white.

Color solution

The color scheme of the chairs is an important factor in any model. With the help of color, the desired mood, design idea is conveyed. The shade is especially important if the chair is bought in a ready-made interior.

It should harmoniously fit into it in style and color, it may be the same color as the rest of the furniture in the room (then it will not be difficult to choose the upholstery), or become a bright accent, standing out against the background of other pieces of furniture.

If the interior is designed in a classic style, all furniture has a calm, neutral upholstery. You can dilute the interior with brighter pillows. It is better to choose chairs to match the furniture. If your interior style is characterized by a bright contrasting palette, you can choose a model of the corresponding bright colors. But do not forget that a bright palette visually reduces the space; it is better to avoid this in small living rooms. If the upholstery fabric has a complex texture, it is important not to overdo it with bright colors.
